Toronto Maple Leafs clean house

and this is why i now cheer for the habs. there is simply nothing to cheer for anymore in leaf's nation and of all the awful seasons over the past 30 or so years i have been a leaf's fan this might be the worst. i have never seen an entire team tank like the leaf's did and have so many issues throughout the organization. if by some miracle the leaf's end up picking macdavid in this years draft i might go back to rooting for them but i don't see that happening and i am simply done and want to cheer for a winner!!!

I am very curious to hear what Leafs fans think they are going to get for the following:

1. Dion Phaneuf
2. Joffry Lupul
3. Phil Kessel

Obviously no one in untradable as Luongo just showed us, but these guys are damn close. If you move them, you're going to have to retain salary and get about $0.50 on the dollar in return.

as a former leaf's fan you can trade away the entire team but without the proper team chemistry the leaf's will still go nowhere.

I don't think they'd have too much concern retaining salary on those guys, depending on for how long. Shanahan has said you have to do this rebuilding thing right, and no short cuts. To me, that means a few years of icing a team with hard workers and kids that need to learn and blossom into the game. I don't think it would hurt them too much to have 10% of their cap tied up in guys playing for other teams, at least for two, maybe three more seasons.

That said, it's a fair question on what they could expect to get in return... even trading for a similar cost, shorter term contract might be palatable. Then we can rag on the new guy for slacking. Kessel and Phaneuf bashing is boring because it's so easy. :)

Are there any uninsured $8 million contracts out there of players that are injured...? Didn't think so... had to ask though. :D

The NHL has a maximum on the number of contracts you can retain salary. I think it is 3. Do the Leafs have any for next year? If they do, that can do some serious damage to any trade involving one of those three players.

Everyone said Clarksons contract wasn't trade-able and he was traded so yeah, these three can definitely be traded.

Phaneuf - I'll take a bad contract back a b level prospect and a depth defensman. If I have to retain salary I want minimum a second round pick as part of the deal. A deal along these lines was close with Detroit so it's doable.

Lupul - I'll take a mid-round pick to get his contract off my books. He can be a good player but is injured too often. Another team can take a chance on him staying healthy and if he can get back to his old production level his salary is fair.

Kessel - This year aside he is a proven 30-40 goal scorer who under the right circumstances can be a very important player on a contending team. The Leafs will not be a contender for a long time and Kessel will be well past his prime once that happens. I think we can get a first round pick, an a level prospect, and a top 6 forward for him.

Perhaps whoever wins the draft lottery might be tempted to move said pick if the kessel carrot is dangled in front of them lol.
