Trading Values - Link

I read the article and he is correct in one sense and wrong in another. Correct that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That saying goes for cards, automobiles and many other items. However, when were going to trade, we do need a means of figuring the value. I don't like Beckett anymore than the next collector. As a matter of fact, I would really like to know were they come up with some of their values. I don't know anyone who pays "book value" for anything. However we really don't have another means of valuing the cards at this time. If the values are based on dealer quotes, you know they are probably padding the books. With the advent of ebay and other auction houses, there are not many true collectors left. Everbody now is a dealer.

You do have a means - what the card is worth to you. Did you read the article? This was the major point.

I strongly agree with this article. In fact, if I'm working out a trade in person at a show and someone opens a Beckett magazine to look up a value I will usually end all dealings right there on the spot. I have one or two friends in the hobby as well whose company I enjoy but I will not even begin to talk trade with them simply for the reason that they are always looking for the better card.

In recent dealings with people here on HI I would also dare to say that there are more than a number of other people in our local community who should take this article to heart.

Depends on the cards, and depends on why I want them, generally. When trading for something like rookies to finish a set, then I like to try to keep things even as far as BV goes, because they have value for me when I complete the set. BV works well in this instance, because it is usually pretty simple to make these kinds of trades. In fact, I'd probably make similar trades without the BV, but it just gives me something to check on.

For my player collections, and other shiny things that catch my eye, I go based on the way I value the cards, which is quite different from BV.

This distinction might only make sense in my head, but that's usually the way I think when I am looking to make trades.

When I'm purchasing cards, I do have a value of what I'm willing to pay for it. The way I look at everthing, you have something to sell. I'll offer the price, and the dealer can either take it or leave it. However, I know the dealers and traders, use beckett as a guide as to the price they will accept. I figure if the dealer or traders turns me down, I guess I was not suppose to have the card anyway.

I liked the article and I think for the most part, in my experiencies anyway, most people are starting to go by Ebay value EV ;) appose to Bec..kett BV, we all like reading the latest Beck..ett to put a $$ value on the latest card but I for one, check Ebay first ;) It is in my opinion the only true way to put a $ value on what you have. Other than that it's only worth what you want to sell it for or what you want to buy it for.

When trading however, we do need a standard....A Lemieux to some aint worth much as they collect Leetch (Sorry Mikey) and for me to trade a Leetch for a Lemieux of the same card straight up would be great for me but unfair to Mikey :p Even though we would both be happy to get the card we wanted! So I still feel we need some kind of standard for trading but unfortunaltley all we have at the moment is BV cause that's what we are use to. EV will take over soon

My 2 cents

Thanks for posting the article.

If its a card I need to finish a set, I will usually trade in your favor. If its a card I have that someone else needs, I will try and get something for one of my sets or another card for trade bait.

I put sets only together, so its harder for me to trade, since I don't have many to trade for, so the traders I have, I gladly get rid of em, and if someone needs em for there set, I will work with them to get them the card.

I don't even buy Becketts so I have no idea what value some of the cards have..of course if its a great card..it goes to Ebay to help fund sets..

I haven't bought a Beckett in years. I enjoy the Canadian Sports Collector much more and it has more of a pulse on things. And trading should have everything to do with how much you want what you need... and how much you don't really need what you have. In a trade, saying that something has a Beckett value of $30 is ridiculous most times as I can get it for $6 on eBay. It's less of a headache to just buy the darn thing from the 'bay. Too many people think the other guy is trying to screw them over... they don't wanna be the guys who 'lose' a trade.

BV is one of the reasons I choose to have a trade box fulla stuff too scarce for pricing. Too many people view it as a catalogue rather than a guide.

I'm slightly more moderate than Ferris in this regard. For lower-level trade, I don't have a problem with using BV as a guide to trade values. With a majority of people, there's not much argument about it. I find most reasonable people will tend to agree if you make a statement like "I believe these are a little under/over priced, so for that reason I use this value instead". A few don't follow along, but I still manage to work things out with those people....usually by using the technicalities of BV against them if they choose to be difficult: "It's 2 color, so that's a 2x multiplier..." and so on...

Meh. It's a rare person who drives me spare any longer.
