Compiling a master listing of Series I is a daunting undertaking because we just don’t know what’s out there with any precision. Combine some suspect quality control and it’s difficult to tell what Pro Set truly corrected and what are variations due to printing errors. I recently bought a case (separate Show & Tell thread) that I'm still working through, and I may found an honest to goodness variant that can't be explained by print error.
Now sifting through this stuff is kind of bewildering. You've got 25-30 copies per card in a case and you don't know what you're looking for. I do like how when Pro Set corrected an obvious error, they'd sometimes make other adjustments to the card. For example, when they updated Jari Kurri's All-Star card with a transaction stripe, they also updated his bio. Even odder, they changed the color of the trademark under the All-Star logo on the front of the card. So I decided to take a 2nd look at some of the corrected cards.
Our case study: #61 Duane Sutter
Pro Set thought it important to tell us that Duane retired in June. They didn’t tell us this until October or so, so there are two versions of this card – one with a stripe and one without. He is the only retired player with such a designation. The bio also updates his status, and here's where things get a little interesting.
Top card is the 'error' without stripe. Next two are of the corrected card. But there's a very slight difference between those two cards. Let's take a closer look.
See it? There's an extra space in "off-season" in the 2nd card.
Ok, admittedly, very anti-climactic, and yet, Pro Set corrected equally banal issues while overlooking obvious inaccuracies such as listing John Vanbiesbrouck as a center. Did they really correct Sutter and then take a 2nd look? "Oh, we put an extra space. Better make another correction." I can't say with total certainty, but this is the only Series 1 card that I'm aware of where the typeset within the bio varies. We've seen quotation marks fall away, but the space was still there for them.
So is this an undiscovered variation? Even if it is, will anyone care about it? Impossible to say. But it's out there, and now you know.
