TSN reports 2 NHL Proposals

That number is only going to get lower as time goes by. I think that the PA might accept that if the NHL would give ground in other areas like arbitration and qualifying offers.

*ahem* the nhl is digging themselfs into a bigger hole. Once they bring in scabs the PA wins. PA takes the nhl to court, wins and becomes stronger than ever (sounds like a baseball lockout to me...)

Which scabs are you referring to, the ones playing in Europe?

Theyre already done talking for the day, its the same story, no side will budge. I think Bettman or Goodenow have to be fired for this to be resolved.

Replacement players could work one of two ways:

What the NHL hopes - Slightly (not by much though) lower ticket prices and near sellouts at the arena's, showing that fans cheer for the team whomever is wearing the Jersey. Players slowly filter back into the NHL, the union capitulates or worse, and Goodenow and Saskin get ridden out of town.

What the PA hopes - Replacement players bomb out, resulting in 50% or lower capacity, forcing the NHL back to the table to sweeten the deal. The replacements are relegated to the UHL and Europe, never to see their faces on an Upper Deck card. Bettman gives up trying to open the puck and runs back to the NBA.

The trick here is the NHL fired back with a much lower number hoping to entice the PA to take linkage. I don't see the PA taking linkage unless there is a floor (32.5 million or so) cause there is a possibility (even though it may be slight) that league revenues go up. im wondering how (or if) Bettman got MLSE or the Illitch's to go along with 37.5.

I said it earlier - 42.5 really looked good, then the PA got greedy.

Kinda OT, but worth mentioning in light of an earlier response suggesting the NHLPA will sue and win once "scabs" hit the ice... whether replacement players "work" or not, there's no cause for legal action on the part of the NHLPA. Once the CBA expires and "x" amount of time passes, the owners are free to do what they want with their league. The NHLPA has no grounds for an unfair labor practice charge, no contractual environment within which they can file a grievance, and no grounds for a lawsuit. They went into this with open eyes, and told anyone who'd listen that what the owners wanted was to NOT reach agreement so that they COULD re-start the league under their own terms... and guess what? That's exactly what's going to happen if they don't sign an agreement. And THAT'S the leverage the owners now have - the NHLPA has no recourse. A union without a company to employ its members is worthless; that's the hard lesson the players and their reps will learn, much like the pilots at some formerly-solvent airlines.

Precisely.

The NHLPA is slowly coming to the realization that they've pulled a MAJOR George Costanza here. They've deluded themselves in thinking the league revenues strong, furthered that illusion with their constant misguided dogma at negotiations, and finally calling the NHL's ultimatum to realize that Bettman wasn't bluffing.

I repeat what I've said from the beginning: The players refuse to understand or accept that the deal the NHL proposed means the same amount of money will end up in players' pockets. They simply can't make that kind of money all on the same team. There will be no more Detroit or Colorado style powerhouses unless they can convince their players that keeping the team together is more important than personal gain. There'll be no more Rangers to pick up retarded contracts. There are going to be limits and penalties for idiotic spending.

The way it should be/should have been all along. Don't get me wrong, I love my Flyers, but their salaries are far, far too high. To see John Leclair raking in $9 mil' for 25-30 goals in a good year nowadays, that really hurts. Seeing Amonte grabbing around $6 mil' a year for constantly pinging "Unchained Melody" on the goalposts hurts too. In my opinion, player agents and sports agencies handling player contracts has absolutely destroyed the financial side of the game. I believe (or at least I want to believe) that players are not greedy by nature, but capitalist agents (ie Don Meehan et al) have twisted the minds of the players (with help from Goodenow and his crew) into thinking they need more money than other players at their level. I think all the players need to step back and realize that they play a game... a kids game, for a living and get paid more in one season than most of us will see in a lifetime to do it.
The big 4 of Butt-man, Daly, Good-for-nothing-now and Saskin all have to be axed for any headway to be made in these negotiations. That's all I have to say about that.

chips... its called unfair bargening or somthing like that, the league isn't bringng in the no-name players to get a league, they're trying to break the union...its happend in baseball and another sport (i think its basketball? could be football...) My cardshop owner and I have talked it over alot, he knows more about it than I do... as to the scabs I was talking about- no-name players coming in..

I had to copy it all cause Steve worked George costanza into the post before it reached page 2 :D

42.5 seems like a birthday present compared to 37.5. Im surprised Bettman didn't come out swinging with "35 - take it or leave it!"

The PA has few options, just depends on how bad they want to lose:

Reject it outright and take the replacement player gamble.

Accept 37.5 and walk Goodenow off the shortest pier they can find

Attempt to negotiate either off 37.5 (they had their chance though) or attempt to negotiate a floor with linkage

Counter-propose with 42.5 or 40 and have Bettman laugh at it like The episode of Trailer Park Boys with Conky.

Like I said earlier - The PA had their chance at 42.5 and wanted 49 instead. They blew it. Goodenow has come off looking like the biggest schmuck in sports out of all of this, and id expect by October he either resigns or gets booted from the PA and spends the next 10 years washing Guerin's Tuesday Mercedes.

It's only an unfair labor practice, or unfair bargaining, if you're obligated to bargain with a particular union in the first place. And that's my point - come the expiration date of its obligation to do so after the CBA lapsed, there IS no further legal obligation to talk to, negotiate with or in any way bargain with the NHLPA. That all goes out the window. The union, in effect, broke itself by letting the negotating period go by without reaching agreement. I'm NOT defending management, which has been just as hard headed as the NHLPA; but as a matter of labor relations law, the NHLPA will be legless in trying to sue over the use of replacement players because there's no contract making their use illegal or a violation of labor laws. They can gripe and moan over the decision (and I'm sure they will, much to the glee of the players they bumped in Europe), but they have no recourse through the courts or the National Labor Relations Board, because there's no jurisdiction for either body to take the case - they have no authority.

The players can gamble and let the NHL put in replacement players. But if they lose, they are going to lose big.

Even if replacement players fail, the economics won't be there to support half of what the players are looking for. Both sides still lose if that happens.

All this circus of a league seems to be missing is the cotton candy and ring toss.
Can't these nimrods get something settled soon?

There ya go, again? Attempting to be the voice of reason!

I'll have to agree with the circus analogy! :D

Memo:

NHL/NHLPA

To whom it may concern:

It's now time to put your egos (re:NHLPA) aside and remember that above all! You get compensated very well to play a GAME! Yes a GAME! This in it's infancy has been about who gets the biggest part of the pie!

Well, hey! Get off of your high horses! Especially seeing as other sports, Poker ( ) have a better rating in the ole US of A than NHL. As well, what with the league being dependant on gate monies to pay for the salaries! HHMMMMMMMMM wouldn't that be the FANS? You may want to see if the Fans will pay to see the team play, readless of who's in the uniform. Or do they want to see the names?

Let's get the deal done at the USD $32.5 million range. With the caveat that if revenues increase, the CAP/Linkage will increase.

Just my ramblings for a Friday morning!

Brian
