DALLAS -- Goaltender Marty Turco's time with the Dallas Stars is over.

General manager Joe Nieuwendyk says the Stars will not re-sign Turco, who just completed his ninth season with the team.

Nieuwendyk says he feels it's time to go "in a different direction."

Kari Lehtonen, acquired from Atlanta in February, will start next season as the team's top goaltender.

The 34-year-old Turco just completed a US$22.8-million, four-year contract he signed in January 2006 that kept him from becoming a free agent at the end of that season.

Turco had a 22-20-11 record in 53 games this season. He had four shutouts, a .913 save percentage and a 2.72 goals-against average.

I don't think Lehtonen is the answer... will be weird to see Marty in a different uniform next season
 
The safe bet is Philly. They are in no position to acquire a young stud goalie, draft or trade, so Turco is their best option now.
 
He will be in Philly only if he takes a decent pay cut. We don't exactly have oodles of cap room.
 
I see Turco in Detroit backing up Howard . A better option that Philly as he played for the U of Michigan and this would be a homecomming of sorts...he cant win against Detroit so he might just as well play for them..lol
 
God...i would hate to see him in a Wing uniform...in a different conference would be nice (even though I hate philly). This way, we wouldn't see him all that often.

Good luck with where ever he goes, but a new start for both the team and Marty is what is needed.

Don't worry Lu, he won't go to the Wings. Wings don't have cap room to sign a goalie. Most of that money will shore up the forwards.
I would also say Philly or St. Louis. The Blues would be very interesting if you ask me. Nothing against Conklin (he's a great backup) and Mason isn't a starter though Marty is. A change of scenery might be what the doctor ordered for him.

I'll take himi in Tampa, and Smith can back him up again! But as someone else mentioned, he is going to need to take a pay cut.
 
Well if it's one thing about the Leafs I like about next year is the goal tending. You have an elite veteran goalie who has won a stanley cup and a young "monster" in the shadows. By saying that, a team like the Leafs wouldn't need Marty Turco, but teams like Phili, Montreal, and with an outside chance Washington. If Jaroslav Halak shines in the playoffs and takes Montreal far, he'll get a nice new contract while Carey Price gets the boot. Carey Price cards used too be the hottest thing and they would sell for me, now they sit in my display case! That shows something, and it doesn't help when the general manager (Bob Gainey) who believed in him is no longer running the team.

Phili's goaltending situation is a disaster, I don't see Brian Boucher taking the team past the first round, that guy has had so many chances too shine at the NHL level but instead of shining he shows rust. He just has that longest shut-out streak, but any elite NHL goalie or random NHL net-minder will surpass his record one day for sure.

I say Washington because Jose Theodore is going too be a UFA at 4.5 million. I don't see him coming back unless he leads the Capitals too a Stanley Cup. They have Semen Varlamov at under a million dollars for next year and they don't want too rush that kid like they last year in the playoffs although he was spectacular so Turco might be a good fit.

Going back on the Leafs it will be interesting too see how they proceed with Jonas Gutavsson. Even though he is a restricted free agent he might get a few offer sheets so Brian Burke should get him signed quickly.
 
I see Turco as a starter somewhere. So Washington, Chicago, or Philly seem about right to me.

Big fan of Turco and wouldn't mind seeing him in a Habs uniform, but I just don't see him signing on with a team where he'd be the backup. Am I alone here?
 
Turco will probably head off to philly in my opinion, montreal can't afford him they have to worry about signing pleks and one of thier goalies already which could demand good money there, and they need to fill a void of others that won't resignning first
 
Price will be on the shortest of short leashes in Montreal - that is if he's even there at the start of the eyar. With Gainey gone, I not crazy about Carey's chances of staying put.

Still don't see Montreal going out to get Turco, expecially if Marty still feels he can start 50 plus games per year.
