UD gets a taste of their own medicine...

I do not like exclusive deals in dealing either with players or entire leagues. Perhaps then Panini can do what UD did and release other people's products?
 
I wonder what the response will be from UD

First off I know that this is a hockey forum and this is a basketball topic, but I am posting it here because some people might not know what just happened in the Basketball card market. Both Topps and Upper Deck will loose their license in 2009-10. This will leave Panini as the lone producer of NBA related product. This is very similar to what happened in the hockey hobby in 2004-05.

i think its good i hate upper deck...i wish itg would take over as the lone producer for hockey cards.

Giving an exclusive trading card license to a company that knows nothing about producing trading cards.

Does that man I have a shot at getting the exclusive license to produce NHL trading cards when UD has finished kicking at the can?

Ah well. Basketball is the only sport that's gone in the crapper worse than hockey. It can't get much worse for them can it?
 
They can start by finding a picture of Alex Tanguay in a Canadiens uniform and getting some new ones of Matt D'Agostini.
 
I had no idea that Panini even made cards. I thought they just did stickers. Anyways, that's bad news for Basketball collectors. Competition is this hobby is extremely important, although I would expect that UD will find away to have Lebron in some product or another.
 
Yes now they will have more time for hockey cards but now they will make more different sets which in turn will just slow them down even more

At least to the North American mainstream - but they have been making cards in Europe for years. And it was likely this aspect, beyond the actual bottom line amount that probably put them over the top. But somehow I doubt that Topps or UD were entirely upset about this - it probably had the lowest return for any sport relative to their investment
 
One would think this might open up avenues to produce a better, more efficient hockey product. Then again, this is UD we're dealing with.

I have no idea if this has been posted anywhere else but on the UD site it says that they are no longer going to produce basketball, an exclusive contract was granted to someone else. Well now they see how this can effect business... they are going to finish out the year and that will be all they wrote for UD and basketball for a few years.

Now if the NHL could get their act together we would be all set.... give it back to ITG.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA serves them right..I love how they say "Our focus remains on delivering great products to the loyal collectors and consumers who have passionately supported Upper Deck basketball products". They just don't say when they will be delivering them...and whether or not you will get what you ordered!!!! I think it would be great if the NHL allowed someone else to enter the marketplace and give them a run for their money!
 
does anyone remember that a couple fo years ago, UD had to slash half of their production of Basketball products because they just werent selling?? This is more a revalation of the NBA and their "customers" and audience. Theres more money in overseas collectors.
