UD Redemption Replacement

After seeing UD lose their lawsuit with Konami and having more lawsuits lining up against them, I got nervous and decided to take replacements for the remaining redemptions I was waiting on.

The redemptions were for:

2008-09 SPGU SIGnificant Swatches Bob Bourne #/50
2008-09 The Cup Enshrinements Andy Bathgate #/50
2008-09 OPC Premier Dual Induction Inks Mark Messier / Al MacInnis #/50 (x2)
2008-09 OPC Premier Dual Induction Inks Gold Mark Messier / Al MacInnis #/10

I asked for the usual...any Hockey Hall of Famer autograph, but especially Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Ted Lindsay, Milt Schmidt, Elmer Lach, and a few other oldies. I open the package to find a 25 ct. Slide box with what appeared to be 5 cards in the middle of a bunch of decoy cards. As it turned out, 3 of the 5 cards in the middle were fillers, leaving me with 2 actual cards.

UD has stiffed me nearly every time I needed a replacement and when I saw the first card I thought that this wasn't going to be any different. I actually started to feel a little sick when I saw this:

At this point I could only imagine what the next card was that was waiting for me. I pushed the filler card slowly aside to uncover what my final replacement would be. The first thing I see is a sticker. At this point I'm ready to lose it, but after revealing the rest of the card my mood changed...

Unfortunately, neither of these two items are PC since I don't collect baseball and I like to avoid sticker autographs when possible. I'm pretty sure I finally got my money's worth with the Beliveau. If anyone can clue me in on how much that one sells for I'd appreciate it. Yeah, I'm looking at you Darren (dahabsfan)

That should hopefully wrap up the last replacement I will ever need to get from UD. It's nice to finally end on a positive note.

In my mind it is not nearly equal.

The Beliveau for the Messier/MacINNES is close to a wash.

But how can the Mike Schmidt #/75 = the others?????
In essence you got 1 Auto #/75 for 4 Auto's #/50.
You can't tell me that Schmidt is any more important to baseball than Messier to hockey???

I never said I was happy with what they sent me. I would have been happy with some PC cards. I just thought it was probably a fair replacement. I've seen a Hasek SP go for about $400-500, and if the Beliveau is anywhere close to that I at least won't lose money on the deal.
 
The Messier/MacInnis /10 would have been a nice PC card. I'd be happy with the Beliveau for that one card. I'd call UD CS again and see if you can return the baseball dual auto for another hockey card unless you're just going to sell it anyways.
 
aside from the name screwup, it would seem UD is trying harder in its replacement area these days. glad you're happy with what you got.
 
If you're looking at straight cash value, I'd say that Beliveau by itself would net you 2 to 3 times what the 4 cards that you had replaced would sell for together (look at the ending prices of Messier auto's...they're in the tank. And I've seen some of those FF SP's sell for over book), so, I'd say you made out very well.

that is what i was going to say, messier autos on their own or with someone like Al Mac don't go well these days, seems only Messier autos that do well have guys like mario, gretzky, howe etc on them to go for big money


still tough to plate 4 or 5 cards for two though....

overall, i think you did well though

Yeah, even then, Gretzky/Messier Dual AU's can be had for less than $200 now. Heck, a Mark Messier/Mario Lemieux Dual Auto/Jersey numbered /10 from this years SPx didn't even get opening bid of $149. I'd say UD has done a sufficent job of devaluing Moose's autograph :rolleyes:

That being said, if it they were PC, I could understand being disappointed. On the other hand, hey at least it's two less cards you have to worry about chasing, right?
 
I wouldn't be happy with that even if the Beliveau is BV$500.

I love Beliveau but IMO that card isn't a good trade off for the 2 Moose auto's. Maybe you can sell it or trade it and get something you want, I won't even comment on a baseball replacement for hockey card:(

If you don't think it's a fair trade off for 2 Moose autos, then I guess it's definitely not a fair trade off for the 3 (2 silver and 1 gold) I had redeemed ;)

From a PC perspective I am not happy receiving 1 sticker autograph for 7 hard signed HOFer autos. Unless I'm off about the value of the Beliveau, I should be able to sell it and make my money back to buy something that I do like. That's the only reason I am OK with the replacement.
 
One thing to consider on the listed BV of the Beliveau is that for that release the FF Autos were numbered as part of the set - instead of being parallels or subsets as they are now.

As with any SP's that are part of a collectible set - the value is always higher for the first items that appear vs. the latter items. When the set was first released and the SP's were not known - the cards went for lower prices initially. As more info was released/discovered by hobbyists - the values rose dramatically. Even with as few as 25 (according to UD - who really knows?) - the value you can obtain today may be far less than the listed BV of $500.

The question would be how many set builders are still trying to finish the set off??
I know many gave up when the prices at auction went through the roof. The only way to know is to set it at auction - or maybe a buyer you are aquainted with.


You are content with it at the moment - will you be just as content if it only garners $200??? In the end all that matters is if Upper Deck satisfied you - you have all of our opinions.
