UFC 117: Tomorrow

Sonnen came to fight! I lost all respect for Silva after his last debacle. The guy is a turd, I don't care how much talent you have, if you don't give it all every time you can screw off.

Sonnen got lazy, and stupid and Silva took advantage; that's why he's considered either one or two pound for pound. Sonnen dominated; but choked it away. . .literally. Can't wait for the immediate rematch which should happen in November.

According to compustrike Chael Sonnen landed 287 shots on Anderson Silva. In his previous eleven UFC fights Anderson Silva had been hit 211 times. That is stunning.

silva had sonnen's arm a couple of times throughout the fight and i knew an armbar or a triangle was coming but finally pulled out the triangle in the 5th. 2 minutes away man! i was pulling for sonnen but silva showed again, the power of jiu jitsu.

i have nothing but love and respect for sonnen, awesome showing.

Chael brought the pain, but his inexperience hurt him IMO. Still hugely pumped for Chael, still he doesn't deserve the immediate rematch, I think Vitor will be the man to dethrone Silva.

Big Country is a warrior. JDS should be scared at the possibility of facing Brock after this performance.

the belfort/silva fight should be sometime in the fall but with 118 in 3 weeks, not even thinking about that just yet.

i was talking to my friend afterwards, if he put a bit more striking and some bjj training into his repertoire, he could become a force. his strength, conditioning, and wrestling skills are superb...plus he has a pretty tough chin.

i don't think JDS will have his work cut out for him against either lesnar OR velasquez to be honest with you.

A few notes from random things tonight:

-Stefan Struve didn't win his fight so much as Christian "World of" Morecraft lost it by losing his cool after Struve touched gloves and kicked him right away. Morecraft proceeded to just throw irons to the fire and got hit with 3 straight bombs. Herb Dean probably should've stopped the fight 6 punches before he actually did, but hopefully that'll teach Morecraft not to lose his cool so quickly next time. Maybe while he's at it, he can arrange to have that trailer trash tattoo of his last name lasered off his stomach.

-Holy chin Roy Nelson.

-I honestly wasn't expecting Guida to win his fight...especially not by stoppage. Always a treat to watch him go nevertheless...and love the sneery chyron photo pre-fight.

-Matt Hughes was robbed of sole submission of the night glory. He pulls off one of the craziest awkward angle submissions we'll probably ever see, and then has to share submission of the night with Anderson Silva's "triangle." I just quotated it because I don't know if it was still really a triangle so much as just an armbar when Sonnen Fedor tapped.

-Props to Sonnen nevertheless. He was 2 minutes away from being able to tell the world "I told you so." Whether he retires or not, he proved Anderson Silva's mortal after all, fighting one of the smartest, if not the smartest match I've ever seen (submission aside.) I turned to the guys in the room and asked what the compustrike stats would be since Sonnen was landing piddly little hammer fists, but making it look like he was working and pushing forward the whole time so that the ref didn't pull them up even though there was very little damage being done. A couple days ago, I was wondering why someone who had two free hands while the opponent was in full guard wouldn't try to do something in the way of an open handed slap to try to disrupt equillibreum, and Sonnen definitely tried that tonight midway through the fight. Despite his cryptic hints toward possible retirement or break, I hope we see Sonnen back sooner than later.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty enjoyable card. I've never been much of a Matt Hughes fan, but he's starting to grow on me.

That Struve fight was hilarious. The cheap shot was funny, the look on Christians face was funny when he was getting knocked out (yes I am a bad person), Struves victory lap was hilarious. Definitely "FON" as in Funniest of the Night. Oh yeah and Struve's lip was funny.

Yeah great chin on Nelson, I still think JDS has no business fighting Cain/Lesnar with that performance. Because if Carwin cannot knock out Lesnar, JDS has NO chance in hell (excuse the WWE reference in relation to Brock).

Definitely not a Hughes fan either, but really good performances from him lately.

Sonnen is one of my new favorites. He did alot of little things I love to see, and haven't seen for a while. He was putting his hands over Silva's mouth trying to inhibit his breathing and help gas him. A subtle technique used alot in Pride. Also the shoulder checks on the floor was sweet, nice to see him try to, and almost, literally grind out a greasy win. Its been a long time since I seen such a greasy and gritty effort, and I love it. Again his inexperience in the championship rounds may have been the difference here, and only hardly. Hopefully Sonnen gets another shot at Silva (even if it is a non title shot), because the match up is great, and I think Sonnen has an excellent gameplan, and executes very well.

It wasn't inexperience that cost Sonnen, it was a lack of submission awareness. That has been what has plagued him his entire career. It is the same with Anderson's takedown defense; his takedown defense just wasn't very good. And his awareness was weak; why else would he have followed Chael down after knocking him down in the fourth only to get swept and put back on his back. We saw the flaws of both fighters on display. Anderson's almost cost him the title, Chael's actually did.

As for Clay Guida he escapes with another victory that if dos Anjos had been able to fight through the pain of the broken jaw for a few more minutes should have won because dos Anjos controlled Guida for the first two rounds.
