Orpik was released from the hospital last night and joined the team on the flight home. No update on if he will miss any games. Good news to hear though.
 
So, given the history of suspensions from Sheriff Shanny, if there is NOT a serious injury, I guess Thornton will get off with a small fine or couple of games, if that. :rolleyes:

After all, there's precident, remember. Slamming someone's head into the boards three times gets a $2,500 fine. Substitute 'ice' for 'boards' and that's what happened here.

This is going to be interesting how this plays out. We have a headshot, a knee to the head, and someone slewfooting then pounding someone's head into the ice. Interesting for sure, especially since these two teams are 'chosen ones' in Bettman's world.

I can hardly wait for Sheriff Shanny's explanation for this. Should be good for 86 hours of heated debate. That is, after we all shake our heads, mutter 'ya right' and chuckle at the stupidity of the explanations.
 
Thornton is a 4th line plug. He'll get at least 6 games. Superstar Neal on the other hand, will get a slap on the wrist for what I think is one of the most Bush League plays I've seen in a long, long time
 
The Neal knee reminds me of what happened to Crosby back in the
winter fest vs washington. I don't even recall who hit crosby, but
did that guy get any fines/susp?

Neal will likely claim he did not see Marchand on the ice, same as
the other guy.

As I felt back at the winterfest and last night, it should never
have happened and was very cheap at best.
 
I don't want to see any athlete get hurt. That said, the Neal knee to Marchand is a dose of karma in my books. Let's not pretend Marchand is a saint, he's a dirty player and got the other end of a dirty play for once. I believe 100% Neal did it on purpose although he will never admit it. Marchand needed a taste of his own medicine but Neal could have found a less dangerous way to go about it than a knee to the head. Neal and Thornton both deserve whatever Sherriff Shanny throws at them.

Believe me, there's probably no one who will disagree with you about Marchand. And, I suspect, there's probably a lot of people who thought 'YESSSSSSS' and fist-pumped when they saw who it was (though they will never admit it). Then again, I'm one of the very few who openly will admit it wouldn't upset me in the least if two specific NHL players had career-ending or career-threatening injuries.

Neal should be gone. Thornton should be gone. Orpik can arguably also get something for the head shot.

For a quick reference nobody is a repeat offender in this case all past indiscretions are past the 18 month window the NHL uses for the repeat offender punishment
 
Neal and Thornton are clean players (by hockey standards anyway), so their respective plays are looked at differently (as they should be) than if it were a Kaleta-esque player.


I am more interested in BO's injury anyway. My opinion will sway very heavily depending on whether he misses a game "precautionarily" or an entire month with a real injury. We either have a Mike Ribeiro or Steve Moore on our hands, and I don't think anyone quite knows where to go just yet.....
 
I hope Orpik is OK, that was ugly. Thornton will not get a slap on the wrist here, I expect he will get at least 5 games, maybe more. Neal will probably get nothing, which should surprise no one. :foottap:

You can tell what type of character each of the two offenders have. Thornton owned up to it, apologized multiple times, showed complete remorse, and expressed his concern for Orpik.

Neal on the other hand showed zero remorse, and even insinuated that he didn't do it on purpose. I have zero respect for Neal, the guy has dished out some extremely dirty hits and gotten away with pretty much all of it. His gutless hits against Philly (who I can't stand mind you) showed how cheap he is. The guy is a punk who seems to be shielded by his "star player in Pittsburgh" status. Two wrongs don't make a right, but seeing as how guys like Neal dish it out and then won't own up and drop the gloves, no one should be surprised if/when someone gives him a taste of his own medicine. I have more respect for Matt Cooke which makes me want to vomit, at least he manned up for his hit on Savard and dropped the gloves with Thornton.
 
Eriksson and Kelly out indefinitely, yet people worry this much about a player who broke a players neck before on a dirty hit. Not saying it was right but the guy is fine lets not treat this like it was murder.

If Neal is Karma for Marchand, the Orpik is Karma for Cole. Let's just throw any suspensions out and call it good, right? Did I really just read this post?!?!
 
My phone blew up when this happened. Just a mess on both ends... Neal, ugh. That was just nasty but Thornton, you never continue once a player is on the ice off his skates. Damage for both teams here.
