Leaf just tweeted that Upper Deck has renewed their exclusive license.

Was hoping the rumors about Topps maybe getting a license were true. Oh well.

Sad to hear this is continuing. I guess the NHLPA don;t really care about the hobby and collectors beyond the financial benefits. Competition would surely make UD more accountable to the collector, but not for now apparently, too bad.

That's good for the brand legacy of SPA FWAs and UD Young Guns, but it would have been nice to see new players in the game. At least, there's Leaf and President Choice for vintage mem/auto.

Player selection on autographed subsets from UD is far from what it was 15 years ago. A lot of fillers, bad players. I miss turn-of-the-millenium hard-signed sets loaded of HOFers.

In general, current Hockey cards are DEAD post 2005-06, McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon and a small handful of other players being the exception to having any value.

I wanted Topps, but I really just wanted another licensed option to push UD to do better than their steaming pile of regurgitated rubbish.

Oh well, have fun wasting your money folks, I'll continue to buy baseball, non-sport, and vintage/graded hockey until the exclusive ends.

Well I agree with your statement for the most part, is it really wasting my money if I am buying something I collect? I do not pump a bunch of money into the box breaks or case breaks I once did but if I am buying cards for my Roy PC that are post 2005-06 is that a waste of my money?

Perhaps that was not how you intended your statement and it was more in the value of breaking product?

Pumping money into wax is a HUGE risk/reward. Singles are easy, you can ascertain the market value and/or what you're willing to pay, and proceed accordingly. In general, UD churns out crap now with little to no value unless you hit something big. And even then, what they perceive to be hits will still likely not cover your investment.

I realize most of us are in it for fun, but how "fun" is it to break wax and get like 15-20% of your money back? If I break wax, I don't need big hits, but I'd like to get cards of value that can I trade or sell for other things I want? That's the problem, UD makes garbage now and the level of creativity and ingenuity they take it to is where they want to go, no one to push them, no competitor. So they don't need to spend more money or invest to produce anything of higher quality if they don't want to?

It's like a meal for prisoners, basically here's slop, take it or leave it, nexxxxxxxxxxt in line! Haha

Ok I thought that might have been the case. I agree with the fact that opening product lately has been a lot more miss then hit. Combine that with how difficult it is to trade for lower end cards. The shipping costs are just too much to make this a fun as it once was. I miss doing group breaking hoping to hit some Roy cards but know that I would at least be able to trade the other MTL or COL cards for something I needed.

I’m not surprised as UD ePack is easy money for them.

But other than a few singles on COMC, I don’t buy much hockey any more. It’s mostly the same old, same old when it comes to products and players.

BIG dislike. Its not that I hate Upper Deck, its that they are in bad need of a push. Their stuff certainly isn't garbage, but its far from exciting. Every new product (if you can call recycled products 'new') is very 'meh' to me.

I'd assume multi-year to get UD locked it with them. It would make sense for both sides.

But yeah, it sucks for the collector.

And I'm with you, I like cards produced by Upper Deck (I have a lot of them in my collection), and while I don't want them to 'go away' or anything of the sort, they need to do a lot better and being pushed by other card companies can go a long way here in my opinion. Plus giving other card companies the creative freedom to produce NHL Licensed cards would be great for them and all the different collectors out there.

I am on the other side of the coin on this one. I have to say that I prefer having the license alone as I think its better for the hobby. People have very short memories of what it was like when Panini had their license.
