Upper Deck question regarding redemptions

Guess I'll post this here since it is the only place it will get a response.


Never new the answer or understood this about redemptions, and I know some on this forum know quite a bit about the inner workings of UD.

I got a Montana Exquisite as a replacement card /10, just had read a post where someone got a 05-06 OVY /25 as a replacement.

Why arent these cards packed out??? I understand that they hold some back as replacements, but arent those usually unnumbered---But are there two 1/10s for my card now and two 5/25 of the OVY out there.

Hope someone can help. Guess I'm just curious

No...I believe they now hold back numbered versions now. I think a lot of people complained about UD's old habit of hand numbering replacements, which devalued the cards slightly on the secondary market.

I don't think so. I think what they likely do is that with a run of say 25, they keep #1-3/25 in house and send the rest off to pack-out.

That's kind of what I figured as well Steve but it brings me to this:

Does that mean if they say look for such and such card out of 5, 10, 25, etc, we can assume it has a few copies that have been held back?

It worries me a little, some of these cards we never see.............

Look at the Phaneuf/Nystrom /100. Maybe it wasn't put in the product but we have seen a tonne of those released lately, as if they held back not 2 or 3 but half of them!!!

That's a different story altogether. As I recall, the Phaneuf/Nystrom was a redemption in 05/06 SPA, so they probably cracked all the Wave 2 for 06-07 SPA and dumped all the redemption cards in the trash because they finally had the cards in hand...probably too late to pack into 06-07 SPA.

As for the question as to just how much of the product ends up in the market... don't worry. It will eventually all make its way to the secondary market through redemptions or giveaways.

Must be a very small quantity broken by blind mutes who work for 10 cents a day and are afraid to point out any problems for fear of being unable to feed their families if they don't tow the party line.
