Upper Deck sues Leaf

NO opinion yet on these suits, just want to say though that I really enjoy Paul Lesko's writing style. He makes it easy to follow for those of us not legally edumacated. Will be watching this with eager anticipation.

I totally agree. His articles are very insightful into areas that many of us don't have access. You can find his previous work in his archive.

Some VERY interesting insight into the situation, including an entire laundry list of alledged bullying tactics by UD.

Perhaps the biggest nugget from the complaint is the following:

…Upper Deck induced Leaf to provide valuable confidential information regarding Leaf’s business by fraudulently asserting an interest in purchasing Leaf’s hockey assets. Upper Deck’s subsequent actions clearly show its prior “interest” was a false pretext to further harm Leaf.
 
Wow...the thought that Upper Deck could have potentially purchased the "In The Game" brand from Leaf is kinda disturbing. Good thing they were just being underhanded in finding out more about Leaf's inner workings.
 
I am very interested in how this plays out. I m neutral on the topic.

If UD was at any point serious, my guess is they were more interested in getting rid of Leaf and accessing their exclusives. I don't think the ITG brand under the UD banner would have any selling power.

Could very well still happen:

"I suspect this case will end in less than a year, confidentially…and with the purchase of Leaf’s hockey properties by Upper Deck."

That's obvious...they'd be buying it to shut it down. Still, they would maintain ownership of the ITG brand no matter how you look at it. I'm kind of annoyed that they own the O-Pee-Chee brand.
 
I bet Topps is looking at this closely for several reasons... Assuming they get a Hockey license, by buying Leaf, they would get a jump start on the upcoming RCs. Joe Valeno is still being predicted as a Top RC, right?

His stock as a top prospect has fallen off based on the recent rankings but we're still months away from the draft yet in any case...

Why is that? Is it because they took a staple low end brand and turned it into a $100 a box product? :speechless:

Veleno has fallen outside of the top 10 in a lot of rankings. Not the marquee name that Leaf was hoping for.
 
Would of been interesting if UD had leafs inventory. Bobby Orr patches, Maurice Richard ect. Designs may not have changed, but player variety would deff go up IMO
