Vanek traded....

Sabres supposedly had an offer to make Vanek the highest paid player in the league. He turned it down. Wants to play for a playoff team. Fair enough. So smart on the Sabres to get full value for him now.

Isles may make the same pitch, but if money isn't a motivating factor, then the Isles may have paid through the nose for a rental. Rumours of Vanek wanting to sign in Minny.

Snow is desperate to make the playoffs, and has no choice now. If the NYI don't make the playoffs for some reason, the 1st r pick could turn out to be 1st overall.

Here is how I see the trade:

Buffalo: couldn't sign Vanek to an extention so it was all about the what they could get. Regier played hardball and said the price. Take it or leave it. He will already be shipping Mouson for a 1st come trade deadline. That would make 2 first and a 2nd for Vanek. For a rebuilding club he got great value!

Islanders: Moulson did not sign an extention. Maybe he said he wanted 8 million, maybe he wanted to go back to California, no one knows. He may have played hard ball with the Isles. Islanders took a look around and said, who do we want to play with Tavares? They chose Vanek and realized they wouldn't be his first choice in the off season. Is he worth the price, they think he will be. Time will tell how this trade pans out but I like that Snow had the gumption to do what he thought would make his team better. Having Grabner, another Austian, could help as well. You can't hit a homerun if you're afraid to swing for the fences!

I think the Islanders are alittle top heavy at this point though. They still need some serious help on defense. Even with Vanek I'm not sure they're a cup contender. They should make a trade for Miller at the deadline that would really help their case if they make the playoffs. I think Vanek has the potential to hit 40-45 goals this year with JT, but that's a gamble. It's a high risk high reward deal for the Islanders none of us know for sure how it will turn out. I think the Sabres got the better end of the deal. The Islanders better hope they can resign him. Vanek will be looking for one more long term deal and a lot of money. If I'm Vanek, common sense tells me regardless of what they offer as a contract extension I test free agency regardless. Why wouldn't you? As decent of a season the Islanders had last year they're still not an established team. Rumor has it with Heatley coming off the books in Minnesota that Vanek has already had interests in possibly signing with his home town team and Pomminville being there is a plus. This is all guessing and here say at this point but we will see how it all pans out. I've always liked the Islanders and LOVE Tavares so I hope it all works out for them.
