To all you referees the head of officials Don VanMassenhoven said that RULE 59 is in play here and it’s the referees discretion. Everybody has their own opinions, but my question to you guys is why in the world is Cody Eakin even using his stick there, just get into position and play defense. I agree with I believe it was Bossy22 who said this is on Vegas, 4 goals allowed, why didn’t Gallant call a timeout after the 2nd goal to settle his team down. Also the Sharks got bad call(s) against them game 2 Couture wasn’t even in the blue paint as Fleury flopped around like a seal out of water(Kelly Sutherland on that call). The missed trip on Sorensen in OT, the spear by Colin Miller on Timo Meier in front of the net. The referees see this in fast pace not slow motion so they have to make a call 1 way or other.
For Mr.Griceboys, Good luck with your new coach this year, just watch the games closely as McBufoon changes lines faster then Usan Bolt runs, guy drove me nuts.

I agree with this. If it's a critical call/major penalty, go to video replay. I don't think fans would mind at all, if it is to get the right call. I think it is more detrimental to the game that calls like this change the outcome of a series.

For me the "only 1 mistake" doesn't hold water, when the mistake is the critical one. That's life. Owe up to it and fix it. You would think it is a serious blunder if your bank missed one of the zeros in your account and then a series of mishaps happened to you because of it. If the bank said to you that you should have caught the mistake, I don't think most people would accept that as a reasonable excuse.

Tough mistake to make for the refs, and I empathize that they have a hard job. But just like the players, the refs have to step it up in the Stanley Cup Playoffs too.
 
So for all us referees out there, I’m retired by the way with 20 years experience, but I think it’s funny because it’s NOT a bad call, I think for the first time the refs made the correct call, because and here I’m not completely sure of the exact wording because minor hockey Canada and the nhl rule book are completely different but if an injury results from and infraction a 5 min major should be the call, which is funny because you rarely see it anymore but I remember players gettin 5 + gm all the time back when I was s kid, but oh well it’s just a game and they don’t pay me for any of it any ways, hope y’all having a great week

This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever read! A refs call compared to a bank teller! Give me a break. Sports are a human thing, that’s what makes them appealing!!! Is it annoying the once in awhile it makes an impact? Yes! Do I want to slow down the game, every game, for the 1 in 1000 games it really would matter? Not in your life! Players mess up all the time and they get benched or nothing. Refs have a high standard to meet and if they mess up they may miss a game or series! It’s a big deal. They are doing an incredible job and I don’t want even more power taken away from them! Has the reviews helped on goalie interference? Very debatable and yet it’s really slowed down the game so someone with less experience can blow the call. No thank you!!!

Why is it so bizarre? It's a job. You are paid to do perform at a certain level. And everyone is human, and we all make blunders. Sometimes the blunder is caught in time and sometimes it's just a minor mistake. But when it is a major blunder and there are significant consequences to the mistake, then there is a some sort of accountability. My point is that we would not tolerate such a mistake and say to the bank teller, you did a good job on the other 1000 times you got my account correct. Then use my analogy with a doctor, or any job that demands a high performance level.

For me the appeal of the sport is the gamesmanship/competition. What doesn't appeal to me is the flaws in the system. i.e. I don't like the current playoff bracket system because Tampa would have played Boston in the 2nd round (moot point because CBJ had other plans). Other different examples in sports is the missed pass interference call this past playoffs that cost the New Orleans Saints a chance to compete in the Superbowl. The non-call on Gretzky's high stick on Gilmour. The "memo" that got sent out mid-season that allowed Brett Hull's OT winner to stand vs Buffalo.

Look I'm not trying to beat down on the refs as I said before. But IMO the wrong call was made. Does it overshadow the rest of the job they did? Yes. Should it? No. But the reality is that it does. A good job by a ref is when they do their job and they aren't the centre of attention after the game. It was a tough call, and in this incidence, I think a long look has to be made at how to improve the system so to minimize this from happening again. If it means video replay, sure, let's have a look at it. Otherwise it just appears on TSN's top 10 missed playoff calls. Just like when the 2nd linesman was implemented. It was to help improve the game. There will be pros and cons on whatever change is made, but let's try it. To me, better than doing nothing and just saying it was a one off.

Just curious, do people really find the games slow? I compare it to baseball and basketball (in last 2 minutes of a close playoff game), and I don't find the game slow at all. I think the games have gone by faster than 20-25 years ago, with all the changes to speed up the game.

As mentioned before, maybe put it in as a coach's challenge. I'm all for a healthy discussion. For me, I'm not satisfied with status quo, and I'm not a Vegas fan. I'm a hockey fan.
 
I think this is going to allow coaches challenges on certain calls which is needed. Which is funny as this was a correct call after the fact as a cross check causing injury qualifies for this major but it took a lot of review. Same as missed puck over glass call last night but also when its called but it touches top of glass or people getting high sticking penalties from team mates sticks. I embrace technology and perfect games
 
IMO, it is a tough call because the initial cross check cannot be said that it directly lead to the injury because Stastny was the one that actually ended up unintentionally knocking Pavelski down. To me, it was a hockey play that led to an unfortunate outcome. I do not believe it was Eakin's intent to knock him over and injure him, nor do I think it had enough force to cause the injury on it's own.

I know calls like boarding/cross checking from behind into the boards is a much more clean cut call.

To me, this one felt a bit reactionary because of the injury. Cross checks like than happen in all games and isn't usually considered a dangerous play because very rarely does a player get injured by that type of play.

I do hope Pavelski is ok. The injury looked pretty scary. Given that he already had his teeth knocked out by a puck earlier in the series, this cannot be good for concussions.

You’re in the wrong sport. Only in video games will you get perfect games. They added review on offsides after a horrendous miss. Almost everyone wishes they hadn’t opened that can of worms. They added goalie interference reviews, if anything that just mucked it up more. Video reviews are great to see if the puck goes in the net. Every other use has been a mistake!
 
I must say Vegas owned that game. Sharks looked terrible! Then all of the sudden an awful call by the refs. I feel bad the guy was injured but that ruined the game. Even a double minor would have been max. The fact that someone made it a 5 min major is what angers me. There was no reason to call that. If you want to split hairs then take a look at the Saints getting screwed out of the super bowl last season. So for all you refs defending the call, take a step back and look at what it does cost the other team...


Take a trip down memory lane and a few years back do you remember Boston Burins making that unbelievable comeback with only a few mins left in their season? It may have been against the Leafs (foggy on that) but they ended up pulling their goalie and scoring 3 goals to take it to overtime and win. Yes, it could happen just like that but there wasn't a 5 min major involved. So for me what's done is done but the refs blew it BIG time on the call. What ever happened to a double minor????? how in the heck does a MAJOR make sense?
 
I watched it again today on NHL Network. The referees screwed up, but the only thing they screwed up was the wrong penalty on the wrong player. It should have been a 5 minute Major for Interference to Paul stastny under rule 56, which allows a referee to call a major for interference. Stastny had no reason to do what he did, it was clearly interference, it resulted in an injury, so they would be 100% justified in making that call. Bottom line in my opinion is Vegas has no one to blame except for their own player, Stastny. There’s 10 minutes left in game 7, you’re up 3-0 in a game you have completely dominated, and you go and do something absolutely selfish and stupid like that, sorry, you deserve the penalty and the loss.

Maybe the should look at replay(or a challenge) on double minors or at least 5min penalties. For 1 they don't happen every game so the delay would not be often. Heck it doesn't happen often but a high stick could be a teammate mistaken for the other teams player(though most of those are 4mins)or opposing player lifting a stick
 
I would love to see replays but that's the grey area because what other sport does this? It's kind of like "not being able to challenge a penalty/whistle.

I hope something changes tho because it makes me angry when people say "if Vegas would have killed the penalty or blocked a shot they wouldn't have lost."

Take a look at the saints getting screwed out of the superbowl.....if only the saints would have made the 1st down on a different play. Or if only they could have stopped the other team on a certain down... that's why it's a BS excuse. Vegas should be in the next round but the refs blew it!
