Venturing to the dark side....advice needed

Alright, I'm gettin' fed up with the NHL lockout amongst other hockey hobby related issues. It's time for something new. I'm looking to get some high end boxes from my seller this week. I need suggestions and average prices.

I know Leaf Limited looks good. What do you get per box, and what do they run?

How often do the Rookie Auto Patches appear in SP Authentic?

What's a good price on boxes of SPx and Ultimate.

What other high end products have pretty good returns, and what do they run?

Hoping to post my first high end football breaks this Thursday....

Limited owns! SPa has auto patches every two boxes. Ultimate for $350>_ is fair. I call dibs on Shockey & Michael Boulwares! kyLe

ive switched over to football also and leaf certified is a hit or miss product. spx is good and so is sp authentic (which now has more patch autos) spx i think goes around $125 and spa i have no clue for yet.

If you wanna shell out the money, Ultimate Collection is likely the better buy than anything else. People complain about the thin stack of cards that around $300 will get you, but why bother with a ton of commons when more often than not, you will get a nice hit? I've seen lots of dud boxes from SPA this year too.
 
Please keep the replies comming. I am in the same boat with other disgruntled hockey collectors, and it is kind of scary venturing into the unexplored waters of football cards.
 
If I were you, I wouldn't mess around with too many UD products. I'd go for some Limited, Hot Prospects [arguably one of the best of the year], and if you want a UD product, go for Ultimate. Good luck!
 
lot of people are switchig their collecting habits with the long lock out,

perosnnaly i have gone back into baseball and might consider football also as there wont be any new products for hockey for a while
 
Well, tomorrow's the big day. I think I'll try some Leaf Limited if he has some and a box of Contenders. I'll do it live tomorrow some time. Or if time doesn't permit, I'll give the summary and scans afterwards.
 
Hey guys i'm on this group too of hockey lovers gone mad!! Although i've done football for awhile now. Chris here's my 2 cents, did 2.5 boxes of SPX blah!! Garbage usual hit and miss UD product, one boc of SPA not too bad better for te buck but i got a rookie patch not a good one mind you but at least i got one. Ultimate really risky i did two boxes now and the last box was yesterday actually got Marino jrsy, Vick Jrsy, Deangelo Hall RC auto (throwin up BLAH!!), a sweet looking Bledsoe patch, and a nice Phillip Rivers non-rc auto #/275. Not bad but I would not get anywhere close to what i paid for th box. The first box was ok it had a Kevin Jones auto rc. I did 2.5 boxes of Limited and i think by far the best and nicest of all the high end stuff. MAybe you may want to get a box of Contenders this week fairly priced and four autos per box. Anyhow good luck Chris on the new venture, it's fun and not furstrating cause there is actually some NFL action going on. Anyone wanna buy some hockey cards? I am really close to blowing them out!! Maybe when they finally call an end to the season it'll push me over the edge and i'll sell them all.

SP Authentic has ****ed since 2001... I'm sure this year's ****ed too. All Upper Deck products basically **** in football. They way over-produce their autographs and material cards (jersey, football, etc).

I've heard only good news about Leaf Limited so that would probably be a safe buy. Havn't heard anything about Ultimate but I wouldn't go for it. Too many disappointments with last year's Ultimate.
I've also heard some VERY good comments on Topps Signature Edition and Playoff Prime Signatures. I would definatley try one of those.

Upper Deck anything... maybe except for Ultimate... i dunno
 
oh yea... prices from CharmCityCards... Their prices are on the cheaper side so I would expect to pay a bunch more at a card shop.

Leaf Limited - 4 packs/4 cards per pack - $229 (1 auto or GU'd/pack for sure)
Playoff Prime Signatures - 1 pack (tin)/4 cards per tin - $72 (1 auto/tin for sure... chance of 2)
Topps Autograph Edition - 4 packs/5 cards per pack - $189 (4 autos/box for sure)
 
I stuck my neck out on Football as well and I ordered a box of Leaf Limited from shnabbles.com - $206 delivered.
 
I'm in along with the rest of this bunch away from hockey, although I've been collecting FB and BB since I got up and running in the 80s. I've opened one pack of this year's hockey and if you ask me, that was one too much.

Although I've cracked a case of Bowman Draft Baseball, Leaf Limited and Contenders would be my calls as well. I've opened Bowman Chrome, SP Authentic and SPx this year. Those were definite hit or miss breaks - for me though they were unqualified misses. I have opened a pack of Limited, with possibly a box to follow. I might open a box or two of Contenders this weekend, if my guy has any.

Topps Sig and Playoff Sig were horrible, way to many people shelled out the $60-75 for a tin and got a $5 auto.

And the only thing on the Topps checklist were Vick and Ben, Vick will make you back a pack but not a box and good luck hitting a Ben...
