It's an interesting swap for both teams...

TSN said:
The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Jarret Stoll and defenceman Matt Greene.

The Oilers believe that with Sheldon Souray, Visnovsky helps solidify their powerplay. And with the development of Andrew Cogliano, Sam Gagner and Robert Nilsson, Edmonton had too many forwards.

Plus, Stoll is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next year while Green will be a unrestricted free agents in two years.

Visnovsky, 31, posted 70 goals and 209 assists in 499 games with the Kings since being drafted by Los Angeles in the fourth round, 118th overall, in 2000. He became the first Kings defenceman to lead the team in scoring in 2005-06, tallying a career-high 17 goals and 50 assists.

The 5-10, 188 lbs. native of Topolcany, Slovak Republic, also added on assist in 12 career post season games.

Stoll, 25, tallied 59 goals and 106 assists in 186 games since being selected by the Oilers with Edmonton's second round pick, 36th overall, in 2002. The 6-1, 210 lbs. native of Melville, SK, Canada, also has added four goals and six assists in 24 post-season games with Edmonton.

Stoll was an assistant captain for the club in 2007-08.

Greene, 24, has one goal and 12 assists in 151 games since being selected by Edmonton in the 2nd round, 44th overall, in 2002. The 6-3, 233 lbs. native of Grand Ledge, Mich., has added one assist in 18 playoff games with the Oilers.

The Edmonton papers felt Stoll was a mega-disappointment in Edmonton this year, so his time was up. Visnovsky's great on the power play but stinks in his own end.

Such a good trade for the Kings.

Got rid of Visnovsky's ridculous salary while adding a big defensemen which the Kings needed in the meantime. Stoll is a great depth addition at forward.

I'm excited for next season.

SIGH...we cant have 4 young d man...need some vets in there. Blake needs to sign and the kings know they need him, so he will get a ridiculous salary. I know nothing about matt greene, so i guess we need another vet. go for campbell?

This could work for both teams. The Oilers get a proven offensive defencemen and Stoll gets another shot. He should do well in LA

Team is getting younger but I have mixed feeling. I am not familiar with the players from Edmonton. Can anyone who watches them regularly tell us how they play? I can tell you that Lubo had an off year last year and should put up better numbers.

sad to see lubo go but if it will actually make the team better, go ahead. Deanlo needs to get us a goalie. And if its emery then we riot.

Stoll has struggled terribly since he had his concussion problems two years ago, but is a solid faceoff guy, but that only works so far. Greene is a tough defenseman to play - but he's been injury prone the last couple of years and always gets called for marginal penalties. If he's a 3 or 4 D, he'll be fine

It's not a good time to be a Kings fan when they trade your team's 2 favorite players away in a 9 day span...both to division rivals no less.

Lol...still got my big 2. Johnson and O'Sulli. And the big one, in every meaning of the word, Brian Boyle!!! But yeah some fan favs are gone :(

I honestly don't know how to feel about this one.

I was bummed when Cammalleri left since I knew he was a pure sniper, good for 25-40 goals a year. But on the flip side I knew they would get a great pick to help rebuild the team.

They did just that at pick #13 with Colten Teubert and addressed the major need of rebuilding their defense along with Doughty and previous young draft picks like JMFJ and Hickey.

That helped ease the sting a bit.

This one, I dunno? Unless Lombardi sees somehting I don't or he plans on putting Doughty and the kids in the lineup this year and letting them grow as a young d group..............Matt Greene...........................????????

I know all about Stoll, solid depth forward........Lubo is a vet and has terrific offensive skills. That said, he drove me nuts with turnovers last year........

I'll wait and see how this one pans out but right now I am mixed in my feelings...........

Stoll has the skills to replace 25+ goal scoring for the Kings, especially considering he will be surrounded with better offensive talent than he has been in Edmonton. He's good in the face off circle but has some health issues. Greene is a slow and physical defenseman who is a 5th or 6th d-man at best. He doesn't have much upside in my opinion. He was also heavily nicked up last year. Both will be FA in the next two years as well.

Visnovsky gives Edmonton what they expected Pitkanen to give them. A 2nd PP quarterback to go with Souray. Pitkanen will likely be gone now I would think. If not then Edmonton will have 3 offensive defenseman who can carry the puck, work the offensive end and be liabilities in their own.

What's with Lombardi bringing in another injury prone player?? Did he not learn anything from the Cloutier debacle or Nagy and his 38 game season??
And since when did the Kings need to start dumping salaries. At this rate they are going to have trouble meeting the minimum unless they decide to make some other underachiever rich like Handzus who while he did dress for 82 games he only showed up for 24 games, scored 7 goals and was a minus 21. And wasn't he supposed to be a defensive shut down guy??
LOMBARDI HAS GOT TO GO

I'm also not sure how I feel about this deal,
I think Visnovsky is a good player, brings good puck movement, and is a veteran presence on a young team.

That said, I think Stoll will turn it around, he's had a few rough years, but, he's going to LA where he'll be able to hang out w/ his current or ex (I'm not up to date on it) girlfriend in Rachel Hunter.

Greene to me is the swingman in the deal, he was a real nice physical presence on the blue line, and while an occasional liability in taking bad penalties or getting beat, he was still able to instill fear in the opponent.

Hopefully it works out for both teams.

Here's a article from a Czech newspaper (many thanks to MadArcand from HFBoards for the translation):

The major news of Monday morning in hockey circles in Slovakia was undoubtedly the unexpected trade of Lubomir Visnovsky from Los Angeles Kings to Edmonton Oilers for Jarret Stoll and Matt Greene. This information surprised not only the fans and experts, but also the 31-years old offensive defenseman himself. Last summer, Visnovsky signed a new 5-year contract for 27 million dollars, which goes in effect next season. The contract also contains a no-trade clause, according to which the club can only trade the player to another team, if the player agrees to it. But the Kings used pretty much the last chance to avoid this clause, since it kicks in at 1st of July.

"I'm frustrated and very sad. They pretty much didn't do anything that they couldn't, according to the contract. However, there was a verbal deal under the table, according to which they shouldn't trade me at all. They told it to me and my agent straight into our faces a year ago, when we were signing the contract. 'You're our player, we won't trade you.' Even the owner called me back then and told me: 'Lubo, your home ain't Bratislava and Slovakia, it's LA. You'll play here for us. We're happy to have you here, and you'll stay here.' So I was 100% sure, that I'll stay in LA, and if they wanted to trade me, that they'd trade me after a mutual agreement, so both sides were content." stated Lubomir Visnovsky on a press conference about this trade.

Ha,
That's quality,
hopefully he shows up in Edmonton...it's a little different than LA.

That's quite the (insert more crude word for jerk here) move by LA's management.
