Cheap $$$, short term ... Vokoun wants to win now!! If he has a great season he can cash in next year ....

Also the Caps are up against the cap, they ony have $545,000 left (per capgeek) and still have to sign ...

RFA
Troy Brouwer
Karl Alzner

This is going to resemble the Flyers goalie situation from a year ago. As a Pens fan, I couldn't be happier. This has train wreck written all over it.

Sour grapes... lol Plus I don't see the similarity, except that the caps have three legitimate tenders. Two with the caps and another on the farm as insurance.

To me this is the best signing of the Year so far in terms of money for value..

I'm liking this pens fan,

I love this move. A legit veteran goalie for half of what COL is paying Varlamov? Done and done :)

I'm all over this one as well. He's going to be a great mentor for Neuvirth, IMO.

Exactly like it. Only they signed a very good goalie at a very reasonable salary and still have some very talented young prospect goalies who have proven they can win in the NHL. Other than that exactly like it

The part where the starter from the beginning of the previous season AND the starter from the end of the previous season were injured and the Flyers were forced to go with their backup and a rookie?

1) If you have 3 goalies, then you have no goalies
2) How many playoff games has Vokoun won as opposed to Fleury? That's an absolutely absurd comment.
3) No, the part where all 3 goalies the Flyers had for the playoff run this year resembled that of Swiss cheese.
4) If you have 3 goalies, then you have (let's say it again) ZERO goalies.

If Vokoun is such a great goalie, then why did he have a total of two offers? If he's so great, why 1.5 million a year? If the Caps are pinning their hopes on Vokoun getting them to the Cup this year, the players should invest in some new golf clubs because they will need them early.

Yeah...Leighton started all of 1 regular season game and one playoff game last season. Bob and Boucher had the rest.
2) How many playoff games has Vokoun won as opposed to Fleury? That's an absolutely absurd comment.
He has won 3 games on pretty shabby Nashville teams, similar to Fleury going 1-4 in his first postseason. How about stats? Save % of .922 (Fleury's is .916) and GAA of 2.47 (Fleury's is 2.45). So on playoff teams not as stacked as Pittsburgh, his stats are as good as or better than Fleury's...unless you want to argue that the Predators teams he played on were as good as the Pens of the last few years.
3) No, the part where all 3 goalies the Flyers had for the playoff run this year resembled that of Swiss cheese.
Yeah, wish we'd had Fleury, with his .899 save %. We had to settle for Boucher, with his .904 save %. If only we'd had Fleury.

I'm not saying the Flyers had great goaltending last year, but they were just as good in the first round as Fleury was in the first round, until Boston dominated the Flyers and the goalies were hung out to dry. But to say that Vokoun isn't a good goalies because of his W/L record is really absurd; I prefer to look at the amount of goals he let in or the % of shots he stopped, but that's just me.

As for the offer, he got the $$ because there weren't many teams looking for a #1 in his price range, so the ones that DID need a #1 went with cheaper, less-experienced options. Vokoun basically had to take what he could get at that point.

And how many Cups have Vokoun and that 3 headed clown rotation of goalies Philly had won?

Just a question. So would Fleury have won a cup with the Nashville or Florida teams Vokoun was on? Or vice versa Vokoun on the Pitt team that beat Detroit?

I love how your only comparison for Fleury is that his team has won more, not that HE is better, or has better stats. I guess if Colorado had a goalie as good as Fleury, they'd have won the Cup last season (sorry Colorado fans).

Doesn't matter, let's deal in reality and facts here. We could play "if or what" all day long and place certain players on certain teams for the last 10 years. Fact is Fleury has played in 62 playoff games and is 38-24 in the playoffs and 1-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals series. You can give me save percentage and all that crap that you want to throw out there but what matters to me is a 61% win percentage when it matters. Not one Washington or Philly goalie has been able to carry them all the way home.

You guys can have your Vokoun, Bryzgalov, Bobrovsky, Holtby, Neuvirth, Boucher, Leighton or whoever on that musical carousel....I'll take Fleury every time when it counts.

Reality is that Fleury had a win percentage of only .43 this year and could not get out of the first round. He was missing the top 2 players on his team.... but YOU made the argument that it did not matter. Can't have it both ways.. can you??

I can't remember the last time a goalie stole a Stanley Cup - certian series yes - but not a Cup. It takes a team to do that.

I don't have to worry about it as I'm happy with Howard. I think condemning guys like Vokoun and even Bryzgalov is a bit harsh though as neither have played on teams as good as the Caps are. Now if you wanted to laugh at a guy like Nabokov I can understand as some of the Shark teams he was on were very good. Before you laugh at a guy like Vokoun I'd wait to see what he does this year on a good team. If he sucks and blows up in round 1, laugh all day long. As of now though I say it's a great move. Rather than going with 2 young guys they can watch and learn from a player who is obviously hungry!

If you want to knock Fleury for this year, go right ahead. All the Pens fans and everyone around the Pens agreed he was the MVP of this team and without him, the Pens would have been nowhere near the playoffs. We all were damn proud and satisified with the job he did this whole year and will no doubt make him a better goalie for next year and years after. It does take a team to win the Cup and next year the Pens will have the best team and walk away with ANOTHER Stanley Cup, not Vokoun and the Caps, not Bryzgalov and the Flyers and certainly not Howard and the Red Wings.

I'll delete my comment as it'll only throw gas on the fire!

Trevor and Bruce. Just remember a couple of things replying to this thread:

There are hockey fans, and there are some Penguin fans. The two are not necessarily the same thing.

Some Penguin fans are always right... just ask them, they'll tell you.

Funny thing is I can't say anything bad about Fleury as I think he is good. I just found it unfair to bash a guy (Vokoun) from playing on crappy teams his whole career.
I mean I know the hatred factor but reality should set in at some time!
