Weird draft outcomes (1994)

Just down the rabbit hole that is hockeydb and always get looking at draft picks and busts and steals. This one is just weird and struck me funny.

3 consecutive 9th round picks in the 1994 draft

217 - Quebec - Tim Thomas
218 - Philadelphia - Johan Hedberg
219 - San Jose - Evgeni Nabokov

3 goalies with long careers, consecutive 9th round picks!

I had no idea that was the case.... and all three had pretty unusual paths for getting to the NHL.

Two of those guys, never played for the team that drafted them.

and then there is Nabokov - I only recall this from reading it in a list of "bizarre" trades.

In the summer of 2000, Nabokov had 11 NHL games under his belt. Only 2 of those were wins.

The Sharks protected Steve Shields in the expansion draft.... but traded a 9th + Conditional pick to Columbus, and a 3rd + 7th + Andy Sutton to Minnesota for an 8th.... and both the Blue Jackets & Wild agreed not to take Nabokov in the draft.

Of course, Nabokov would go on to win Rookie of the Year in 00-01.
