Weird Stat of the Day...

I was just looking through the expanded stats in the Tuesday Toronto Sun. One specific stat made me shake my head.

Ryan Whitney leads the Edmonton Oilers in scoring with 24 points. Now, it's not the fact that he is a defencman (Atlanta, Edmonton and Phoenix all have defencemen leading their teams in scoring) though that is pretty rare. No, it's the fact he hasn't SCORED A SINGLE GOAL! He has 0 goals and 24 assists...

Weird...

Anyone else have a weird or interesting current stat? Ilya Kovalchuk and his production have multiple other threads, so maybe we can leave that one out?

Malkin 8 pts 5 goals + 3 assists in last 3 games since returning from knee injury! And you thought Crosby was HOT!!! Lets hope this lasts.

Ray Whitney has 4 goals and 17 assists. 3 of those goals came in one game

I was going to start one of these threads last night, there are a lot of suprising stats out there.

For one, the Thrashers are in first place in their divison.

On a related note, Ovy and Semin lead the league in missed shots (that helps explain the first 'stat' above...)

Dan Girardi of the Rangers leads the league in blocked shots.
Ryan Callahan is second in checks.
Sean Avery is first in PIM.
If you were to tell me 3 rangers would lead 3 stats categories in the beginning of the year, I would not have believed you....

Heres one for the Nucks fans, Manny Malhotra leads the league in faceoff percentage. He is the only players in the 60% range with 62.8%

Logan Couture (who???) leads rookies in goals and points, and has the league lead in both PPG's and GWG's with 5 each.

Out of his 30 assists, StLouis has 19 powerplay assists

Similar to Ryan Whitney's stat, Rafalski is has 0 goals and 18 assists

The Rangers lead the league in shorthanded goals, and have 3 players in the top 5 in SHG's. Prust leads with 3, Dubinsky and Marc STaal each have a pair.

Luongo is only 3 for 8 in shootout saves. BOB is 1 for 5.

Kiprusoff leads the league.....in short handed shots against.......He is also second in PP shots against and first in PPG's allowed.

The Panthers are second in the league in goals against average, they are 1 of only 2 teams with a positive goal differential and not currently in a playoff spot (they are +7, the kings are +15). They shutout the flyers 5-0 yesterday too

The Rags lead the league in road wins with a 12-6 record, but they are only 8-8 at home

Of Marty Brodeur's five wins this year, three have come via a shutout. I don't know what's more surprising; that he only has five wins or that he's operating at a 60% shutout:win ratio.

Toni Lydman is +18 on a team that is -10, Ryan Whitney is +12 on a team that is -24.

Johan Franzen can't score on the road - Home 12 Goals, Road 2 Goals.

30 odd games, Montreal hasn't had to go to a skill comp to decide a game.

as far as Whitney goes, the record for most assists without a goal is 29, set a very long time ago. he was interviewed on the Team here on Friday and they asked if he'd try not to score a goal until he ties or breaks the record, but the guys in the dressing room are razzing him about it, so the sooner he scores the better
