Just wondering how we as collectors approach trading. I know for myself that when I trade I really do not like to trade just for the sake of trading. When I trade I really only want to trade for cards on my want list. And recently that list has been much larger than it use to be. Back when I first started here on HI all I would trade for was Scottie Upshall rookies. Had many traders tell me I was unreasonable. But my point is that a trade should be designed to benefit both parties. I am not talking about sending a card here and there to help someone out. I do that as well to help out when I can.

So when I see someone that has a want list and I know I can help. Is it unfair of me to with hold the cards if he/she does not have anything from my want? As a collector/seller I am not looking to build inventory of cards I do not need or want. I do not mind trading in your favor if I am getting what I want.

So what are your thoughts? Am I unreasonable? Should I change my trading practices? Thanks a lot for your time, Winston .

Not trading because the other guy doesn't have what you want isn't a bad thing. If possible you could try seeing if any of your friends might want some of those items and you can trade with them too. I've done that before, but I don't think that NOT trading because of the items is a problem either. Because if you are on here long enough, you will see that some members don't have a lot of great stuff and there isn't anything you can do about it.

I don't have a problem with not trading because someone doesn't have your wants although personally, I don't mind trading for other traders if I know the other person needs a card of mine. Although if they don't have anything that I think I'll be able to move again, I will usually pass.

i like to trade, but lately, most of my traders have been of the lesser type, so it is harder to find people to trade with, and thats fine, sometimes if does feel like people are being unreasonable because you never have anything anyone wants(the big guns) so they end up passing on trades, but i understand because they would at least like to get someone they have some interest in. its a catch 22. just got to find teh right person to trade with, sometimes that takes some time. shoot someitmes i even pass on trades because the other person doesnt have anything i would want, usually i am very easy to trade with though.

People tend to get upset when you won't give them a card that they want, which I don't get. The only time I've been frustrated like that is in trying to pick up a 1/1, but otherwise, there are always others out there to chase. I prefer to be patient and maximize my return on things: it's a hobby, but I don't like to sell or trade something for less than I got it for unless I'm getting something I really want in return.

Winston, I don't think you're unreasonable at all. (I do appreciate the trade we did !)

I tend to be impossible to trade with. I'll only trade for cards that I need or know I can move along for another card I can use. So normally I locate a card I need and try and find something equal for it that the owner can use. There have been several cases where I have just sent cards to somebody who really wants something, but doesn't have anything I can use at that time. This obviously depends on how much I feel that the person in question is dedicated to his or her collection and that the items will be staying there for a longer while and will be appreciated. I never expect anything in return in these type of cases, but if people actually find something I have use for on a later date and sends it my way, that is a very nice gesture and something I truly appreciate.

There have been cases lately where I've been able to do trades very easily, for a change. A PM here and there, done deal for a PC item and both ends are happy campers.

I have a very large wantlist and trade quite a bit. Occasionally, I will trade for bait but most of the time I want to get something I need. And when I do trade for bait only, I expect the other trader to be willing to trade down a bit so I get something I can move at some point.

Bottom line Winston, your cards and therefore it's up to you how you want to trade them. I see nothing wrong ,everyone is different

Online trading is difficult these days. The basis for so many trades is $ value, which makes it hard as a lot of people feel they have to 'win' the trade to make it happen.

I used to trade for Hawerchuks all the time, but a lot of people started bringing me stuff and asking unreasonable amounts for them because they figured I'd pay or trade at a premium. So, I stopped pretty much trading and sold my two 3200 count boxes of traders, and only buy what I like now.

So Winston, I totally agree with you - ideally, a trade should benefit each party, whether it's to get a specific card you want, or to upgrade or change your trade stock. How you do it is up to you.

in my dealings if someone comes up to me and asks for a card that they need for a PC item I usually look at their stuff. If I can't see anything I can decide on or see a couple things that I like but think I am asking to much for what the other party needs. I simply just say I see a couple things I like for example Del Zotto YG, Masterpiece Auto's, Macias SPA Auto rookie. Then I simple just stat that I trust you throw something together and surprise me.

This is really only for trades that I do usually under $40 CV

So far sense I have been doing it its worked out pretty good. Plus I would rather be surprised by something someone put together rather than trade for a card that I really don't want

I rarely trade anymore. It's easier to get what I want just by purchasing it and it saves me from having a whack of stuff that just sits there without any interest or that I end up bulk selling to get rid of. Buy/sell is so much easier to make happen as almost everyone likes trading for money.

Winston, I totally understand your trading habits and in fact have adopted some of them as it doesn't do me any good to trade for other traders as I usually get stuck with things. If I could I'd sell every trader I have as it's easier to just buy what I want these days.

I am definately getting more and more with this train of thought. Seems way easier. Less PM's. I was trying to get another card for my Vanek PC and asked the guy how much BV or $ does he value the card four times and he never said a number so I just scratched that card off the list and moved on. I also do not mind helping someones PC for trade but I also want to do the same for me.

Hello Winston,

For starters you shouldn't change anything you are doing b/c you are one of the most generous people I have ever come across in my life. As far as only trading for cards you want in your PC, I think more people should do that. This hobby is getting too involved with making a profit that it is becoming slightly corrupt and if collectors only got cards they enjoyed and intended to keep this would not be the case.

I really prefer to trade only for cards for my PCs.On the whole I would rather just buy the cards I want and sell the cards I don't.

If I know I have something that a person is trying to track down for their PC, I will usually look beyond my normal wants to help that person out. I have run into situations though where there is absolutely nothing that catches my eye or something that could be moved at a later date and have had to pass so I do not see anything wrong with that.

I have found it much harder to trade (in general, not just here) lately, as everyone seems to be sticking with the same 5 or 6 top guys in the league or whatever the 'flavor of the month' guy happens to be.
