What do this year's rookies have to do next year to keep demand for their cards high?

Demand (and subsequently market prices) for players' RC's always seem to fall or level off in their sophomore season or 3rd season unless their production picks up significantly. Prices for Nash, Kovalchuk, Spezza, Zetterberg have all increased a lot, but their points totals are much more now compared to their rookie season.

Observing some of the recent prices for The Cup RC's of Crosby, Ovechkin and the other rookies, I'm wondering how well these guys will have to do next season to result in an increase in their market prices considering that they are already selling for huge amounts.

Crosby and Ovechkin are already 100 pt scorers, and I don't see either of their teams making the playoffs next year so a long Cup run (which would drive up demand) probably isn't realistic or likely. Would they have to win the scoring title?

Phaneuf, as a D-man....did he have such a strong rookie season that there is no where else to go but down? I don't see him being like a Coffey and being among the league scoring leaders. Would a strong playoffs would do it...?

Cam Ward - I see him falling demand wise as it seems he can only come down after a Cup win and Conn Smyth. Lundqvist, who already posted Vezina-contending numbers, would have to match that and succeed in the playoffs in my opinion. I see guys like Carter, Richards, Parise, Vanek having the most potential for an increase in demand as they have lots of room for improvements points-wise.

Any thoughts?
 
I totally agree that a lot of the 05-06 Rookies are gonna have a market correction in the upcoming year. A lot of Baseball, Basketball and Football guys have entered the hockey card market this year chasing the Hot RC's. I saw the same thing happen in those other sports with Lebron, and Big Ben.... With those guys out of the way and with all the flavor of the month Hockey collectors focused on next years crop, or specifically Malkin, I bet the market prices drop considerably in the upcoming year for all of this years Rookies. Now, Long term who knows what will happen, but I doubt there is much upside to a Cup RC of Crosby that is selling for $3K. Who knows, maybe I am crazy.:confused: That's my $.02. Mike

Mike - Keep saving... you are only $2999.98 short of a Crosby Cup RC. :p
 
To Maintain values, the big two are going to have to put up big two numbers.

Carter, Vanek, Perry, Getzlaf, Phaneuf, Wolski, etc. need strong starts and strong finishes th the season to keep their cards up.

The one that has the biggest potential to fall off is Cam Ward. All it takes is a bad start to the season . Someone like Colombus' Alexandre Picard could come out of nowhere and experience a huge jump if he's on the right line.
 
Any mid-to-low end rookie is going to need to win the Stanley Cup... and the World Series and Super Bowl... to keep demand near where it is now. I feel it's already starting to drop off for this tier of players, and probably peaked a while ago.
