im not well versed in vintage, but is the card really that bad?

thanks and any advice is welcomed!

Depends on what is more important to you.

For graded cards, if the card is off-centre, the grade can drop quite a bit, despite having pretty sharp corners. And the grade jumps a lot if it's centred despite having rough corners.

Another thing, is be patient. The prices can vary quite a bit from auction to auction so if you catch the right time, you can get a pretty good deal.

Lastly, considering combining your Christmas present for yourself to get a big jump in grade for a $150 more. Prices might drop during Christmas b/c people are spending money elsewhere.

Note the minimum price for graded Gretzky RC begins around $150, so IMO, you're not getting the best bang for your buck with the lower graded cards.

A rule of thumb I used to use was $50-ish per unit BVG/PSA grade for OPC RC, up to a grading of 6. So for a BVG 2, the most I'd pay is $100. BVG 4, $200. BVG 6, $300. BVG 7 and 8's would be $80 and $100.

Some people will say that KSA is actually 1/2 or 1 grade lower than PSA/BVG despite having same number. Although KSA has been a bit more strict recently. So compare the cards.

Also look for the dot on the shoulder. There were some reprints that got graded as authentic.

For a possible super deal, some grading companies are considered crap and collectors stay away from them. But if you're not picky about the grading company, then there could be a deal, but you have to compare it with other more reputable grading companies. So you'll have to do some research to get an eye for what the actual condition would be, and not the listed grade.

Beware of potentially faked/cracked slabs. Or numbers that look higher than what they really mean.

I think tiger tiger just schooled us....and it was awesome! I gotta jump in and say thanks.
That's gotta be one of the best replies ever!

Just another example to watch out for:

cracked case at the top.

If it's legit, then the card could go way cheaper than it should. But it's pretty hard without seeing detailed pictures or in person, if the case was just cracked or has been tampered.

If the case was just cracked, it would have been better for the seller to send it back for re-grading, and then sell on ebay.

Be curious to see where this one ends. The reserve keeps a lot of bidders away. Either I'd ask the seller what the reserve is or I'd throw a last second bids of $325-$400.

A 4.5 ended $40 more than the 1 that you were looking at. Close to the $50 per unit of grade.

Looks like the 6 and 6.5's avg about $70-$75 per unit grade. So keep your eye out for deals below this price around Christmas and the early new year.

Awesome information! Thanks tiger tiger!!!!

My two cents would determine a dollar maximum you would be looking to spend and then take some time looking for the best you can get for that price. Rather than let the quality of card dictate (you could end up spending more than you planned for then).

Regardless, have fun with the hunt for this iconic card. The search will be equally as memorable as the purchase and eventual ownership.

There's no rush.
