Something popped up that I was told I'd never see (a memorabilia item). I've asked about it to 20-30 collectors easily and I was told that there arent any out there. I kinda just accepted that I wouldnt be able to have one and moved on. Out of nowhere, someone contacts me directly with it, says that I get first shot at it but they are asking 350.00 for it...more than I have to spend on it.

I've started selling off my collection to put money toward the house my soon to be fiancee and I are trying to buy and I've gotten rid of my Hall of Famer collection so we could get this place. I dont really have anything left to sell, so I am at a loss.

So, when you have something that you've always wanted, what have you done when you simply couldnt afford it, knowing that you will likely never see one again? What lengths have you gone to get that special item?

Tom

I have pieces of my collection that I'd sell in a heart beat for that one card I want. Right now, I don't have a whale. But if I did, I'm ready for it.

It seems like 350 isnt so much that I cant find things to sell, but I already sold off stuff to help pay for our house. The item isnt being put on ebay, but theres another person interested that has more firepower than I do. I figure that this piece is so completely rare that if I dont snag this one, I wont get another.

Some whales just have to be let go.

I would love to have a Carey Price The Cup rc. However I feel paying over 500 bucks for a card is crazy. Yet I spend way more than that opening products every year. This is one screwed up hobby :)

the thing is that its not a card and its an item that wasnt supposed to be available to the public. Besides that, i dont have the funds to buy it now. Trying to find things to sell to cover the cost before it slips through my fingers, but its not looking good.

Your house and fiancee are more important than a piece of cardboard, even if it doesn't really exist. :)

If you don't have the funds then you don't have the funds. That's a lot of money, even in his day and age of 1/1s and Cup/Exquisite cards that could pay for a car.

I've passed on cards many times in the past because of cost. They were all cards I certainly would have loved to have, but I was able to sleep easier once it passed me by than fretting by over the buyer's remorse and kicking myself.

No one is forcing you to buy it, no one will force you to pass on it. Any no one will ridicule you later for letting it go.

Dude, he said several times it's not a card. :)

Anyhow, you could always sell a kidney.

Just to clarify, its a jersey.
More specifically, its a Ryan Garko jersey that he wore at Stanford for the College Baseball World Series. Stanford is very picky about what they let go of from their athletic department. This was sold for a "One Night Only" Auction. I know 10 Garko collectors, a couple of which have followed him since the minors and have never even seen one of these let alone have a shot at buying one.

I got lucky and my name was thrown int he right direction. I need 300.00 for this. Anyone interested in helping me land my best catch, shoot me a PM. Some things for sale have become available.

Thanks,
Tom

I found out more about this jersey for anyone that cares.

The reason its so rare is that there are only 2 of them that exist...and Garko has the other!

I'm up to 160 in paypal and need 190 more. Its been a struggle, but I am hoping some things go my way and some of the stuff I listed will find some takers.

thanks all,
Tom

Just an update:
Looks like theres a chance that a generous HI donor is going to front me the rest of the $ that I need to secure the jersey and allow me to pay them back. Not a huge load of money, but something out of the blue that I wouldnt have expected.

Will post if anything changes and I need to sell some more stuff.
Tom

wow, that's quite a story. I have been in several positions where I am looking for that one card that I want, i blow all my dough and then I see the card surface. There is also the case where you try to buy a 1/1 and the guy won't budge. He still has it and I am waiting for him to get bored of it but i am suspicious that he knows I want it and won't release it on purpose. A sort of evil hex on me hahahaa.

The 1/1 is a Wendel Clark Jersey card from 06/07 Upper Deck Artifacts.

Well, the person that said they were going to help me out and let me pay them back changed their mind, but I was able to make enough sales to get the item.

Here it is for anyone interested in taking a look:

Well, atleast you've graduated to asking people for help instead of just ripping people off. I guess that's a step in the right direction.

And before you try to spout off about how I don't know what I'm talking about or that you're a changed person now.....I'd hate to have to dig up all the saved files I have from your recent scam attempt on the Topps boards where you tried to pass of reprints (you roughed up the edges) as original tobacco cards that you "found". And that's just one of your recent scams.

A leopard never changes it's spots.

Nice to see a slimeball come out of the woodwork. I have plenty on you as well, so we can leave it at that.

No, sorry Tom. Your name calling and idle threats don't work. So we won't leave it at that.

Ok, here's a list of my "assumptions".

Your resume ----

Banned from Blowout cards site and you just joined Jan. 08. They were made aware of your thieving ways and took appropriate action.

Banned from SCF as well. I spoke to the Admin. and was told that they received multiple complaints of you ripping people off. So this isn't in your past as you sometimes like to claim. You're still a thief. Nothing's changed Tom. Funny, you joined there in Jan. 08 as well.

Here's the write up on you from the "Bad Trader" database. Which was recently updated by someone with a new mailing address that you've been using. Scroll to the bottom.

Here on Topps you list your name in your profile as Tom Allen. Not Tom Murray. Even is your middle name happens to be Allen, that is misrepresentation. In this hobby, that looks extremely bad when you won't use your actual name or address. But then again you have so many aliases you must know that by now.

Yea, sure looks like I don't know what I'm talking about. All of the Admins. from all of these boards must be wrong too. Funny Tom, how everyone is wrong about you and you're the only one who's right.....yet you're banned on nearly every sports card forum out there. Must be just some funny coincedence huh?

Again, people like you perpetrate things that they heard happen, pass it on to other sites and they take action based on other claims. As far as the situation with the cards on the Blowout board, I wasnt the one that made those posts and verified I wasnt. I wasnt banned, I voluntarily left since there was such an uproar. Even if I had made the posts, there was no mention in them about selling those cards, so I wouldnt see why it would matter anyhow. It appeared to be a "Show and Tell" type of thing. I got banned from several places using the same information that was continually passed around. I am not worried about it as anyone can tell you of my giving to others and ease of dealing. At worst I am a slow shipper due to my schedule.

You can cite anything you want. I can write something up about how you rob old ladies and steal their purses, then I can post it on the internet. Just because it is said doesnt make it true. Feel free to post more foolishness, doesnt really bother me much as I have dealt with enough people on here successfully that they will most likely see you for the troublemaker that you are. Yes, I remember, this isnt the first time you have posted something like this on HI.

Thank you for that explanation. So now that's 2 seperates sites that called you out of something and you didn't make the posts...someone hacked your account. 1 on Blowout and 1 on Topps. You can only get away withthe same excuse so many times Tom.

On the BadTraderUSA list one of your aliases was listed back in 2005 as Phillip Allen. Yet, as of Jan. 2008 you call yourself Tom Allen on Topps. Just another silly coincedence? Or am I "perpetrating" that you still use aliases and/or similar names that you were caught using 3-4 years ago?

Wait, I hear the excuse now...you called yourself Tom Allen just to take a jab at all of us that are lying and accusing of being a thief. That must be it.
