Hmm,... I am curious about this hobby sometimes. I have this 05-06 Cup Crosby AU RC Patch #/99 3clr and I have an 05-06 Cup Crosby AU RC Patch #/87 Gold.

Personally, I look at both of them as RC's - although the #/87 Gold is considered a parallel. I love my #/87 Gold card because of the colors working better with the card, and it has a nicer patch and a spectacular AU.

I noticed in the Lebron James Exquisite basketball AU RC patch year,... his gold #/23 card goes for SIGNIFICANTLY more than his #/99 AU RC patch. I am OBVIOUSLY missing something here.

What do you guys think? And what is "the standard" since I never really questioned it and took the position as a price taker. All of the more experienced and experts in the hobby,... please tell me how it is!!!

In this case I would go with the true rookie card - there is only a print run difference of 12 copies so it isn't significant enough to really notice that one is harder to find than the other and I think people in general would go for the true rookie card.

In the Lebron case - there is less that 25% production in the GOLD card which should impact the pricing much more significantly than the roughly 10% difference in the Crosby card.

I presonally would want the "true rookie" if I could actually afford it....though if I could afford it I would probably buy both eventually

I ended up in Beckett last march because of this very question. LoL.

Al Muir turned me from an informed person to a newbie, changing around my words in the clip.

The main problem is the status of the gold /87 has already been created. Now that people know that the gold /87 is worth less (even though it looks better and is a visable upgrade from the initial /99 card!) they will never consider it to be worth more.

I just think UD messed up real bad in this one... making the gold version look better than the /99 rookie and numbered to his jersey. Since this has happened, you get a lot of people thinking his gold /87 is the one to get.

This hobby is sad if you dont do your homework.

I pretty much agree with timber's assessment. LeBron's results of the gold are based on the print run. You would see the same effect if Crosby wore #17 as opposed to #87. If there were only 17 Gold copies the sales would be higher or at worst close to the true RC /99.

In this case I would say the true RC is the one to get for long term value.

99 - it's part of the set, if the print run was a lot less - as mentioned - it'd be a function of that. Just look at what happened with the Gold Phaneuf and Ovechkins

I understand what most of you in the thread are mentioning re: a difference of 12 copies does nothing to the price.

Take Ovechkin #/8 Gold for example,... most people were into those cards from $3500-5K (not counting the #8/8 for jsy number premium). And Ovechkin AU RC #/99's have sold for between $2500-$5K from my memory in the past couple of years. To me - that's pretty even.

As for the Phaneuf, 3 copies is nothing really and have sold for higher than the #/99's. I don't think this one's relative because you can almost treat it as a #1/1, IMHO.

OK - I guess to pinpoint my question:

WHO sets the standard for this? Does someone/company(beckett with the RC designation?) set this up and everyone follows? And how did things come this way - why are RC parallels not also considered RC's?

However - for "value", I'm not sure if the real RC is better "value",... I look at the #/87 gold as the better value,... same card, 12 copies less, both GU patches. Avg 3clr for #/99 ~ $10.5K; avg 3clr #/87 ~ $3200. Just my take,...

Stephen, I will add my .02...

First off with Exquisite it happens that the nba guys have much lower numbers on their jersey so the gold parallels are much rarer compared to Sid, when it comes to /87 as a parallel or /99 as his true RC the /99 wins everytime $$ wise. Now if Sid was numbered /23 or so it may be a different story.

Also, I used to know many huge players in the nba/nfl exquisite world. Money wise they put the hockey guys to shame and they were the main reason why 05/06 Cup took off, they started to tuck away cases early and often. When most hockey collectors were wondering about the $300 tin price the Exquisite guys were wondering why its under $600 a tin because they were used to their Exquisite prices already. When I used to speak to them they were amazed with the pricing of gold parallels as well. It seems hockey collectors are far far more picky when it comes to "true rookies" compared to nba. When we see a gold parallel most hockey collectors gauge the price lower then the true rookie, when it comes to nba cards they care more about the print run then the true rookie tag so Exquisite gold parallels sell extremely well because of this.

No question at all in my opinion. With the print runs being so close, I would take the true RC every time.

In fact, I'll take it one step further - even for rookies with RC print runs of 199or 249, I'd rather have the true RC, than the gold version, if the gold version has a print run upwards of 80 copies, all else being equal.

Stating the obvious here, but might just be the nature of the people or something... And maybe we've been fed that talk about rookie parallels being worth less so much over the years that now we just can't ditch the idea.

As for the poll question, I would pick the one with a nicer swatch, regardless of which card it may be.
