What does BGS "AUTHENTIC" Blue Label mean?

I assume this is usually geared towards authenticating vintage cards. If a modern card is graded as "AUTHENTIC", does that also guarantee the card's patch in the slab? Appreciate the experts chiming in.

No it does not gaurantee the patch in the slab. There have been patchs graded by BGS that were fakes. It only gaurantees the card as legit.

Yup, i concur, bgs authenticates the card, never the swatch. Isn't authentic alo leaving a possibility of altered or trimmed as well.

I have had a few high end autographs "blue slabbed" but only to protect the card (in the case of condition sensitive cards) and to show that the card was real before selling it (I've done this mainly with Topps UFC cards at the request of buyers because apparently there are fake Topps UFC cards floating around).

They will "authenticate" that the card is real and not a reproduction or has been altered (trimmed edges, recoloured, etc). They do not authenticate patch and memorabilia pieces. In all truthfulness, how is ANYONE supposed to authenticate memorabilia pieces? Not being facetious or anything, but the only people who know that the patch or jersey piece is real would be the card companies and keen eyed collectors with before and after photos.

Yes, though altered cards say "Altered" on the label.



As others have stated, Beckett makes NO claim regarding the patch.

Considering the Crosby Exquisite by any chance?

Thanks guys for posting. So, here's a message from the seller of the card I'm interested in with the Blue "AUTHENTIC" BGS grade:

"Yes, Beckett do authenticate the patch. There are lots of card rejected by beckett due to patch issue. This one is problem free."

So, that's not correct?

WOW,... that's all I needed to know,... thanks for saving me some $. I have won a fake, paid for one, and seems like everything I'm interested is fake. I remember why I pretty much retired. No #1/1's are going to be faked. Maybe I should refocus on that?

Tell him you don't want the card because you noticed the damage across the top of the window of the patch (under the name "Sidney Crosby") and you're no longer interested.

Usually when a newer patch card is slabbed authentic then it sends a red flag for me. Patch fakers know this loophole and exploit it.

BGS Blue Label is also an option when "Min Grade" is not reached on a particular card.
