I'm toying with the idea of building a set.
The only one I've done is the Canadian Tire Team Canada set. All others have been either shelved or sold off.

I'm considering the Engrained Stick set, I like the look of it and the checklist is interesting.

So lets here, what are you building and why?

Too many to name! My set projects might not be along the lines of what you're looking for, but here are mine.

I started with the Upper Deck set (S1 and S2) in 2011-12 because I liked the idea of having complete sets of Young Guns. This has been an annual project since.

Then I started going back to the original Upper Deck sets, and building them one year at a time, and I'm currently working on 1994-95.

A few years ago, 2017-18, I added O-Pee-Chee to my annual set building since it's probably the closest product to when I started collecting.

Every once in a while I'll work on a set because I'll pull a card and I like the look of it, just as you said - 2011-12 Contenders Patch Autographs was one that I spent a while building after pulling the Denis Savard from a box. That's probably the closest one to your example, as most of my set projects are base cards, but I enjoyed the challenge of this one.

2000-01 Aurora is also a big project of mine which started because I found a good deal on about 8 boxes, so I thought I'd give it a try, and I'm down to 80 cards, most of which are harder parallels but I'm making progress.

Based on my experience I would say that depending on the project, patience is a must. There are cards I've had to wait years for that don't even seem like they should be hard to find. But it's a nice feeling when you finally land it!

working on the sets I had as a kid. Had so many cards as a kid, sold them when I went to university, and now want most of the back again. Started with 89-90 OPC hockey working backwards im now working on 79-80. Started with 89 OPC baseball I am now on to 81 although I am still not done 87. Need one more sticker to complete the entire run of 80's OPC sticker books. Have a small start to the star wars set from the first film. Working on some of the insert sets from the 93 and 94 ted williams card sets.....think thats it. And not to over age myself....I didnt go to university in 89, in 90 I turned 16 and stopped being incredibly awkward around girls so cards kinda took a back seat.

Oh man, way too many to name. The reasoning behind it being that all the stuff I wanted that I couldn't afford years ago, now I have that disposable income. Only thing that sucks for me is that I'm still not back to work, so I've had to pull back a little. But off the top of my head:

Most licensed years ITG stick and jersey sets
All the Cup Scripted Swatches and Sticks sets
Most years Jambalaya and EX Essential Credentials sets
2013-14 Panini Prime Colors
2013-14 Dominion Stickside Signatures
2001-02 Titanium Dual Patches
2005-06 UD Notable Numbers
2003-04 ITGU Vintage Mem and Mem/Auto
2001-02 Parkhurst Heroes Dual Jerseys
2011-12 Contenders Auto Patches
2012-13 Fleer Retro Playmaker's Theatre

And so on hahaha

I have all of the base autos from the three epic signature sets from 1999, 2000, and 2001, but I still need the Gretzky from Century Legends that only exists as a gold parallel to technically have them 100% completed. It's shown up a few times on eBay but it's always a bit more than I want to spend.

My current project is the vintage memorabilia set from 2002-03 ITG Used. I'm down to just needing VM2 Plante and VM6 Beliveau. (I'll probably be making a post for these two in the Buy section soon). I collect HHOF certified autographs, but realized I had a big hole in my collection for older players who only have cut autos. I opened a box of 2003-04 ITG Used that I had been sitting on last year (which was an absolute blast to open) and pulled a beautiful Mosienko vintage memorabilia jersey piece. I got the itch to collect more early era mem cards, looked around on the web, and was drawn to the 2002 set. I love the design and the bigger relic swatches.

Otherwise, I'm pretty much chasing white whale singles at this point. I agree that patience is a must to healthily participate in this hobby and it's so rewarding when everything falls into place. I've been able to knock two of my long-term white whales off this year, including a 2002-03 Topps Glen Sather rookie reprint autograph. I've been after that card since the set came out!

I have two ongoing sets. The first is 1937-38 O-Pee-Chee. A dozen years ago I inherited a some old hockey and baseball cards from my grandfather. The only hockey cards were a few from this OPC set. I've slowly been building it and having recently added the big card, Toe Blake, I only have a couple cards left now. (Looking for 1937/38 OPC Bob Davidson!)

The second set is 2002/03 Private Stock Reserve Hobby /99 Rookies. I had pulled a PM Bouchard /99 rookie way back when the product was live and it was a big pull. I was young at the time and it was one of my first notable pulls. I traded or sold it long ago with a decent return. I remember always liking the look of that card so not long ago I decided to try and build the set. Down to just Leopold, Gerber, Thomas, Zetterberg and Spezza.

03-04 BAP Ultimate Limited Autos /19 (and the Gold 1/1's). I have since added the Hasek and Rocket Richard since I made this, but this has been a set I always wanted to complete and have gotten close on many occasions but life got in the way. Paypal ready if anyone has the missing autos

I’m working on 4 sets right now
18/19 SP Authentic Limited base autos, just need Crosby
19/20 SP Authentic Limited base autos, just need MAF and Svechnikov
05/06 UD NHL Generations dual and triple jerseys
18/19 the cup 75th anniversary HOF autos

I am working on 1970’s Opc sets. 1975-76 to 1979-80. I have aprox 95% done. Though I will likely do like I did with my 1980’s sets and continually upgrade them.

My goal is to finish these off soon and the work on 1970-71 to 1974-75.

Each year I also do the new Opc and Opc Retro sets.

Covid has given me the focus I need and also to start selling off my 1990-91 to 2019-20 Upper Deck sets. I really made the decision that I am an Opc guy.

The goal is to fund my Opc projects with selling off my Upper Deck sets and young guns.

Also, I have started a 1933-34 Opc graded set. Only have 1 card, but there are only 72 in the set.

I'm collecting the sets and inserts from Prizm 13-14, UD Team Canada 13-14, UD 1 13-14, Donruss 10-11 and MVP 98-99. I picked a few boxes of each and decided to build them. For the same reason, I'm working on the rainbow of jersey cards from Exclusive 02-03 and Pacific 03-04 (looking to get as much variants on color of the swatches).

My next project: Pacific Quest for the Cup 02-03. I'll be doing the base set and #ed rookies. I have a sealed box here and I've always been a fan of that design.

No sets for me.

Just have no desire to build anything. The only complete set I think I still have is my 89-90 OPC.

I usually do series 1 & 2 + young guns.

Right now trying to finish 19-20 CHL + Star Rookies + autos.

I love set building. Unfortunately the sets I am trying to knock off are popular and have low print numbers:
Centennial Habs autos: Need Steve Shutt
Retro Inkcredibles: Need Gretzky
Habs Parkhurst Original 6: Need HSHS 7,8, 9, 9A
Habs from Franchises: Need silver Harvey, Morenz dual and stick- have golds, Need HSHS Robinson and multiple duals
Habs subsets from ITG: Les Canadiens, Storied Fanchises, BBR subsets- need lots

Find it hard to start new stuff with these unfinished business sets.

Great idea for a post!

Well, I literally just finished a big 57-card set this week! Check it out on the Show & Tell Forum: http://hobbyinsider.net/forum/showthread.php?t=438830

Now, I am currently working on the 18-card 2015/16 Upper Deck Premier "Award Winners" Autographs /49 set. For this particular set, I just love the nice colour photos (with the exception of the Orr) with the applicable trophies. No background really, a straight forward design and most importantly hard signed autos with a fairly limiting print run (making it more challenging as well as hope the cards will retain value).

Currently 10/18 cards complete and still need:

  • SA-AO Alexander Ovechkin - Washington Capitals
  • SA-JJ Jaromir Jagr - Pittsburgh Penguins
  • SA-MB Martin Brodeur - New Jersey Devils
  • SA-NM Nathan MacKinnon - Colorado Avalanche
  • SA-PE Corey Perry - Anaheim Ducks
  • SA-RO Ryan O'Reilly - Colorado Avalanche
  • SA-SC Sidney Crosby - Pittsburgh Penguins
  • SA-SY Steve Yzerman - Detroit Red Wings

Sorry to post the wants in the thread, but can't resist any outlet to try and acquire the missing pieces!

Thanks!

I am currently building the Upper Deck A Piece of History Win Club sets.

I love the classic design of this set which has been around since 2001. UD has been adding to the set over the years across different products, making them fun cards to track down.

As a goalie & goalie collector, this set really brings a variety of goalies that I enjoy seeing represented in my collection.

I recently started my 2003-04 master collection, which is a collection of every hobby base set with SPs from 2003-04. It encompasses 50 sets and over 10,000 total cards. Why? I love 2003-04 products. It was the best year in the hobby by a mile. Every product from every company was great. It was also my first full year in the hobby, so I have extremely fond memories of that entire season of cards.

2013-14 Sp Authentic Master Set..... I started because I loved the 93 retro auto designs and the player selection from the 1990's and once I had those done I figured I should just collect all the cards

2013-14 Upper Deck Hockey Hero Auto's /15....Again loved the design and the 90's player selection.

1990's parallel sets..., pure nostalgia here. Great memories. Probably have 15 impossible sets to complete on the go. Looking for electric ice golds, artist proofs, press proofs and other stuff like that. Let me know if you have anything like that, at a decent price.

Still working on 19-20 UD Tim Horton's set. Just need to piece together the Franchise Duos...but not in a huge rush to finish as I know there is a lot out there. Thankfully I've got most of the big ones....I think the biggest one I need is Toronto.

Ever since 16-17 I've completed the set as I really like the binder and have been able to fill out all of the years since they sold the binder.

2015 All-Time GREATS Master Collection
Bobby Orr #/20

Here's what they look like and not sure which of the Gold version this card is.

I have 4 of them and probably dreaming the impossible dream as prices seemed to go up now!

X Indicates the ones I have and I have seen most of them at one time or another but price matters.

AUTOGRAPH TIERS #/20
Clear Spectrum
Copper Spectrum
Silver Spectrum
Gold Spectrum ?
Gold ?
Green X
Light Blue X
Dark Blue
Purple
Red X

WHY? Simple, I only collect HIS cards and only from certain sets.

I'm currently build a 19-20 OPC Red Prism, did the last 2 years and like the look of the cards, also build 19-20 SPA, I gave up on the last couple of years but I think I'm going to stick with 19-20. I'm also slowly building OPC base sets from 68-69 to 1979-80. So far I'm 4 cards from a exmt or better 73-74 set, then going to try for all light backs. Also about 75 cards from completing 74-75 that is exmt or better, and about 120 cards from 71-72 mostly ex or better. I'm in no rush to finish them, it's a slow project.
