What will be the difference on Retail and Hobby 05-06 Upper Deck?

My local card store says they are getting in boxes on Retail Upper Deck and not Hobby, is there going to be much of a difference in them?

I think with Retail there are no parallels at all and certain jersey inserts are not available (I don't think patches are available for example).

Also, the odds are less for getting any memorabilia. Last year hobby was 2:24 and retail 1:24.

Why in the world would a hobby shop get retail INSTEAD of hobby? Makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense to go with Retail. People ain't gonna be ripping UD1 for the game-used. If it's got Sid in it, it'll be smokin' hot. It's slightly cheaper and from what I understand from the local wholesaler, all that's available right now. Hobby's been allocated for weeks.

Upper Deck Hobby is some of the most popular stuff each year. It sells out anbd the price jumps large after the first week.

Hobby is extremely popular. A lot of people are "master" collectors of it. There are patches, auto-jerseys, and parallels that are very popular.

True this year the "home run" is the Crosby RC but people bust Hobby far more then retail for a reason.

Since the big attraction in hobby is the exclusive inserts - ie. parallels. The only game used that might get chased after would be the auto'd jerseys? in this stuff. Otherwise, if you're just set building, retail is the way to go.

But it also sounds like I can get Hobby for pretty much the same price as he's selling retial for at another place. I was just curious as to the difference.

I believe that a person needs to make up their own mind with what they want.If they like all those jerseys than go with hobby.If they only want rookies than retail is the way too go.The rookies are seated the same in both products.As far as price goes,retail should be a lot chaeper.I do know that by the case the retail is slightly higher.But the retail cases have 20 boxes and the hobby cases have 12 boxes.So it is really a lot cheaper by the box.But the best buy is really the retail blaster boxes.So with the amount of rookies in the set than I would sooner have 20 boxes to pull Crosby.Than to have only 12 boxes to pull one.With hobby you will most likely only pull one maybe two.With retail you should pull 3 maybe 4.With that said I believe it come down to jersey that most people do not want or rookies that everyone will want.Splite your resourses and buy a case of each.Just the way I see it.Good luck to all of you with this product.There will be a lot of it ripped forsure.Thanks,Winston.

PS:How comes no one seems to be talking about Artifacts that is due out long before UD1.

If I'm not mistaken, the odds will be better in the hobby for some of the jerseys - and I think the auto'd jerseys are hobby only.

Good points all, and I more or less agree.

With respect to hobby, you're paying for one extra jersey and a parallel. If you're a set builder, and knowing UD's jersey selection...would you pay the extra money? Wow, a Rico Fata jersey and a Dan Fritsche exclusive. Yee haw. Buy retail, build your set, call'er a day.

If, on the other hand, you're hoping to land the big fish AS WELL as do sets and such, hobby's the way to go. I don't intend to pay full price for the wax tho - I've got a couple cases lined up already at fairly decent prices, and I'll probably do two cases at Expo as I expect the price to be rock bottom. Maybe $700/case. Mmm. Case. Plus if you can capitalize on the UD booth redemption, you're laughing.

Steve - do you really expect cases of UD1 to be cheap at Expo?? It's not like there will be lots of selection on the wax...

EDIT: ...and let's not forget last year's retail that had all the patch cards in them. IMO UD1 retail gives the best bang for the buck.

Certainly do, Ryan. Recall Fall Expo of 03 and all the hype 'round Fleury, Horton, Bergeron, etc. Strong product and it was still available at cost ($72ish). Ditto most other products in the building. Same last year - most waxes were available at pretty much bargain basement prices, including the newly released H&P. ITGU was the rare exception to that rule.

Remember, a lot of the wax sellers come up from the US and would prefer to be hauling a lighter load on the way home. They're usually the ones who push the prices down.

Thank goodness for those sellers. The price of UD1 and Heroes & Prospects takes a big jump locally after the expo.

Hopefully priority signings makes a comeback.

Me - I'm just happy for the hype, would everyone please open tonne's of this stuff, it'll make it easier to find the cards I want cheap on E-Bay once everybody needs to make back everything they spent by selling all but their precious rookies. Anybody pulls patches or parallels of my guys below, let me know.

That's strange, used to be the UD parallels were just in the retail and not the hobby...but it has been a few years since I bought a UD box....
