I know this topic comes up quite a bit, but I'd like a little advice before I move forward...

I won an ebay auction recently and this morning my card arrived... in the dreaded plain, white envelope. Luckily, no damage to the card. Normally, in this situation, I would leave a positive and then a 3 for shipping charges (usually the PWEs show up on the $1.50 S&H auctions and I can accept that, not happily, but I accept it). In this instance, though, the guy nailed me with $3 S&H from Canada (I charge $3.50 S&H to Canada on my listings, but only ship with protection and padded mailers). His item description just said 'mint cond!!!' nothing about how he would be shipping.

I'm leaning towards the neutral and a 1 for shipping charges, but I know I'd be upset if I got a neutral with no chance to respond. I started to contact him and tell him (he has less than 100 feedback), but part of me feels like I am 'extorting' him if I ask for half my shipping back (or else he gets the neutral)...

So I ask... What Would You Do?

Thanks for your help,

Why neutral/negative if card isnt damaged?

Frankly i dont know why some of people here get so upset for PWE's, i could not care less if card arrives unharmed to me (and so far over the years not a single PWE card had any damages, cannot say same for bubblemailers)

Attleast for me getting some cheap paraller/etc in pwe isnt that bad if shipping charge is low.

How much is the postage on the envelope?

If I assume $1.22... then you could ding him SOME on shipping. A 1 or 2 isn't quite appropriate, IMO.

But you can't neutral or neg him... the card arrived as advertised.

For me.....a lot has to do with the card itself. If it is a base or low $ insert, then the PWE with no damage is no biggie. Jacked up shipping price would make me give a low rating on shipping cost. But if the card was undamaged, then a negative, or neutral isn't warranted.

Now if the card was a game-used/auto card...then they deserve the protection of a bubble envelope. If it came in PWE, combined with higher shipping charge, then a neutral or negative (only if card damaged) would be warranted.

So I guess a lot has to do with what type card is involved...in my opinion.

For clarification...

The card is an autograph with a book value of $30.

The postage on the envelope is two 57 cent stamps.

The neutral is maybe a bit much which is why I came here first, but it's hard to give a 'positive' and convey disappointment. It's not a high dollar card, but it is for my PC.

I just feel that $3 for a card in a top-loader (no team bag, but also no tape to hold the card into the top-loader) in a PWE is excessive. In principal, I have no problem with a PWE, if I'm charged appropriately. In my opinion, that amounts to - 1 cent penny sleeve, 3 cents top-loader, 2 cents envelope, 2 cents team bag, and $1.14 postage in this case - which means $1.50 would've covered it even if I'm off on the costs of supplies, $2, even, I probably wouldn't have let it get to me. $3 is too much, though. I hate ebay and fees as much as the next guy, but it's a choice to sell there - not a requirement.

In my opinion, if you care enough to spend the money on an item, plus shipping, and the seller doesn't advertise PWE, then you have the right to expect proper protetcion, including a bubble mailer. Some shippers also use cardboard to protect a properly sleeved, and top loaded card, which is perfectly acceptable, even in an unpadded envelope. But nothing more than a toploader in a PWE is not acceptable, even for base cards, unless it is agreed to by both parties, or is a stated term of the auction.

I'd leave positive, for no damage to the card, but 1 star for shipping, and note "card arrived as stated, but was shipped in PWE"

I hate when it happens, but I normally leave positive feedback and a 3 for shipping, as long as the card arrives undamaged. My mindset is life is too short to worry about it, especially when the $30 card arrived safely.

The seller took a chance that it would arrive safely in a PWE, knowing that if it didn't, he would end up having to refund you your money.

I had a seller do that to me and he was happy that I let him know that that was unacceptable. He even refunded my money for the shipping. He told me that he shipped lots of them in a PWE and now knows that it's not a good idea. Contact him and try to help them out instead of just nailing them to the wall. We are all quick to complain, but try to teach instead. I never knew the rules when I started and I had to learn along the way too.

The sell I dealt with asked another 10 questions or so just to learn how to do proper dealings. Some people care enough to try to learn as well.

I agree with Bidds55 I leave positive but in my comments I state that it was shipped in a PWE. and I ding on the stars. as far as the shipping cost how many times have you purchased a card and pain $4.00 S&H for a bubble envelope and it arrives that way but it only cost $2.00 to ship.

As much as PWE are hated on HI they're pretty popular on Ebay. No policy exists that the card can't be shipped in a PWE on ebay as far as I know. He did not say how he would be shipping the card in his description and 3.00 is not an excessive amount. You can break down the costs all you want but what about other factors such as time and fuel it costs to go to the post office? What about the portion of the shipping fee that is taken by paypal? If you were concerned about how the card would arrive you could of messaged the seller beforehand and asked how he would send it and then choose to make a decision to bid or not.

If the card arrived damaged you would be right to have a beef I would say. Just as you would if it arrived in a bubble mailer and was damaged though. I would hardly say though that you were gouged by any means and to me I would not make any issue out of this.

Like you said nobody is forcing him to sell on ebay.As for recouping your costs via inflated shipping, that is BS and ebay should do more to stop it.I appreciate when people leave neg or even neutral feedback for sellers who ship in PWEs so I can avoid them.Personally I would neg them for charging that much and shipping in that manner as well as a 1 on shipping cost.

I would say a 4-5 on shipping and a positive. The card arrived to you undamaged and in a timely fashion, so why would that warrant anything but a positive. $1.50 over the postage is not a completely unreasonable handling cost.

I really disagree on the neutral. REALLY disagree. That's abusing the feedback sytem, IMO.

The card arrived safely. The product is fine.

The beef is with the shipping cost, which I get. eBay put in these specific ratings for reasons like this one. Hit him with that rating ONLY.

And if I ship the card in a 1-touch, which costs about $1.50, with postage, etc, at $4 to ship, I'm LOSING money, and people STILL think 1 or 2 stars is acceptable too...

... many people in this hobby spend WAY too much time looking for stuff to complain about. The nickle and diming and all the kvetching that buyers do has reached a critical point.

I've reached a point where anyone who e-mails me to ask why I charge $4 for shipping in NA goes immediately to my blocked bidder list. The terms are there in black and white, and they're NOT negotiable. Live with it or move on to the next card.
