What's wrong with Alex Ovechkin

I think it's officially time to ask ourselves what is up with Ovy. He is now on pace to score 26 goals this season. I really thought that he would have a bounceback year but he's actually getting worse! Is he just not as interested anymore? Thoughts?
 
Who's Alex Ovechkin? Does he play hockey? I see a russian guy skating around doing nothing, is that him?

His physical conditioning is abysmal. Talent will only carry you so far in todays NHL. Now you have to be in top shape to compete. And he clearly isnt. He came back this season a shadow of the player he was last year physically. You can see his belly hanging over his belt in his tv commercials! Unless there's some extra curricular activity going on, it would seem he just doesnt care any more. Vladimir Krutov all over again......
 
Heard an interesting RUMOR through a friend who works at a radio station today that Hunter told Ovechkin to stop drinking... Which, if true, would explain a lot. Obviously there's no source to confirm this sort of thing but it's an interesting thing to consider... If that is what is going on with him it could really be affecting his attitude and performance.

One thing is for sure, something major has changed about Ovechkin's game and it seems to be affecting the entire team as a whole. Really baffling without any sort of explanation that the public is aware of.
 
Players and teams are figuring him out. Maybe a coaching and system change will benefit him and his linemates. He don't seem to have the same drive and intensity that he had. He is becoming a NHL fatcat. Big money and fame, he seems to enjoy the limelight and lifestyles of being a famous person. Its not the first time that North American influence has changed Russian players.

There may also be some truth to the above rumor about a potential drinking issue. I generally believe out of all major sports that hockey players are the most responsible when it comes to their lifestyles but I can't help but feel that Ovie may have gotten sucked into the party scene a bit harder than most. I hope it is not true, just saying if it was I wouldn't be surprised.

It figures the year I get him in my hockey pool is the year he starts to free fall :foottap:
 
He's always hated being 2nd best, so now he's decided to fall further down the ladder. Take the C off his sweater and I bet he turns it around.

Amen. When they put the C on him I said his play would degenerate. Players of his ilk/caliber or whatever you want to call it are not leaders and they cannot handle the pressure associated with being an NHL captain. Remove the C, put it on a guy that has that leadership quality and is very well respected (Brooks Laich for instance), and let him go back to focusing on what he is special at.
 
You want to see him turn it around, put some old Soviet Red Army coach in charge of the Olympic team and have a press conference that says he is not being picked to play for the team based on his recent performance.

I really can't see Dale Hunter and Ovy getting along at all... that's going to be all kinds of messy in about three weeks.

Apparently, Caps fans freaked out when they saw this. Even caused Ovy to respond, saying not to worry and that he will be ready for camp.

His conditionning levels are abysmal. Had he trained like, say, Steven Stamkos does he would be unstoppable.
 
Russian syndrome. This seems to happen to many star players from Russia when they enter the NHL. I'm wondering if the just can't adjust to the privileges that come with Western lifestyle.
