He is looking like a major bust. His 100 million dollar contract and he can't even control the puck in the shootout... just horrible
 
This is one of those occasional moments when I will actually defend Alex Ovechkin. He signed a monster deal and still plays his heart out every night. I didn't see that kind of passion from Kovalchuk before he signed with the Devils and I didn't expect it to change after he signed. Some players just take the big money and check out, seems like the case here (so far at least). I hope for the Devil's sake he picks up the production because he is putting a major strain on the team cap-wise.
 
#1 he's european - not a bad thing by any means on its own
#2 he signed a HUGE long term contract - again nothing wrong with this

Put the two together and you have flashes of a Yashin (In my opinion only).

I really hope I'm wrong, don't forget its very early in the season and Parise is out...we shall see how the next few seasons pan out though.....I don't hold out much hope though....FML I drafted him first round in my pool....STUPID STUPID STUPID....
 
He has a ton of pressure, that doesn't help. It doesn't help that the team is at the very bottom and struggles to win too.

All the team is struggling this season. We're not used to see this from them.

What he missed tonight though, very very bad ! I can't wait to see what he's gonna put up next game !
 
No, I had the 6th pick overall out of an 8 team league. I STOLE Stammer @ 6 and chose poorly coming back around with my 2nd pick Kovy
 
He started last year on pace for 19839483 goals, and is perfectly capable of scoring many more points this year.

Just not on this team.

This team needs to be rebuilt to match his style and speed. Parise is about the only one left who could compliment that skill.

The Shoot out mishap?? Just that. Should not be applied to anything other than bad break.
 
He played with some pretty bad linemates in Atlanta and was constantly a top goal scorer, except for the 2 50+ goal years, Hossa helped a bit there. Still, he was on pace to surpass 50 last season in Atlanta..
I know NJ is no longer the trap monster of the league, but just look at Kovalchuk's stats from last year:

Bad Atlanta team: 49 games, 31 goals
Division-winning NJ team: 27 games, 10 goals.

I know it takes time to get acclamated to a new team, but if you're a superstar, and you only put up 10 goals over a 3rd of a season, after putting up 3 times as many on a bad team for 2/3 of a season, it says something to me more about the system, or the way the coach is using you within the system. I really don't think it's him, I think that they picked the wrong type of player for the brand of hockey that they want to play.

That being said, how many people here think that the Penguins won't make the play-offs based on their season so far? To date, they are projected to finish 10th in the East, 5 points behind 8th NYR and 9th Atlanta. How about Chicago; they're on pace to finish 14th in the West, 15 points from the 8th spot. Let's wait until at least a third of the season until we pass judgement.

I think he needs a new stick... He seems to be having an awefully tough time catching passes clean this year. Doubt it is as simple as that, but might as well try it.
 
what you have is a player that has been pressing to live up to his contract on a team that is spinning it's wheels.

Kovy came out very well this year and had some solid games at the start, then the team hit the skids and the lines where broken up and injuries have taken disseminated the Devils.

First couple of games he was shifted to the right side with Zajac and Parise
then moved to the left side with Josefson and Clarkson
now on the left side with Zajac and Langenbrunner

Couple that with bad goaltending by Hedberg and you have an elite player in a very high profile skid.

The team is still only 5 points out of 8th, but they have allowed the second most goals against this year.

He looks like a guy that's gun shy. He needs one to go in so he can rebuild some confidence.
 
He looks disinterested. He always did well with Atlanta regardless of linemates. I think he has nothing to play for any more. He has his money. My vote is for Yashin part deux. If this carries on for the season what will they do with him?
 
Kovy should have just signed in La when he had the chance. He would still be insanley rich and be playing on a line with Kopitar and Brown.
 
The reality is this is not the Jersey roster everyone is used to. More than half of the current roster are 4th line/AHL material at best. The defensive core which used to be as good as any in the league is now a very below average group of players. Times have changed and with that went Jersey's successful system. They're now stuck in nowhere land and going to have a rough time coming out of the funk.

Kovy doesn't need to apologize for not being perfect.
