Hello!
Have been collection hockey cards for years and been a Beckett buyer for some time in my life...

But I have give up on Beckett, they are not a pricelist in my opinion any more and for sore they are not even a proper checklist!
So where could I find a proper checklist that are at least 98% correct!?
Working with my Pavel Bure collection and need to say every year they have missed some cards and also have some cards that not even exist or ever excited! And then we talking about the 90´s! Then we have the PC of Niclas Bergfors and Robert Nilsson that are from the 2005+ and there they have missed some and also added cards that never went to production!

So I world love to get better checklists of my PC!
Any one that have a register to recommend!? Please!

Thanks!

If you buy the yearly beckett, not the monthly, that has a pretty good list of players in sets. BUT as Beckett says in the foreword or somewheres in the book, it is not a complete list and they, as always, have relied on others to provide cards/sets/prices that they do not have or have correct. In other words, they rely on others for their information related to sets and prices...not always reliable information, even from the manufacturers.

There are better set lists out there, but unfortunately, I do not know where. the Hockey database, or Hockeydb, has a list of sets, but it is pretty incomplete without parallels. (This is where beckett has picked up most of the slack).
Some of the best player collections out there can be very eye opening to the casual or the avid collector. Some cards that you had never seen or rumored do tend to show in these collections. If you can find a few of these collectors that have their sets scanned that parallel Bure's career, you might find a few that you might not have on your list. (Pacific and UD did have some pretty impressive parallel sets back in hte 90's early 2000's. And some real avid collectors even collect cards from Wonderbread or Post, or whatever other promotional gimmicked products, Canada's McDonald's set is probably the most popular.)

Good luck and I hope you succeed in gaining a great source for your card list.

Steve

(BTW, I noticed your set on your webpage is missing the 93 Classic Auto of Bure. I am on this one also to complete the 93 Classic Autograph set. If you come across a few leads, please share. Only one I see on Ebay is $75, too much since I've seen a few in the last year sell for $20.)

I may have a Bure Auto extra... May need to cheek that out, add that to the long to do list!

My original Player list was pulled from Beckett back in 2006 (i think) since then I have maintained it myself with the help of Beckett (mostly for pricing even thou we all know they are out to lunch on most pricing), Upper Deck, Panini and ITG. From time to time I stroll through Ebay and see things that I have not found on any list so I just add them to mine. Id like to think that mine is 100% accurate but i know that realistically it never will be because of the inaccuracy or some of the lists and in particular from Upper Deck and Panini there are cards that are not made. You need a starting point and just work on it from there. The more resources that you pool from the better.

I'll speak on a couple items here

1> Beckett is the destination for mainstream sets, no question. The biggest spot I've seen lacking is in the show promotions and some of the regional series.

Back in the day, the Charlton was probably the best, but when Trajan divested itself of the CSC brand and magazine it also essentially killed the Charlton hockey card guide. As far as I know, by the way, they still own the license for it and if someone wanted they could pick it up as well as the archived CLs.

Here's where I can speak with some authority, as I worked on the Charlton for a couple years in checklist acquisition, it is damn, damn hard to try to get these all together. Looking in my own collection when I first started working on the book in '03 (the first of 2 or 3 years I inputted for Charlton) I probably found a dozen to two dozen products that were either mislisted or missing completely.

I only knew about these because of my extensive penchant for oddball products. As some of you may recall, I was working for years on having a sample from every card set ever produced (dropped this some time after the Lockout), and because of that I had a ridiculous amount of card knowledge in my back pocket. Still do to an extent.

Now rather than just ripping Beckett and slamming them for not having the most accurate checklists - let me ask ever collector this: What are you doing to rectify? Are you just sitting back *****ing or are you actually trying to help a resource? Are you the kind to just whine about the accuracy of Wikipedia or are you inclined to go in and fix errors?

Which brings me to point #2

2> Pricing. The formula we employed was based on a math of player hierarchy vs. perceived value of a product, initially based on pricepoint and then incoming based on dealer network feedback. (eBay wasn't quite as predominant as it is today and online marketplaces like COMC and Sportslots werent in existence or as popular).

Now this algorithm can be applied easily to products that exist within a retail sphere. it's easy, for example, to start pricing a common card from UD vs. SPA vs. The Cup, because of this stream.

Where it gets hard is first with regional or premium sets (say the Kraft or police cards of the world), then with regional premiums, and it's a lot harder today than it was back in the boom era. Hockey doesn't have as well defined 'superstars' and 'phenoms' as it once did - it's become more about following one team or one player than following the league (at least in my impression). Heck take a look at the boards - if this was 2000 there'd be more collectors pining for 'everything' than saying 'I just want Joe Thornton cards' or 'I'm a Red Wings collector'.

As a result, pricing is damn near impossible. you can't just assign values based on an algorithm because you become more dependent on that regionalized feedback, and if the network isn't cooperating - especially in a day where singles selling at hobby stores isn't as prevalent as it was in the pre-online market days (which are already junk-binning so you can't necessarily get accuracy) - then you're left with few options.

I do not care about a price guide, If i find a card that I may like I pay what I need to get it (if I have the money).

As for checklist I have sent several mail and try to help Beckett with the checklist on Robert Nilsson for years and also last 3 years with Niclas Bergfors!
But no response and no update, I may think I am the biggest collector of this two players in the world, consider that I have most of them and have been searching most of the internet for cards of the players!
Still Beckett does not listen to me, I world love to share my little knowledge about Bergfors and Nilsson and of corse with more then 2000+++ cards of Pavel Bure and a lot of cards in normal size of Bure that Beckett does not have and also I know that some of the Bure cards they have in the listning does not exist!

So I'm glad to help, and will always help with the little knowledge I may have...
But no one will listen to me!

Still I am looking for a better checklist for my Pavel Bure collection!

I have used a few different resources to come up with my own definitive checklist.

Beckett, SCF, hockeydb, the various card company websites, eBay..... all have contributed to me building my own complete checklist.

I also asked for information from other collectors of my pc player. HUGE HELP!!!

It took a bit of time....actually it took a lot. But the end result is one that I am extremely happy with.

If you want the definitive checklist of your player, I'd suggest investing the time so that you become THE source for having the best list.

Good luck.

Saras, who are you contacting there? I might have a better connection for you.

Hey,
I have just sent mail to the normal contact mail I found on the homesite, it´s some time ago and I did contact them several times but no luck or answer...

But if they like to listen I am glad to help, no one know more about Bergfors and Nillson then me at least... Even if they are low crap players in the hobby and game!

I don't know who answers that email address, but one of the guys who used to be in the price guide database side... I think Tim... is now with Panini.

Dan Hitt is involved with the guides in Football for sure, I believe baseball as well, don't know about hockey.

For now, best bet is the hockey editor, Susan. You can get her via Twitter at @yanxchick. I don't know if I can share her email addy here so i won't ;)
