Where would cards be without...........

Where would card collecting be without game used cards?????

I read alot about collectors hating them, because there are so many and so on, what do you think??--kj
 
I like them because it helps establish different branches of collecting but there are too many. I wish companies didn't include so many subsets. For example Mike Piazza probably has like 1,000 different variations of jersey cards.
 
we would have more base cards to possibly use for through the mail autographs or inperson autographs at the games or at the signing shows that they do and we would probably be trying to complete all insert sets and so forth.....
 
Packs would still be cheap. Inserts would have decent value. There would be still be 10-12 cards to a pack. People would still collect base cards and put together base sets...blah blah blah...

I really don't care for the 'game used scrap' cards. So, that makes it tougher on collectors like me who don't want to spend a premium on packs just to chase the base and inserts to get plenty of varied player cards for a particular team (ok, I do like the auto cards :o ) On the plus side I do get a good amount of base sent to me for (practically) nothing by the collectors who do chase the GU stuff...that's cool. :cool:

On the other hand, I would love the chance to pull a redemption for a game used jersey/stick/puck that was in one piece...so I guess personally, I just think it's lame how they went about it--cutting up all that great memorabilia, particularly the vintage stuff...

But, what ya gonna do???
 
game used cards will be the death of the hobby, now a days even plain jereseys are beeing snuffed, if its not limited to at least /100, autographed or a patch then its considered junk by most collectors, its so pathetic, i remember the days of the orig upper deck hockey jerseys which were (or still are) rarer than heck. i think its better limit products in general, limiting cases to like 5 or 10 20,000 cases of something like that instead of throwing out tens of thousands of cases in which maybe 10% of whats in it is what people are going for. maybe someone should do that, buy fleer and start limiting cases, making everything in the case collectable again. i dunno its just my rant it might not make sense
 
I think so, before there were so many gu'd around, an insert was considered cool, now its considered the 2nd to worst type of card you can get, if you know what i mean.
So, although I like the idea of gu, it's way too common.
 
The late 90's had the ideal sets. A big base set, perhaps one parallel set, 2 or 3 insert sets and a gu/auto set. Very balanced and the non-base cards were harder to pull making it more exciting when you did pull one not to mention it being more desirable. Back then you went nuts if you pulled a GU but now (if it's a common GU) you act like it's another base card... no excitement whatsoever.

Now they have 50-card base sets, 5 parallels sets, 8 insert sets and a couple auto & a couple GU'd sets per product.

If only we could go back to 1998 and tell the companies to keep those kind of sets and the collectors will be happier.
 
The Game Used or Event Worn Jersey cards should be a little bit more special. You know what I mean. Don't you feel cheated when you get one that is only white. I collect one player and feel like I should get at least one variant of that style. Low numbered, though. I have four cards of Sweet Spot "Sweet Swatches" Black jersey, black Mesh jersey, White jersey, and red jersey. I am now looking for red mesh, white mesh and maybe a multi color one. I just like the way they look. Okay enough rambling. I guess what I am saying is that it all depends on the collector. I do know that some game used cards can't be given away.
