So we all know that in the world of cardboard today, everybody gets a Rookie Card ... or 20. But HartMantha's post got me to thinking about players from the past that never got that honor and looking back it would have been cool to have a Rookie Card from their playing days.
MICHEL BRIERE --- had 44 points in his rookie season and was a promising prospect for the Pens in the early days of the franchise, who unfortunately was killed in an off-season car accident after his rookie year. Finally got a piece of cardboard in the 04-05 ITG Franchises Update set, but it just doesn't compare to having a true RC from back in the day.
GARY RISSLING --- one of the most memorable smiles in hockey ... ever. Like Briere he did get a little love with a card in the Fleer Throwbacks set long after his playing days were over. Hard to believe however that a guy who played in 184 games over 5 seasons - and racked up an amazing 832 PIMs wouldn't get a RC during his playing days.
DAVE MICHAYLUK --- the third leading all-time scorer in IHL history. Had a handful of games with the Flyers in the early 80s, but I remember him fondly for stepping in with the 91-92 Pens Stanley Cup winning team and playing 7 games in that season's playoffs (and even scoring a goal) when the team was hit hard with injuries. He never did appear in a regular season game with the Pens, nor did he ever get a RC.
DAN FRAWLEY -- a rough and tumble winger that played 240 games over 4 seasons with the Pens in the late 80s. Hard to believe that a guy that was basically a "regular" for that long would never get a RC.
TODD CHARLESWORTH and MITCH LAMOUREAUX --- two young guys that the Penguins hoped would become regular contributors on the mid-80s Penguins teams. Both played a fair amount but neither panned out and frankly are reasons why it took Mario so long to make the playoffs from the start of his career. Neither ever got a RC.
And one honorable mention:
MANON RHEAUME --- true she never played in a regular season game in the NHL, but her pre-season and minor league action back in the early 90s when all kinds of players were getting RCs tied to international tournaments would have been really cool.
So who are the players from your favorite team (or others) that never got a RC and you still wonder "why not"?
