which players do you not want Vegas to take from your team next season?

Ask me the same question at the end of the season when I see what Sabres actually perform at a level that makes me want to keep them.

Right now it's Ryan O'Reilly, Kyle Okposo, and Rasmus Ristolainen.

I believe Eichel, Reinhart, etc. would be protected automatically.

Anything can change in the season (trades, injuries, extensions, etc).
With that said, here are my predictions for those left unprotected on the Oilers NHL roster:

Forwards - Hendricks, Kassian (RAF), Letestu, Maroon, Pitlick (RFA)
Defense - Fayne

I've excluded the players with 2 seasons or less and UFA's, so I think I can sleep well at night, though I'd hate to lose Kassian (possible extension), Letestu, or Maroon.

I didn't see this in the rules - will have to go through the NHL rules when I get a moment but are the players that are "exposed" those that are on the big club roster or any player that is under contract/protection by the club?

So for the Canucks will they have to protect Thatcher Demko (assuming he is not on the end of the year roster) or would he automatically be protected.

EDIT: Regardless of how that rule falls, I am sure there are going to be some loopholes that teams will attempt to utilize when going through this process. I really wonder what that will look like as we get closer.

Joe - Demko will not be exposed. He is on an EL contract, and those players are not eligible for the expansion draft.

Can someone please put the rules for protection in this thread, in plain English, so we can determine who has to be protected and who doesn't?

For example, I know NMCs have to be, but I read that NTCs do not have to be. I've read RFAs have to be, but not if they don't have a contract. So much information that it would be nice to have a point-form rules list.

Here are the rules as linked from the article to the NHL.com page.

With the NHL awarding a franchise to Las Vegas at the Board of Governors Meeting on Wednesday, an expansion draft will take place after next season.

Las Vegas will be the eighth team in the Pacific Division and the 15th team in the Western Conference. The NHL has 16 teams in the Eastern Conference.

The following rules were approved for the 2017 Expansion Draft:

Protected Lists
* Clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the Expansion Draft:

a) Seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender

b) Eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender

* All players who have currently effective and continuing "No Movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

Player Exposure Requirements
* All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft:

i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.

ii) Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.

iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club's player exposure requirements, unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection by the League.

Regulations Relating to Expansion Franchise
* The Las Vegas franchise must select one player from each presently existing club for a total of 30 players (not including additional players who may be acquired as the result of violations of the Expansion Draft rules).

* The Las Vegas franchise must select the following number of players at each position: 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.

* The Las Vegas franchise must select a minimum of 20 players who are under contract for the 2017-18 season.

* The Las Vegas franchise must select players with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100% of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap.

* The Las Vegas franchise may not buy out any of the players selected in the Expansion Draft earlier than the summer following its first season.

The 30 NHL Clubs must submit their Protection List by 5:00 P.M. ET on Saturday, June 17, 2017. The Las Vegas team must submit their Expansion Draft Selections by 5:00 P.M. ET on June 20 and the announcement of their selections will be released on made on June 21.

* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

It would appear that a guy like Demko would be protected by this clause and not counted toward their protections.

So, the next example is for a guy like Jake Virtanen. Should he end the year in the minors and not on the Canucks NHL roster, would he need to be protected? If I am not mistaken, this is his third professional season.

Guessing LV does not take anyone that's a UFA, which means Desharnais isn't getting picked up via expansion.

Emelin is the obvious candidate (was not listed as a no-trade guy on Gen Fanager) but I could see Danault, Carr, Andrighetto, or Byron getting picked up if LV has already picked up some big contracts. No way Montreal protects all 4 of those guys and LV will need depth/role forwards with some potential.

Dark Horse Pick: Pateryn

Darker Horse pick: Pleks gets exposed but doesn't get plucked.

Should also say we're gonna see a lot of musical chairs prior to the expansion draft. This trade deadline's probably going to be a fun one as well. Gonna be a lot of GM's begging guys to waive NMC's
