Browsing the bay, I found some ridiculous (at least to me) prices on a good number of Jason Spezza pieces. Granted, they're redemptions from 06/07 that are finally showing up, but still pretty high.

That got me thinking: which player(s) has the most rabid and competitive collectors?

I'm sure we'll hear from the Gabby Mafia a few times :)

The big guys......Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Roy.....all have a vast number of collectors who go after their stuff. But I'd say the Joe Sakic or Maurice Richard collectors are amongst the most crazed when it comes to aggressive pursuits of their cards......

In my experience, Messier and Orr collectors have some deep pockets with some big holes burnt in the bottoms of them, lol.

In terms of players, I think Gaborik has to be up there, although his "lower body injury" may have curtailed that somewhat.

Im also going to throw in Probert, I have learnt (to my cost) that some of his GU cards go way higher than Beck**t BV's and it seems he still has a strong following, nothing like Gretzky, Lemieux (Erm Mario, not Claude...) or Bobby Orr or any where near but it is still suprising.

From similar discussions Ive seen on the subject, Montreal Canadiens fans always rank pretty high up. Not for particular players per se, but just collect their team.

I'm flattered that I've been mentioned, but Sakic collectors don't hold a candle to the Gabby Mafia, the Lecavalier Brigade (now defunct), Mickey D's collectors, and the Sidiots.

That said, we'd be remiss if we didn't give the Ovechkin chasers honorable mention. Quite honestly, I bow to Lee as the Grand Master of Obsessive Collectors. :D

Hello.

Koivu and Selanne folk....please step forward and take a bow ;)

Cheers,

Sergie Kostitsyn fans... you don't see any of his good stuff anywhere! Seriously though, Patrick Roy has some pretty crazy collectors. almost as crazy as he is!

It's true, we are a little on the goofy side sometimes. Vinny Lecavalier cards get a boost every time that there's a rumour he'll be traded to Montreal. Guys that would be commons if they were with any other team get listed because they wear the Holy Flannel. To say nothing of kids that will chase Carey Price's truck down the road in the hopes of grabbing an autograph.

Sandis Ozolinsh. I am not kidding. If you ever stumble across a rare or unique card of his, watch out.

I think you can extend that to just about any established Latvian that has had a decent career in the NHL - particularly Arturs Irbe. I have seen some amazing prices for his stuff, particularly lower numbered parallels and inserts.

I remember being in a store in Edmonton when some gentleman who was visiting for the World Masters Games a few years ago was travelling by bus from shop to shop picking up all cards of players from the Baltics to take back with him to Latvia. He was saying that the common cards he picked up here - he could flip them for at least triple what he paid for them.

Echo'ed Ovechkin chasers will all ways have a fight on their hands there. I have to mention extreme set collectors even though you asked for player collectors

Counting dollars it's probably, Gretzky, Roy or Crosby but percantage well I know a swedish guy with over 100% Nylander cards (not inc 1/1s), don't know how that's possible though

Is it possible that he also collects show promo and odd-ball items(s). Some of which may not be on the "official" player checklist? Just a thought.

Cheers,
