Why always dual shields?

Now I am not complaining so lets not start that "I hate people who only complain thing" again.

Just curious as why UD thinks that in the Cup there should always be dual shield cards? As a player collector I would love a shot at a Miikka Kiprusoff shield card, but being he is paired up with Iginla that will make it unfordable. His other pairings Lehtonen, and Luongo are just plain unappealing. What makes Upper Deck think Flames fans want Canucks, or in other pairings (Tanguay/Hemsky) Oilers players on their cards? Or vise versa? Its just too bad he wasn't included in other sets like Ultimate where I could get a plain old shield alone, without a buddy.

Like I said not that I am complaining, two shields is better than one, just thinking sometimes keeping it simple works also.

I agree, it is a bit redundant. Changing things up could work quite well, I have one question though. Why are Luongo and Lehonen unappealing?

I agree with you wholeheartedly - some of the pairing make no sense at all either and, as you mentioned, why would they put players from rival teams on the same card (Luongo and Kipper). I am sure there is a segment of people that like the idea but I am sure the overwhelming majority thinks its rediculous.

I am not a fan of the Dual Shield - just get them auto'd and move along already - or go shield plus sweet patch from the same player if you want two GU pieces in the card.

Mostly I am a die hard Flames collector. Luongo, being from the hated Canucks is just something I cannot live with :P. Lehtonen is alright I will probably seek this card most of the three, just why can they not pair it with a Flames player like Regehr, or something? I just wish the pairings meant more than they are both from the same country, or division. Even Khabibulin/Kiprusoff has more meaning. If that makes sense.

VP - I agree and that is cool, however there has never been a Kiprusoff solo shield in any product that I have been aware of to date :P I am dying for one.

Is he in the auto or non-auto dual shields in The Cup. The reason he might miss the cut in Ultimate is they're all signed. His omission could be due to his refusal to sign, his asking for too much money, or his continued delay in returning signed cards to UD. Maybe UD might pick another brand to try non-auto'd solo shields like they did in Premier back in 02-03. Then we'd see guys like Sakic, Forsberg, Kipper and others with single shields...

Yeah he doesn't sign anymore. It seems he has a few stickers floating around, and signs for BAP, but not for anything else.

Like I said its cool that at least they include him, just unfortunate that I can't get a sheild of his solo, or with an affordable pairing that makes a bit more sense.

Yes I am too picky :D

I'm sort of on your boat here Byron...I still don't know what link Cammalleri and Horton have to put them on a dual shield together outside of the possible "Uh, we have these 2 shields left...what should we do with them?" escape.

Cammy has shields? Ohhh I better keep an eye out, ha ha just kidding. FYI as soon as he gets some Flames cards I am sending them to you ha ha.

I better be quiet before Boyd, Phaneuf, Iginla, or Kipper gets traded to Vancouver lol.

I'll suggest it to the new brand manager at the National. That might be something they could add to Ultimate next year.

That would be cool, you cannot tell me non signers such as Sakic, Forsberg, Shanahan, Kiprusoff, Sundin, Alfredsson, Jagr, etc. wouldn't sell.

Some pairs work well (Ex: Crosby/Ovechkin) but as a Gaborik collector and as much as I'd like to have a shield card I don't see much appeal in a Gabby/Kalus shield. Pair him with a countryman superstar like Hossa or something and you have something big but why Kalus??

Yeah they're teammates, but Kalus is kind of a little-known rookie to be paired with the star player. Gabby/Koivu would be a better pair, IMO.

Rookie pairs are a great idea, imagine how much some of the duals this year will sell for, with Kane/Toews, Kane/Price, and other similar combos!

Thanks VP for the wicked good news. Oddly I would pay just as much or more for a Kiprusoff shield on its own vs a Kiprusoff/Lehtonen dual. No offense to Lehtonen, sometimes I just want 1 player 1 card.

Also some matchings are ok, but why wastes the ultra high end and pair Heatley with Iginla? What is their connection? Even the Iginla/Nash, Iginla/St.Louis or Lecavalier Iginla/Kovalchuk pairings are tired. Maybe I am way too picky lol, but I would have rather seen the Owen Nolan/Iginla pairing instead of the Tanguay/Nolan pairing.

Owen Nolan...in a high end product...please tell me that NEVER happens

There is a Nolan/Tanguay shield pairing. As a Flames fan I can respect him as he was a great of the game. I felt honored when he played for Calgary, and he played his butt off. I would have liked to seen him paired with Iginla on a shield card, but alas Nolan drew Tangs. I would also like a Gelinas or Conroy/Iginla pairing.

Yeah Iginla always gets paired with the same people, gets pretty blah after a while.

Can I make a shield suggestion? How about cutting them into two or four pieces, then putting two or four players on the card with each player contributing 1/2 or 1/4 of the full shield? Each would be a 1/1, but there would be two or four similar cards since you'd have to rearrange the pictures to go with the shields.
