Why do you collect who you collect?

Well firstly I started collecting Capitals that I like because my dad use to take me to games as a kid, and being a black kid hockey was not really the sports most kids in my neighborhood knew about, let alone watch or play. But once I went to the game at the Cap center in Landover, I was a fan. My favorite Caps player of all time is Peter Bondra (Bonzai as Craig Laughlin so aptly called him) but I got started too late to really get a lot of his stuff, so I began collecting my favorite Caps of today (Ovie, Backstrom, Orlov, Kuzy, etc.) I try to grab what I like of them and if I can find some older players like Bondra, Kolzig, Oates, or the Secretary of Defense Rod Langway I try to snatch them up.

Then as far as Wayne Simmonds and Seth Jones goes, being that black players aren't as prevalent in the NHL, and being black myself. I decided I would collect one of them. I loved Iggy but again I was late to the show and some of his earlier stuff was long gone or entrenched in someone's PC already. I saw a Kings game and Wayne Simmonds tenacity caught my attention, and I started following Simmonds. His play style reminded me a bit of Iggy (speaking of this if anyone has or has seen the 10-11 Simmonds/Iggy SOTT let me know), so I jumped head first into collecting everything I could. I've amassed one of the better Simmonds PC's I believe. I began collecting Seth Jones because he had the potential to be the #1 pick in his draft and be the highest black American player ever drafted in the NHL, so now I currently am closing in on 200 different cards of his. And soon whenever Madison Bowey debuts with my Caps I will be chasing everything of his as well.

Patrick Roy because he was a childhood idol growing up in the late 80's early 90's and being a goalie myself back in the day. His off ice stuff not so good but on the ice he was unreal to watch and follow. Always entertaining and there is no shortage of stuff of his to collect. I have moved away from all of the auto and game used "stuff" and have been really enjoying collecting just base/inserts/parallels.

Great stories, wish mine was better but it was just basically time and position.

I got into collecting Carey Price in his rookie year because I'm a Habs fan and we have something of a lineage when it comes to great goalies. I knew he was going to be something special from the get-go coming off his World Junior Championship and Calder Cup MVP. And a BC boy at that! The Canadiens had a preseason game in Halifax in September 2007 and I remember after the game ended he was the first guy out the door to the bus. There was a rush of people and I didn't get an autograph at the time, but I remember wishing him good luck and "I hope you make the team." He said thanks, he made the team, and he went on to a pretty solid rookie season. He's been pretty good ever since, you might say. It's pretty cool that he's reached his potential and become the best goalie on the planet today, and I've been on that bandwagon pretty much since day one of his career. LOL Jaro Halak.

Lundqvist - because he's my favorite player on my favorite team.
Eichel - American-born and one of the best to ever wear a BU Terriers jersey, however short his time with the team was.

I am collecting Geoff Sanderson becouse he is greatest scorer ever. One year 99-00 he score over 550 goals. What?? I was playing too much EA:s NHL 2000:) My 1st line was Sanderson-S.Koivu- Sergei Berezin.

Atlanta thrashers won Stanley cup then...

Chris Osgood is my cousin; his dad and my mom are brother and sister.

I started collecting with another cousin in 1990 when Chris got his first card in 7th Inning Sketch. We just thought it was cool that our cousin had a hockey card. Then the next year another, and so on. By the time he got NHL cards it was too late -- the OCD had kicked in! Lol

I actually thought about beginning to collect cards of my supervisor who used to be a NHLer for Bruins and Kings, but then I thought that it would be awkward if he would find out :D

This is so cool! :D

Matt Murray, because he's Ken Dryden.

Though the fact he backstopped the Penguins to a Stanley Cup before most of his rookie cards came out is making him an expensive prospect.

Hopefully this turns out better than my short-lived Steve Mason collection.

Was a huge Bure collector back in his time with the Canucks... after my entire PC got stolen I wasn't really sure if I'd ever get back into the hobby. Then one day I'm scouring the daily sports news, and see Brian Burke did some wheeling and dealing to draft these two Swedish twins with the 2nd and 3rd picks - right around the same time ebay was starting to grow, I found myself wondering, do they already have rookie cards like the World Junior cards UD used to make?

Well sure enough they did in Black Diamond, and seeing as those were their only rookie cards I thought I'd stock up on a ton as an "investment". I finally moved the all but the quad diamond dups this year as I don't think they're ever going to put my soon-to-be-born kid through college, but the rest of my collection has only grown since then. I'm now into the 20th hockey card season, with over 3,000 mainstream Sedin cards in the PC - not to mention hundreds of promos, oddballs, printing plates, etc.

I've got to say I feel fortunate, it's pretty hard to predict whether highly-touted prospects will even pan out, let alone stick with the team for most (all?) of their career, win Hart, Ross, and Lindsay trophies, and own all the major records in the team record book, not to mention great guys in the community as well.

Of course in recent years I've also taken to some rather OCD set collecting as well, but that's a story for another thread.

I vote this is the winner. Can't really beat a cousin in the NHL, other than a sibling or yourself in the NHL.
