'K, don't want to come off overly terse about it, because in fairness, UD Customer Service has in reality been pretty good to me over the years. But this really frosts my cake. About 2 weeks ago, another trader to whom I offered my 05 Triple Espo/Hall/Cheevers /25 (it was pending redemption) in trade, replied he already had one - he'd bought it on the 'bay. I asked if he'd be kind enough to scan it for me and he did.

Mine read "Be Patient, Athlete Committed to Signing Soon" on the UD Redemption site - as it has since 2/6/05. I called UD Customer Service and the redemption manager called me back when I was on travel. After I explained my concerns about getting the redmption I'd pulled, he assured me the cards were not back, and that I'd absolutely get my $350 card. Got stoked when I saw it had been packed out on Monday. Got ticked when I came home tonight, opened the bubble and read UD's version of a Dear John letter, i.e., "Sorry, we depleted our stock."

Replacements? Yup. Complete dogs - well, not really, if I were MIKE and liked Rangers. Bottom line is 4 cards with less overall BV and less trading power, for a triple featuring a Bruin.

Stay tuned for the end of the story, because I'm going to follow up to see what (if anything) UD'll do to make this right. Sorry for the length and thanks for letting me purge!!!

Hopefully you can sell them for more than what the triple would garner, but the point is you wanted the triple auto and not that stuff. Nice redemptions in themselves though.

Hope you can get it settled.

I've had another inquiry as well, but even though when UD tries to make things like this up to its customers by sending something else without asking for what they sent back, I've already left Chris Carlin a VM and an email telling him I'm happy to send these back for something I really want. I'm not looking to beat them up - I just want a comparable high end Bruins card!

I'll keep you posted as to what transpires. If I get to keep 'em, I'll be looking to trade versus sell. Thanks for your post.
 
It's too bad you didn't at least grab something you collect or 1 nice comparable card in exchange. :(
On the bright side those Gretzky's are pretty tough if I remember correctly and would probably fetch a pretty penny on the bay..
 
That's terrible - I think the big problem here is how in the heck is it that UD can't honor a redemption /25??? How can they be out of stock? Geez, even I know when you run out of toes and fingers to count, use a friends hands... man!

This is the reason redemptions are receiving such a stigma from the collecting community. This is why a redemption card will at times sell for as much as 50% less than a redeemed card. UD is shooting traders and dealers in the foot by continuing their haphazard redemption process.

Dave, I hope you get it figured out to your satisfaction - if it was me, I wouldn't be satisfied until I had that triple in my hands.

Dave - that is pretty crappy, but what they sent you is not complete garbage.
Actually the selling value of what they gave you is higher than the selling value of the triple.
But the concept is wrong!!!!!
Tell them you want a triple auto and that here is a list of acceptable players (grin).

Hey, the selling value is only what someone actually pays and I started off by saying I knew they didn't send me complete garbage, Bruce - but you're also right when you say that misses the point. All I know is I pulled a card that had a triple autograph featuring a player from the team I collect, in the era that I began watching hockey - and now I have 4 cards - two single autos and two GU - one of which books at $20 and none of which are anything I specifically collect. Gretzky? Hey, great. Everyone likes him, including me. But cards out of 200, 999 and who-knows-what aren't nearly the same thing as one out of 25.

Meh... I guess that's why collecting's so subjective. But for the guys/gals who think it's too bad I'm disappointed, if you'd taken the steps I took a couple of weeks ago to try and avoid exactly this from happening, I doubt you'd disagree - especially if you spent what I regrettably spend feeding the beast and busting boxes.

That's Classic UD for you!!! At least you got a Messier and Gretzky along with a good rc auto, and not a FREAKIN CUJO auto! UD is the best company in the world! Good luck and I hope you get what you deserve!

Lionel - I don't know the guy and I certainly don't condone what UD sent to you as replacements... but that's a pretty poor assumption if you ask me. No need to bring racism into this debacle. Just my $0.02 worth.

Jay- You didn't go through what I had to and you didn't get the treatment I did over the phone and email. Sorry to burst your bubble but these things happen in the world we live in and I deal with it once in a while so my "assumptions" (according to you) come from experience and sometimes you just get that feeling and I am merely stating my points.. Jay- My bad, must be all that estrogen hormone in body making me all "prissy".. Must be bc my GF is in China on vacation for a month and I am all "alone" :) Seriously I agree my statement is a bit inflammatory and harsh, I must've caught "Brett Hull Syndrome" (Foot in Mouth) while working at the Pharmacy tonight.. That's a shame, BUT it coulda beena lot worse... could have been a Joseph Trilogy auto in there instead lol

I think you are a great guy will many valid points, but I am gonna have to side with Jay here. That is a pretty big Leap. I Have seen others get screwed over by UD with replacements, many of them with very anglo names. Also, I have seen others get awesome replacements, heck, check out what Aaron Lo got from Carlin a few days ago (certainly not an Anglo name). A very nice and ample parting gift in place of a Ryan Malone RC Jersey.
If there truly is some proof of this, I would be very intersted to hear of it, and it should definately not go unnoticed, but an isolated incident does not warrant this talk IMO.

My 2 cents, Canadian Funds.

Perhaps you and Jay are right, maybe my anger towards UD has made me a Jaded monster..Perhaps the cold/unfriendly treatment is what everyone gets and maybe I am just looking into it more than what is.. Whatever the case perhaps it is just frustration, this whole incident has left a bad taste in my mouth and has made me think about if I truly want to keep collecting.. Sorry if I offended anyone and I will delete my post..

UD is brutal, I have 2 letters that I sent them in the past 2 months, about ethical practices, including at the toronto expo and Replacement stories...I doubt they will ever change.
I dont think you offended any one :D. Me and Jay were simply pointing out that UD has terrible CS, and they are bad to everyone ;) and sometimes good to those who complain, Passing out crappy replacements to all walks of life.
