They went all last season without a captain and it looks like they will start this season without one.:|

What is up with that?

Why name one if there is no clear undisputed leader on the entire team? Is there anyone on that team currently that is capable of handling the pressure that comes with being the face of the team?

I would hold off on naming one until there is a clear captain.

Everyone says that Schenn will be the next captain but I don't see that happening for another 3 years or so.

I think part of it too is that being the captain of Tampa Bay or Atlanta is very different than being the captain of Toronto. There is more legacy behind the C in Toronto and I like that it is not given out to whom ever is the big player of the season. Wait until there is a player that deserves the honour.

I don't see why Matt Stajan hasn't recieved it already. He is one of the best leaders and role model's in the league.

James

Stajan is a good call, if I remember correctly he is either #2 or #3 for games played as a Leaf on the current roster, think Kaberle is #1 but who knows how long he will be around for.

Stajan probably won't be back next season with the Leafs and I think most people realize that. No point giving him the C for just a season. Schenn will be the next captain but it probably won't happen till next season at the earliest

Why name one just for the sake of naming one?

Doesn't make any sense to me. Let one emerge.

They have named 3 alternates: Komisarek, Beauchemin and Kaberle. Seems reasonable enough. No sense force feeding someone/something that isn't quite ready yet.

Guess Burkie and Wilson want to see how the team will unfold this season. Their new policy on performing" night in and night out and you will play" really doesn't give any stability for a captain at the moment.

Although Stajan is a good player,he's got alot to prove in order to be Leafs captain and all that comes with it. He is not there yet to be named with all the leafs greats

what's the rush? we're in the "rebuilding" phase...captaincy will come eventually with the right candidate.

from the star

Newcomers Mike Komisarek and Francois Beauchemin however will join Tomas Kaberle as three alternate captains.

Wilson has resisted naming a captain since Mats Sundin left the team as a free agent over a year ago, but said he could see one of the three defencemen being named captain eventually, with the issue being revisited in a month.

"Those players all have (leadership) qualities," said Wilson as the team wrapped up its three-day retreat in Huntsville, Ont.. "They have three different personalities."

The coach also confirmed Tyler Bozak and Jiri Tlusty would be sent to the AHL Marlies.

I don't see how people can say that Stajan isn't ready or doesn't have what it takes to be captain. He is the Leafs NHLPA rep, a great role model for kids, Toronto boy, isn't affaid to speak to the media, is very vocial in the dressing room, is always visiting kids at Sick Kids or visiting schools on his own time, plus he is also a decent forward.

I think it goes against protocol for you to "nominate" the player you collect. :)

I think it speaks for the type of team the leafs are. I know if I was on the team I would be saying "wtf" at the situation the team is in, and the captaincy is in. It would make me want to try harder, and be the leader the team needed. The management wants someone to step forward and take command, and no one has yet.

Then again, they had Sundin for how many years? There was never any need for them to look for someone else. Heres a quote my hockey coach told me when I was younger, "captains dont grow on trees, they grow below them". It takes the weight of a "failing" franchise to stand up and carry the team emotionally. Anyone can be a "good" captain on a team that always wins.

I am taking a non-bias view of this by the way. If management is looking for someone to set up then they will be waiting for ever because what Stajan does for the organization is close to, or on par with what the top captians in the league are doing. If I had as much information on other captians as I do on Matt, I would make a more informed guess.

James

I think that Stajan deserves a shot.... I could see them looking at Schenn but I think that Stajan would be a better choice right now.

...and that's exactly the point. Why pick one from this motley crew to carry the captaincy? Stajan might be the best choice right now, but in the long list of great captains the Leafs have had, his name would rank right below Rob Ramage.

Wait until one emerges. Don't give someone the captaincy "just because". If he's being considered for the captaincy, why haven't they made him an alternate? Stajan is hardly a long term Maple Leaf, never mind a long term captain.

The logical choice for the next Leafs captain is Schenn, but there is no need to give it to him right now.

Stajan is a good player, but I don't get the impression that either Burke or Wilson really like or trust him.

Also, if Schenn is the next captain - its hard to name a captain for two years, and then take the 'C' away at that time.

Schenn wasn't even the captain of the Rockets when he played in the WHL. Also can someone explain how a captain is supposed to emerge?

James

That's because he went to the NHL as an 18-year old. The Rockets didn't name a captain that season until it was clear he wasn't coming back.

Captains emerge when they pummel a guy for bumping your rookie goalie. Captains emerge when they surprise everyone and force their way on the team. I realize Stajan is your favorite player, but on most teams in the NHL, he's a borderline second liner, and he doesn't exactly lay it on the line.

The fact that the Leafs gave 'A's to two guys who joined the team just this summer speaks volumes about what management thinks about the other Leaf vets.
