Why would Upper Deck do this??

Maybe the top part of the letters had been cut off when making other cards, and its the only way it would fit........

I know Wings letters don't fit too good. I have a feeling they use an automated jersey shredder. It probably came from a jersey before they did BTL and they scavenged it up.

This was my thought as well. I would have just used the jersey up for patches and not tried to do BTL cards off this particular jersey.

Some of the nameplate letters on especially older jerseys were huge back then.....they have no control over that.....but they do have the control over making a card that doesn't
Quite make sense............the past has proven........they dont care, they would rather someone be happy to pull such an awesome card with such a disappointing swatch

While having the full letter on the card would be nice, I much prefer the idea of these with photos of the players on the cards.

Last year's Letters of Distinction were better. They fit nearly the entire Captain and Alternate Captain patches in the window:

This year they sacrificed space for the patch to include a picture of the player. And some of the Captain letters on the jerseys are just too big for cards no matter how big the window. If you look at this year's the window size is almost the same. The problem is the C on the Flyers black jersey is bigger than the C from their alternate jersey:

I do agree that the Kariya could have been done better. But they could have been miscut to begin with and instead of scrapping the cards, they decided to make it anyways and give Kariya fans something to chase. He doesn't have a lot of cards this year, so why not?

I'd prefer the whole letter also, but I like seeing the player on the card too. So it doesn't really matter that much to me. And should it matter? It's still an amazing card. People that want to nitpick at 1/1 patches like these might not be in this hobby for the right reasons. Just enjoy them...or go find a card you do enjoy instead of trying to overly critique cards you neither want or own.

You bring up some great points, IMO though having the entire letter is more important to me than having a pic of the player on the card

Standard size letters for name bars on the back are 3" high. Generally - the Captains letters are 4" high - which are too large to fit onto a standard 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" card.

Once you start bringing in twists such as radial arching, multiple layers of colours and certain fonts that are specific to some teams, the size of the letters can vary greatly, making it tough to fit an entire letter onto a card. Not blaming anyone here, but just stating facts.

Say there was a Calgary jersey that was being cut up with an Assistant's A on it, the whole letter will definitely not fit onto a card, since they use the old Atlanta logo for it - It's just too wide to fit on a card by itself.
