Marian Gaborik's days as a member of the Minnesota Wild could be ending sooner than later.

An unnamed NHL team executive told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune this week that Wild general manager Doug Risebrough has been actively shopping the star forward around the league and offered Gaborik to his team in a trade over the weekend.

According to the paper, the executive said he was not interested.

Gaborik is expected to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The 26-year-old is the team's all-time leading scorer with with 207 goals and 415 points in 487 games and has hit the 30-goal mark five times in seven seasons.

Last season, Gaborik had a franchise-record 42 goals and 83 points. While the Slovakian forward maintains that he wants to stay in Minnesota, he and agent Ron Salcer have reportedly rejected multiple contract extension offers.

Gaborik, who has a history of abdominal and leg injuries, has missed the past two games because of a lower body injury.

The young forward, who will make $7.5 million this season, could be tough to move this early in the campaign with most NHL teams already close to the $56.7 million salary cap.

Files from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune were used for this report.

LA in the future? How low is NYR payroll? TO perhaps? Gabby wants a HUGE payday and who is going to afford him?

Sad to see the face of the franchise being shopped, but if Minny is smart they could turn Gaborik into some exceptional young players and draft picks.

Agreed.

It's unfortunate, as Gabby was on track to become their beloved old goat as time marched on. I just hope he doesn't become another Pavol Demitra.

According to the Wild the face of the franchise is Mikko. I don't know if Wild fans agree witht hat but that's the way upstairs wants to market the team. I really hope RDS is wrong...

I dont see why any team would shell out top players or prospect for a rent-a-player thats going to test the market unlees he has a 10 year/100 million deal.

If he was so great , he would be the team captain, maybe a great player, but not so much a great team player.

Whit is strike and everything, i see a Yashin remake once the big contact is signed.

RDS is more a dirt site than an actual paragon of legitimate sporting news. They publish every rumour as if it were legit news. I think they also reported on the Tom Fritsche fiasco from a couple years back.

Gabby's a great player and I like him, but he's grossly overpaid as is. He should prove himself to be a point per game player over the course of more than one season before asking for Crosby-type money.

I hope that free agency brings him and his agent down to earth. He doesn't command the money that he's already making. Nevermind what he's asking for.

Marian gaborik is one of the most talented players in the game today, but in the salary cap world, he's too expensive for many teams, which will diminish his market value. I think Staal for gabby straight up, with conditional 1,2 &3 round picks for re-signing would be about right but I don't know if the pens have room for him under the cap.

LOL the message board rumour where supposedly Dan Fritsche's brother leaked some info... ahh I wish I remember the specifics about that one. It was really intense for a while in Montreal. It was right after the lockout ended.

Ya, RDS has become more and more of a gossip mill than an actual sports outlet. Then again, so has TSN with Dreger and McKenzie since a couple seasons ago.

As for Gaborik, a lot of talk has him coming to Montreal. No offense to Gaborik fans, but I do not want Gaborik on my team... not if it means Higgins and McDonagh or anyone else. He's a fine player, but the #1 scoring team last season that added Alex Tanguay and Robert Lang over the summer doesn't need to add more offense.

All the Higgins talk is getting a bit ridiculous. Last season it was Higgins for Hossa. Now it's Higgins for Gaborik. The guy is a leader and a future captain. Pass on Gaborik and the 10-12 extra goals he will bring if he replaces Higgy.

Another thing, Mike Russo of the Star Tribune reported a couple days ago that Gaborik was looking for a similar deal to the 10year contract the Wild offered him but closer to $10M than 8.

That is absurd!! There are only 2 players in the league worth that kind of money, and a guy that can't keep himself out of the press box is not one of them

Just out of curiosity, when he gets traded (or signs elsewhere) how many Gaborik collections go up in smoke? Or will they be continuing?

In this day and age of sports, I've never understood why a player collection would go up in smoke when you pretty much need to expect that a player will play for more than one team in his career.

Exactly. Being a fan of a player on your favourite team is one thing. Being a fan of the actual player is totally different.

Most people are the former and will bail on the player when they leave town

A lot of the player collectors are fans of the team where that player plays. Look at how tough Thornton cards are to move now compared to when he was a Bruin.
