Need to make the decision whether or not to travel to Toronto for the May 1, 2, 3 show. I have attended the November show a couple of times and was wondering if anyone can provide me with a few comparisons?

Is it worth the trip from Halifax?
Is there normally good deals on wax boxes?
Is there anything special happening to make the trip memorable?
Are there many Hobby Insiders going?

My experience on the macro level suggests the Fall show is better. The Spring is still good, but not typically as electric (probably tied more to product releases than anything). If you are into contests/redemtpions/etc I believe UD is taking a pass on the Spring Show (I could be wrong) so ITG will be the only major player there, meaning their booth will be jammed (which of course is good for ITG :) )

If I had that far to travel, I would wait for the Fall show.

my 2 cents.

That's too bad on the UD thing(if true). A few of us are flying from the rock and have attended both fall and Spring expos in the past. Both shows are worth going. You get to talk and look at cardboard as well as meet some fine people in the HI community. There's always good selection(wax and singles) brought in on the tables. You never know what is going to pop up!!!!!!

Hope to see you there

Hey Cyril,

I've gone three times to the Spring Expo, and it's always a good time. The wax usually tends to be pretty reasonably priced for the most part. Personally, I like the Spring Expo, because most of the year's releases are out for hockey so you get a room full of the newest stuff.

I like them both, and honestly didn't see a big difference between the two shows. The spring show last year had MAJOR buzz because of Superlative being released... if the rumour is true that another Superlative is potentially being made, then that buzz will continue... and if that other rumour about UD not showing up is true, it'll be an ITG-heavy show.

I'm making the trip, as are about 50 other HIers... the after-Expo festivities are always worthwhile ;)

This is a little of topic but I could use some help with this one....I was told that if somebody has a DUI they will not be allowed to cross the border into Canada from the US without paying a 250 dollar fine and signing a contract stating that you won't drive while in the country....Even if you had a DUI many years ago....Do you guys know if this is true because I'd like to one day take the trip to one of these shows

If you have a valid US driver's license I see no reason why they wouldn't let you go. I've also never heard of such a thing as paying $250 to be able to drive.

I don't think a DUI would even show up on your passport unless you went to jail for it.

They will deny you if you have a criminal record, and the odds of that are slim depending on the severity of the crime.

My cousin had a DUI (and a criminal record) and he was going to Florida for a wedding (from Canada) and they told him he could stay for 3 days instead of the 1 week he had planned.

If you're unsure, just bring proof that you're going to the card show (passes, fliers, cards, if you own a card business show your business card etc) to show them you have a valid reason for being there . They're not THAT strict on that sort of stuff from what I know. At the very most he'll say you can stay for only the days of the show and a day or two after.

My brother-in-law was stopped at the Canadian border and not permitted entry the first time. Call your customs agency to find out for sure.

Back on topic, the people you meet in this hobby through the boards and other places, are cool to get to know over email, the chat room and even the telephone... but lasting friendships happen when you meet in person. Expo solidifies the relationships we've built online.

I'll second Bruce's sentiment. Meeting face-to-face really is a great opportunity to get to know online friends even better.

As for UD's lack of attendance at the Spring Expo, I thought they mentioned that in their open discussion here at HI....no?

The $250 fine thing is not true. A driver's licence is issued by your respective state/province - it's either valid or it's not. As for the DUI, they can refuse entry. Best to check it out a head of time.

I've been a regular fixture at the spring and fall for several years now. Although it's nice to buy and sell - mostly the latter :D - the meet-n-greet is by far and away the BEST part of Expo for me. There are dozens of people with whom I'd been dealing for years that I first met at the Expo - it's just awesome.

Its fun. As been mentioned by a number of people here the meet and greet is the best part.

Oh, and 2 words you may want to remember that weekend:

Spearmint Rhino

Almost the entire vancouver lower mainland HI regulars will be going. I have heard the after show gatherings are fun as well :)

I have reserved a seat at arizona's already :)
