Wings Retiring #5

As a complete Detroit hater I have to admit, probably the third best dman of all time, well deserved! Happy they're not waiting till he's too old. Classy move for a classy guy.

How can you hate Detroit:p

As with the rest of your statement I have to agree 100% Curious though, aside from Orr who is the other D-man? Doug Harvey maybe?

What took them so long? Arguably the greatest D-man to ever lace them up. Pure class, HOF, 4 Cups, Olympic Gold, WC, and a boatload of hardware to boot. Congratulations to #5, Nick is the man

They had planned on doing it last year but after speaking with Nick they decided to wait and do it up right next year! Planning on going it should be awesome!

Pete being an Isles fan... I would guess it's another D-man to wear #5 and play for the Isles. Unless he's not a homer... ;) Point-per-game guy on D. Just my guess since he hasn't posted back yet.

Oh! and congrats to Nik... definitely up there with the best defenceman of all time. Longevity/durability has to count as a factor as well when deciding who's the best.

Well, it can safely be assumed Orr is number 1. As for #2-10, there's so many interchangeable names. Potvin, Bourque, Lidstrom, Harvey, Robinson, Howell, Neidermayer, hell, even Pronger could gain some consideration. Too many to choose form, each with their merits.

Regardless, Lidstrom is up there for sure, and to see his number hanging along the other Red Wing greats, will be cool.

Good on 'em - and glad to see them do it so quickly while he is still so visible and memorable to all of the fans young and old.

Truly one of the best ever...at any position.
