Winter Classic might be cancelled

The weather for Saturday here is supposed to be rain and around 50 degrees....this may force the winter classic to be cancelled for Saturday and tried to be played on Sunday but rain is in the forecast for that day as well. If that is the case, the game will be moved indoors and played at a later date.

It was suppose to be a blizzard the day of the classic last year and it hit the day before. The day of the classic it was clear as day. Don't worry yet. If it gets canceled, it will be a huge blow to the fans and the city.

It's just a game, life will go on.

The Winter classic should only be played in Canada. The NHL has been darn lucky the past few years with the weather in the States.

Not true. Its more than a game. Its a HUGE economic boost to the city. That area of Heinz field turns into a huge hockey village. Fans going to the restaurants, hotels, it a big revenue booster. When I was in Boston, the buildup and being there felt like it was a Stanley Cup final game.

I thought it was bigger then a Stanley Cup Finals game. Easily one of the best trips of my life. Just awesome.

The revenue generated is just all gravy. It'll still be a home game for the Pens if it's cancelled.
 
No different than the original game - the Heritage Classic in Edmonton. It was about -23C and -30C or so wind chill. If the temperature dropped another 10 degrees, the game would've been called off at Commonwealth and taken back to Rexall Place.

Naturally, if the game would've been played on Sunday instead - it would've been perfect - the temperature was -2C the next day, but that's Alberta weather for you...
 
So, no matter where the game was to be played, what happens to all the people who are left out in the cold (so to speak), if they decide to move it indoors to be played? No indoor venue will hold the same amount of people, so all the cost to everyone attending gets thrown out the window? And how do they decide who does get to attend? Can't wait to see them try to sort out that incredible fiasco. If it does come to pass that is.

That is already decided.. The game will be attended by Penguins season ticket holders..

Because Boston, Chicago, and Buffalo are so warm in January. Unlike that oh-so perfect, predictable weather in Northwest Canada.

:laugh: If you plan on attending the game in Calgary pack either a swim suit or snow pants. I still remember the weather headaches they had during the '88 Olympics.

That's not a good example. Not even the NHL wouldn't be dumb to host an outdoor game in the Pacific Northwest on New Years Day. I'm guessing Blueshirts' comment was based on Central and Eastern Canada, where you could probably host the Winter Classic in the middle of the summer :p

Yeap, I missed the part where I said the PacNorWest.

But anyways, there have been many a New Years' Day where I have gone fishing in very comfortable weather here in PA. Very common to get a streak of mid weather in January. Average temps are mid 30's for my neck of the woods near the Poconos, so seeing 40's for several days happpens more than some would think.
 
If it gets canceled, maybe the Minnesota Vikings can play the Lions on Saturday instead of Sunday on the rink. They seem to like all their schedule and field changes! :beer:
