Someone posted a pic of a MacKinnon Cup RC in the S&T section and it got me thinking about the MacKinnon NT Patch Auto RC /5 that I pulled. I know MacKinnon's cards have come down to Earth in the last while, but not like this. This is the card I pulled:

I sold this card to a collector in California for $4,500US.

This auction just ended on March 21st...

Welp.

Holy cow. I knew his cards were way over hyped and priced in his rookie year but not to this extend. I think it being a Panini product doesn't help.

Rookies: sell them while they're hot. If they're any good, you can buy'em back later.

;)

Seen it through the years...the hot product is the current product, everything else...yeah, you can make a good deal. Products like this will receive more hype in about 5-10 years when you have set collectors or PC collectors clamoring for them.

Values go down as time goes by...be very happy you made out like a bandit when you did.

I think this holds particularly true for The Cup and it's singles in general.

Everyone goes nuts upon release. The thing is, when you're going for broke on that card numbered to 10 that TYPICALLY won't show up again for awhile. With The Cup it will. Like in 2 days. The Cup is so heavily broken it seems cards 10 or less have 7-8 of them show up.

But I digress, Ryan, that's a terrific show of market data on a super high end product parallel of the that year's top rookie.

Patience is a virtue with MOST hockey cards.

I always get the sense that rookie cards are priced right out of the gate as if the player had already reached their projected potential. How accomplished and how popular would Nathan Mackinnon have to be by now (after just 3 seasons) to sustain a $4,500 price level on his rookie card - even one numbered to 5? You definitely read the market right by selling when you did!

Wowza, that's almost as steep a drop as my Sedin Cup black "1/1's" that I dropped a C note apiece on only to realize I'd bought the sheet cut artist proofs :) (I learned a valuable lesson that day, read the title before hammering the BIN button, lol).

Man can't believe someone actually paid 4500 for that... do you know if they were a hockey collector? NT seemed to have a lot of crossover appeal to folks from primarily other sports who may not have realized just how drastically different the hockey market is when it comes to rc parallels, but what an expensive way to learn that lesson.

I pulled the gold parallel of this (numbered to 29 I believe) with a pretty bland patch when the product was released... I got 1800$ cash for it. I can guarantee you it's not what they go for nowadays... o_O

I pulled this card at a shop in front of a group of guys that are notorious for holding their cards for too long. Their first comment was "you gotta put that in a safe deposit box!" and my response was "bollocks!". I listed it that night, had a deal in place by the morning and it was off to California that afternoon.

I should show them this to show them why I DON'T hold on to cards that mean nothing to me.

I'm still stunned. Unreal.

And it was shilled to boot (PWCC auctions are notorious for shilling). Congrats on cashing in when you did.
