Opposite of the regret thread.

What did you sell or trade where you made out like a bandit and got your best win? Do you still have lit?

Back in the 90 s D & A had a listing on EBay for a case of Zenith Dare to tear for
99$. I’m sure they meant for a box. I don’t know if I hit the BIN faster or drove to their warehouse, I had a 03 Marauder. Case had 8 boxes. Ive been reaping the big bucks to this day.😁🤑:rock::rock:

I told a Panini REP @ Expo about 10 ears ago WHAT I had paid for the card AND his response was that they had forked out A LOT MORE for the autograph!

...... for these TWO puppies which were the last 2 cards I needed to complete the 2005/06 Ultimate Collection RC AU set.

THEY should be graded, would have been graded last EXPO but chose to bring about 20 UD YGs / Canvas YGs (Makar, Q. Hughes, Suzuki, Kaprizov, .....) instead.
The price was TOO steep per card and nothing was achieved!

Went to a local auction in 2012 that had a bunch of mid-90's hockey thrown into random lots. Was able to preview everything in person, so I knew what I would be after when the auction started.

The auction had way too many lots, and was going so slow that they had to speed up the process by basically auctioning off the opportunity to choose from multiple lots. I was the high bidder for this specific set of lots at $60, so I had my choice of which lots, (say #150-200) that I would be willing to pay $60 each for.

A good chunk of what I was after was in this group of lots, including one lot that was a binder with a complete set of (330) 1995-96 Score Black Ice Artist Proof cards. I ended up selling them off one by one, and probably made about 20-25X my investment just on that binder alone, not to mention the other deals from the other lots.

Ryan Hamilton auto/2 colour patch (forgot which Panini product) for $500 US about 3 years ago. Yes Ryan Hamilton, career AHL’er who had a cup of coffee for the Leafs and Oilers and yes $500 US. Pulled it from a pack, maybe not more then $10 was the price of the pack

Nothing special, but I paid like $2 for a 10 card Gretzky lot on ebay. Sold one of the cards (insert) for $80 on ebay a few months later.

Minus the madness that has happened since the onset of the pandemic, my best deal ever involved a monster box of inserts that I couldn’t give away. Had it in tow at Expo and was looking at a dealer’s booth and he asked what was in the box and how much. I told him what was in it and jokingly said “your Gretzky RC”. He went quiet and in my head I’m thinking “no way he’s thinking about this”. He asks to look, I let him, we make the deal and I walk out with my first Gretzky RC ever.

Basketball

Bought 2 Topps Chrome Kobe RC's ( not refractors) both PSA 10, local Hobby Shop Going out of business sale 12 years ago.
Don't really collect basketball - but hey its Kobe.

Somebody saw them on my PB right after his untimely death and made an offer that I could not refuse. Absolutely crazy return on investment.

Right before the pandemic, I went to a local auction house which had taken on the inventory of a sports card shop that went out of business circa 2008. I filled my car to the brim with boxes and binders of cards and other items at a cost of about $230. These included Crosby rookies, Ovechkin rookies, high gloss cards, game used, numbered, complete sets, you name it, there was tons there.

Two years later, I am still profiting on it and am probably at about 50-100 times my investment back so far. That doesn't even include the smaller non-card items I got in there that I use as $5 giveaways at sports card shows which would add about another 5-10x back on top of it.

Probably my favorite week of my life and I know a chance like that to get so many things at such great prices will never come again.

I won an auction for a Murray Wilson and Claude Lemieux Habs Inks for $19.99. The last Wilson sold for $84 and the Lemieux is worth that, or more.

Bought a 2-colour Darnell Nurse Cup ARP, and a redemption for a Leon Draisaitl Cup ARP for $250. The Leon was fulfilled pretty quickly... and I got a three colour patch.

That one worked out pretty good for me.

years ago at this point, the most I ever paid for a card was 600 dollars for an ovechkin bgs 9.5 sp authentic rookie, needless to say with all ovechkin stuff, that one worked out for me.

These two trades come to mind for me…

I received
Draisaitl YG

I sent in return
210 Tyler Wotherspoon, Calgary Flames
212 Victor Rask, Carolina Hurricanes
220 Ryan Sproul, Detroit Red Wings
228 Christian Folin, Minnesota Wild

And this second trade as well…

I received
13/14 YG: 483 Kucherov, 499 Lindholm

I sent…
14/15 YG: 204 Khokhlachev-246 McKegg
14/15 Canvas Base. 2-20-74

A little over a year ago, a collector reached out to me to sell his entire collection of UD sets (with YGs), 2013-14 Prizm Master set and 2013-14 Titanium set with Rookies. I bought all this right before the boom. It took a while to receive (about a month and a half) but during that time, values on many cards doubled if not tripled. Needless to say it was an amazing deal.

A few weeks later, I purchased a Pastrnak Cup RPA for $800 which I traded for a Eichel Cup RPA which I then traded for about $5000 of high end autos/rookies/patches.

When the Bruins won the Cup with Tim Thomas winning the Conn Smythe & Vezina trophy that same year, a lot of his rookie cards were on Becket Marketplace for dirt cheap, literally a dollar or 2. I snatched them all up and made some decent money on them.
