Your Hobby Goals/Resolutions for 2020

I am down to the final 5 Kyle Wellwood cards to be at 100%. 4 of the cards I haven't seen since the sets were released and missed out on the last card

What are the last few Kyle Wellwood cards you need?

Nice to see you're still keeping the chase alive.

I can't imagine being that close to 100% for any player collection, so that in itself is a pretty huge accomplishment I think.

Best of luck with the final 5 !

I'm going to keep my goals for 2020 simple, mainly so that I don't add any stress to the hobby that I love. I want to keep enjoying the hunt for new Iginla cards, and as many others have noted, organize what I do have. I've used Photobucket and Flickr in the past, and hopefully I have landed on my final platform, Weebly. I want to keep adding new contacts and having fun at the shows.

To sell off most of my cards, buy a few higher end cards to put away, and get out of this hobby. For me personally I can’t afford or can’t find the cards I want/need. The sets I’m working on I will most likely never see the cards I’m missing and when I do they are outrageously priced. Having 5 kids doesn’t leave me much time or money to play with either. I’d much rather put that money towards one of the 300 activities my wife signs them up for.

Seen a lot of goals with organization being a key theme.

I've done a lot of that this past year whether it's online organization or the physical cards themselves. Now, my collection is much, much smaller than others on here no doubt, but I feel organization is such a key aspect to really look at what you have so you can appreciate it and/or map out where you want your collection to branch out or scale down from there.

For me, after things were organized, I was able to simplify my collecting habits more.

05-06 Upper Deck MVP Platinum #359 (/25)
09-10 O-Pee-Chee Retro Blank Backs #460
12-13 Score Black Ice #489
13-14 Score Red Back #547
17-18 TML Centennial Blue Exclusives #85 (/99)

Missed out on the Blue Exclusives a while back, have not seen any copy of the other cards

Dang, sorry to hear about the Blue Exclusives #/99. There are a lot of set collectors for the Leafs Centennial product. I'm sure you'll track one down someday.

I didn´t make any resolutions last year. But I wish I did because I finished my Doug Lidster collection 100%, of course some oddball cards may occur but at least I did it. To finish my Lidster collection was definitely 2014-15 upper deck 25th anniversary buybacks # 60 and 13-14 Fleer Ultra buybacks. My resolutions is 2004-05 Upper Deck legendary signatures linemates # TISST #50 PRINT and hit Linden collection over 1500 cards plus please white whale 1997-98 Zenith Gold Trevor Linden arrive here Finland one day.

Best of luck in 2020! Those Zenith Gold's are tough ones.

1) Finalize a complete Luongo checklist and finish my website (Never going to happen)

2) Continue to add to the 01-02 and 02-03 BTP sets

3) Complete every goalie rc and UD YG goalie since 90-91

I want something to keep me going, but like some of you, my interest has been decreased the past year. With Luongo retiring and leafs young studs too expensive, I just have nothing to chase anymore.

Always wanted to start a player collection from day one of a players career, but how do you even pick that these days?

Chris

If you need any more help with the Luongo checklist, let me know. SportsCardForum's Inventory manager is a great tool, honestly. Best of luck with your Luongo PC!

And great question about player collecting.Collecting a player from day one is really fun. However, with Exclusive license and the way products are shaped nowadays, It truly is a gamble if you're going to try and decide who to collect these days. Those 4th line journeyman or backup goalies anymore just won't get enough cardboard for it to be fairly long-lasting. Unless you collect a player like this for fun and they happen explode onto the hobby forefront (A recent example would be a guy like Binnington or Devan Dubnyk and his MN Wild resurgence a few years back, bringing him a flood of new cards out of nowhere.)

After their rookie year, their cards are almost non-existant, unless you're lucky. The Superstars are too expensive, so you'd maybe want one of those middle of the road players/goalies who is going to stick around for some cardboard. But who? I would say just let the player "find you" in a sense and hope they can be apart of a franchise moving forward. Maybe not the face of the franchise, but someone 2nd or third on the roster eventually.

Here are my 2020 goals

1. Do Not sell the collection no matter what
2. Try and get first player game used, Toe Blake, Frank Patrick, Newsy Lalonde, just to name some, theres more just too much to name.
3. collect the players, Montreal Canadiens, and just stuff I like
4. Keep adding to the BAP Ultimate and ITG Ultimate Memorabilia collection
5. Maybe bust a box of ITG Ultimate if possible, maybe unlikely but never know

Haven't really given a ton of thought about concrete goals, but here's some I came up with now:

1) Acquire at least one player PC whale card
2) Get up to 15 Hjalmarsson Mega Patch chest logo pieces (was at 12 when the calendar turned)
3) Make progress on the 2003-04 Parkhurst Original Six Chicago master set...this is a new goal of mine. Already have the base set multiple times, but only have a handful of memorabilia cards and one auto, so tons of heavy lifting to do there.
4) Continue to help other collectors acquire PC cards (had a ton of luck with this in 2019)
5) Find a few big investment cards (cards I can buy knowing I can sell them relatively quickly for a big profit)
6) Scan cards and upload scans in a more timely fashion

My goal in 2020 is to further streamline my collection.

I might even start reducing the amount of YGs in my collection.

I want to continue to add higher end quality and reduce the quantity in my collection.

My goal is to finally get out of the hobby that I love for good. I have been collecting since I bought my first pack when I was 11 years old back in 1985, but I have finally lost the passion for collecting. It has been happening slowly over the last few years.

There are many reasons I am getting out:

- Expensive shipping costs ($9 to mail internationally,),.
- Rising ebay buying and selling fees.
- The Upper Deck monopoly over hockey.
- The rising number of so called reputable companies and online business that have questionable and shady business practices.
- Not having a hobby shop within 120 miles doesn't help either (stuck with retail only).
- Not many local collectors to trade with.
- To many internet lowballers and people Wanting lopsided deals.

Now I have to just weigh my options and find the right place to sell everything (I.e. Ebay of COMC). Do I give into the dark side and sell it as a lot on feebay, or piece it out on COMC for a huge discount.

Not many, if any, will likely reply to this because it's going to be perceived as negative, and gosh forbid anyone can be anything but unicorns and billowy clouds with sparkling sunshine coming through! Ha!

It's ok man, I get it, it's called reality and finding your own happiness. Sometimes that involves leaving a hobby that definitely is NOT anywhere as fun as it once was as a whole. It's still enjoyable, and there's a lot of good people, but overall it's gone down dramatically, and I am speaking about the hockey card hobby specifically. The other sports, especially baseball and basketball, are thriving MASSIVELY.

I really tried to get out completely myself, but, and I'm just going to throw this out there, have you tried another sport? My kids and I switched to baseball because they enjoy it more, and we also have greater success collecting in the US, much the same as Canadians do in their country with hockey. That all plays into the shipping thing, I get it, it's dumb. I don't have a problem dealing with the shipping rates because the buyer is paying them, not me, so business as usual. But I am sure it scares some folks off?

I did some soul searching to find out what has kept me happy with regard to hockey cards all the years, despite all the things you mentioned and more. I found my answer in an old card box and binder so I am now starting to grab a very tiny bit of hockey again, with a very narrow focus.

If you're done though, I suggest COMC for the bulk of it, and piece out the better cards at auction, 7 days, 99 cents, run em!

Good luck to you either way!

For me, my goals are:

Card wise:
Add one Turco 1/1
Add one Turco from my wantlist
Move some of my non Turco stuff... too much junk sitting around

Game worn wise:
Add 10 Eric Comrie gamers
Add 1 Turco gamer
Add another Moose Jaw Warriors and Medicine Hat Tigers jersey to the collection
Reach 380 goalie gamers

Best of luck with this. I would lean towards COMC right now. Piecing things out should land you more in the end, plus COMC takes care of the listing/shipping for you. It would probably be a longer process to liquidate everything though, depending on what cards you'd be looking to get rid of.

Glad to see you decided to undertake that Master Set project.

Best of luck with the Hjalmarsson mega patches, too!
