My goal is to finally get out of the hobby that I love for good. I have been collecting since I bought my first pack when I was 11 years old back in 1985, but I have finally lost the passion for collecting. It has been happening slowly over the last few years.
There are many reasons I am getting out:
- Expensive shipping costs ($9 to mail internationally,),.
- Rising ebay buying and selling fees.
- The Upper Deck monopoly over hockey.
- The rising number of so called reputable companies and online business that have questionable and shady business practices.
- Not having a hobby shop within 120 miles doesn't help either (stuck with retail only).
- Not many local collectors to trade with.
- To many internet lowballers and people Wanting lopsided deals.
Now I have to just weigh my options and find the right place to sell everything (I.e. Ebay of COMC). Do I give into the dark side and sell it as a lot on feebay, or piece it out on COMC for a huge discount.
Not many, if any, will likely reply to this because it's going to be perceived as negative, and gosh forbid anyone can be anything but unicorns and billowy clouds with sparkling sunshine coming through! Ha!
It's ok man, I get it, it's called reality and finding your own happiness. Sometimes that involves leaving a hobby that definitely is NOT anywhere as fun as it once was as a whole. It's still enjoyable, and there's a lot of good people, but overall it's gone down dramatically, and I am speaking about the hockey card hobby specifically. The other sports, especially baseball and basketball, are thriving MASSIVELY.
I really tried to get out completely myself, but, and I'm just going to throw this out there, have you tried another sport? My kids and I switched to baseball because they enjoy it more, and we also have greater success collecting in the US, much the same as Canadians do in their country with hockey. That all plays into the shipping thing, I get it, it's dumb. I don't have a problem dealing with the shipping rates because the buyer is paying them, not me, so business as usual. But I am sure it scares some folks off?
I did some soul searching to find out what has kept me happy with regard to hockey cards all the years, despite all the things you mentioned and more. I found my answer in an old card box and binder so I am now starting to grab a very tiny bit of hockey again, with a very narrow focus.
If you're done though, I suggest COMC for the bulk of it, and piece out the better cards at auction, 7 days, 99 cents, run em!
Good luck to you either way!
