Your Hobby Goals & Resolutions For 2022

I figured I'd post this up early this year since December will arrive next week!

It's that time of year again. The time when we sharpen those pencils and write down all of those sweet, sweet cardboard goals we'd like to accomplish in the new year.

For those who'd like to review your goals from last year, you can review Last Year's Hobby Goals / Resolutions Thread for 2021.


These were my goals for 2021:

1) Reach 600 total cards in my Jhonas Enroth collection (Duplicate cards are allowed). I'm pretty much shooting for the stars with this goal, but that's okay with me.

Result: Success! I am now sitting at 635 cards in total with my Enroth PC. A very large increase indeed coming from 543 cards around this time last year.

While I did get help from some duplicate lots and expanding the collection with some oddball cards (cameos, checklists, etc), I did manage to acquire some fantastic new pieces for the collection, including some I hadn't seen before.

2) Have a ton of fun! It's not a hobby unless it's fun... So I'm going to have fun with it.

Result: Fun! And lots of it! After keeping up the podcast this past year, it's been fun to talk about this hobby I love. I even was able to attend the recent Sports Card Expo to cap off a wonderful year in the hobby.


Here are my goals for 2022:


1) Get my Jhonas Enroth collection to 700 total cards.

This will be another tough task to attempt this year when it comes to growing the collection, but I am up to the task. I will definitely try and lean on some more 'oddball' card additions to help me achieve this goal. But you never know what else you might find along the way. My current count stands at 635 Enroth cards.


2) Complete my Upper Deck 300 Win Club set.

This is a set I haven't been able to add to in quite some time. I am just down to needing the Kipper and Belfour to complete this memorabilia set. The Belfour will be the hardest one to land due to the rarity (Group A 1:16,605 Packs) and price point, but the Kipper isn't an easy find either (Group B 1:4,754 Packs). Both cards are from the original 2012-13 A Piece of History set.


3) Expand my vintage goalie card collection.

While this collecting venture isn't exactly new, it hasn't been something I've been able to focus on all that often. With one card incoming, I hope this can spark my ability to focus on the types of cards I'd like to start trying to land for this project. I really enjoy the history of this hobby, as well as the history of the goaltending position, so this feels like a natural fit.


4) Have fun.

This one seems pretty self explanatory and borderline cliche, however, in a hobby that has taken a wildly different turn in the past two years or so, it's easy to get 'caught up in the hype' and lose why you started to collect in the first place or question if you are 'doing it right' from time-to-time. I hope that I can continue to stick to my lane, collect what I truly enjoy, and share that with the hobby community at large. For those that I've interacted with over the past year, I hope you and your collections can flourish in 2022. You deserve it.

My goal was to hit a buckle out of Vezina Collection. Fail! Hit a strap though so I came close.

For 2022:



Main Goal:
Hit 700+ cards for the Giacomin collection. I am right around 625 now so I think that's doable.

Necessary Goal:
Organize my Giacomin PC. It's all in chronological order but too many boxes. I have a bunch of supplies stockpiled already for this and plan to do it over Christmas vacation.

Long Term Project Goal:
I'd also like to start a new long-term, somewhat affordable, project. Leaning towards 21/22 OPC base and some of the base parallel sets. I love breaking wax, and like sorting and organizing, so would like to find a project that fits the bill. OPC really seems to. Tons of stuff to chase to keep me busy, nothing should be too expensive, and all would store nicely in albums. The Giacomin PC keeps me semi busy so I'm looking for a way to stay more involved in collecting rather than a 30 second search on eBay a couple tmes a day.

Other than that I would say try to spend less money on cards but I'll just go ahead and say I failed that one already.

1) Finish the 99-00 Epic Signatures set .. Down to Lemieux, Howe, Bourque and Robinson.
2) Add more to my Newfoundland Born PC, shouldn't be overly expensive minus Mercer and Newhook.
3) Enjoy what I have, and what I'm able to collect, more. For far too long I focused on value and making a few bucks, and didn't focus on the just enjoying the cards I do own. I've stopped selling on ebay due in part to the horrible over charges of their fees and found my collection growing more then it has in years. Alot of it is low/mid end but I still love digging through my boxes and finding stuff I forgot about.
4) Making it to the spring expo... Cheating for this one.. already booked my flights and Hotel.
 
1. Continue to build my presence in COMC
2. Continue to acquire more blue chip cards in all sports
3. Continue with my podcast and have boatloads of fun
 
My main hobby goal for 21-22 is to have fun! For sure, I'll continue hunting for Gino Odjck cards, Habs/Nordiques that catches my eyes, 80s rookies, look for some cards to finish a few sets.
A thing that I enjoy a lot is to break affordable wax and make small trades for the joy of it. I had a lot of fun with discounted UD1 19-20 and UD extended 20-21 blasters, I want to continue on that path. I have some UD1 19-20, Allure 20-21 and Extended 20-21 retail sealed on my shelf for rainy days, and I ordered a bunch of OPC Platinum blasters this morning.
 
Retrospective of my 2021 goals

I had five goals for my collection or collecting habits in 2021 and I think I mostly nailed it.

1. Knock out a few sets or specific cards I am after

I accomplished this one! I brought in the Beliveau and Plante I needed to finish the 2002-03 ITG Used Vintage Memorabilia set. I also brought in a number of Gilbert Perreault autos I had been after for a while, including two copies of the elusive XSP Legends Classics auto.

2. Cut back on E-Pack

Mostly a success - though Chronology Vol. 2 pushed me to use it more than I expected to. I really need for that product to finally sell out so I'm not tempted to open a box every now and then.

3. Add autographs of Crosby, Toews, Matthews, and other modern big stars

Success! I pulled my first Matthews and Toews signatures out of Chronology Vol. 2 (the Toews is a redemption) and finally pulled the trigger on a relatively cheap Crosby auto off auction. I still want to pull a Crosby someday, but I know the chances of that are slim. I also added autographs of current premier guys like Panarin and Kucherov, amongst others.

4. Organize my display and storage

A work-in-progress but largely successful. I started an Instagram account for my collection, which has sparked a lot of fun as well.

5. Add at least two new HHOF certified cut autographs to the collection

Overwhelming success! I ended up with cuts of Plante, Horton, Harvey, Syl Apps Sr., Babe Pratt, Lionel Conacher, Foster Hewitt, King Clancy, Hap Day, and Ken Dryden, to name some of the bigger players. I was also able to bring in an on-card OFS autograph of Vaclav Nedomansky.

Now for my 2022 goals!

1. Add Gilbert Perreault autograph #100 to the collection

I recently reached 99 total autographs of Perreault and want to hit 100 before dialing it back a bit. I would like #100 to either be one of the white whales I have long been after or something big, like a Limited Logos or something similar. We'll see what happens!

2. Be more purposeful with my addtions/spending

I added a ton to my collection this past year. On top of adding to my Perreault and HHOF auto collections, I started autograph collections for USHHOF and IIHHOF inductees. No regrets! But I'm just going to be after cards that have long been on my wishlist for 2022. Namely, I want to finally reel in the Parkhurst Original Six Ken Wharram autograph and I need an Alexander Maltsev signature too. I've ordered two different autos of Maltsev this past year and both ended up lost in the mail. :curse:

3. Add two new HHOF cut autos (if the price is right!)

Like last year, cut autos are the only path forward I have for adding new signatures to my HHOF collection, for now. I would like to add two more and get my total up to 155 enshrined members. But I'm not looking to break the bank to do so.

4. Continue to have fun with my Instragram account

I created an IG account to show off cards from my collection in September and it has been a blast so far. Super positive community and I was even able to pull in some low-numbered Perreault autographs through networking. I don't necessarily have anything specific I am shooting for with the account - just to have fun!
 
Looking back at my resolutions and wow, came a long way, much further than I thought!

2021
  1. I was missing 3 key cards for my Erik Karlsson PC but I found all 3! I've now put it and my Hedman collection into the vault as I'm happy with where they are at and am no longer actively adding to them.
  2. Build out my FWA collection - this one I did and now I'm actually disassembling it. I'm keeping some key ones but overall there's just too many that I found I was adding just to finish my list. I've narrowed it down a ton to just ~1/3rd of what I previously had.
  3. OPCP rainbow rookies - I didn't end up starting this side PC. Instead, I'm working on a NHL 100 PC, where I'm trying to add at least 1 cool card that I like of NHL 100 players. It's been rewarding and I get to learn some of the history of the game while I research the players (when I have time that is haha).

Okay! On to my 2022 goals...
  1. I started a small, high-end Draisaitl, Malkin, and Stamkos PC. I got lucky before Draisaitl started exploding and I'm happy with the pieces I have. I've added most of what I want for the Malkin and Stamkos PC but I'm missing one card a piece - Malkin's Ultimate RPA /25 and Stamkos' FWAP /100. I missed out on several copies of the latter on ebay, ended up 2nd highest bidder multiple times, unfortunately. 2022 goal - add either Malkin's Ultimate RPA or Stamkos' FWAP.

  2. Keep adding to the Ultimate /99 collection and add to the FWA collection when things pop up for a good price. As I wound down the FWA collecting, I've picked up Ultimate /99s as I like the shorter-printed aspect of it and they're also a hard-signed rookie auto. 2022 goal - add 1 or 2 of the Ultimate /99s I'm missing and hopefully add a few off-list ones for a good deal if I can. FWAs, only when I find them for a good deal (off-season shopping?).
  3. NHL 100 PC - keep looking for Brown Border Brushstrokes autos. This one I'm not in any rush to do, just happy to slowly chip away at. I see this project as one I want to work on for a long-time. There's quite a few NHL 100 members who aren't in the set and I've yet to figure out which cards I'll get for them. 2022 goal - snag at least 1 more Brushstrokes auto when I can.

That about does it for me. We'll re-visit these next year and see where I'm at. Made some massive, massive progress in collecting and it's been a genuine pleasure to be back in this hobby for the past year+. Cheers to all and a very happy collecting year next year!
 
Let's keep it simple for 2022 goals:

Game Worn Goals for the Museum:

1) Add at least another 20 unique goalies to the archives, perhaps even make a push and try to get up to 25% of the league's history (currently at over 22%)

2) Complete planning and consultation with appropriate parties (locations, government officials) to secure funding and set up a single full showcase museum exhibition (to start with) that is all my own and not a part of a "card show".

3) Keep up with my "Interview With an NHL Hero" series and try to get a goalie at least every 1-2 months.

4) Make even more revenue by monetizing my passion.

5) See if I can push my YouTube channel to 500 subscribers (more is better, but I am not shooting for the stars yet).

Card goals for my company

1) Do less box breaks since they are not only becoming more of a money sink, they are getting less and less fun to do which is a deadly combo and begs the question why I still do them.

2) Acquire more higher ticket items with higher profit margins which can then be re-invested into larger museum items. Why buy at $2 to move an item at $20 if I can buy at $2000 to flip for $5000 or more to reinvest into the hobby and my goalie museum company.

3) Add select pieces for my own lock-away PC. Not about how valuable they are, but what they mean to me.

These were my goals for 2021:

In the game worn world:

1) Add at least another 20 goalies into the collection (with at least one superstar)

UPDATE---By my count, I am currently at 19 new goalies added this year with over a month to go, and I have fulfilled my superstar goal with a Tim Thomas set and perhaps I'd count my Denis DeJordy game used glove.

2) Have a public exhibition since I could not in 2020 (COVID permitting)

UPDATE---accomplished on a teeny tiny scale, but no big setup this year.

3) Set up a game worn only expo (COVID permitting)

UPDATE---same problems that came with not having a big setup.

4) Increase revenue, awareness, and frequency of commissions for my relevant services (ie: photomatching) by at least 50%

5) Wrangle in at least one new goalie every 3-4 weeks for my "Interview With An NHL Hero" YouTube series.

UPDATE---I was off to a good start, but slowed down.

For my cards:

1) Finally start group breaks and razz raffles (already have my first razz planned for January) on my site to increase my company's revenue by up to 40%.

---Abandoned that plan, too many people jumped in around the same time and oversaturated that market. Plus it isn't my wheelhouse like game used memorabilia is and wrangling constantly complaining people to pay is not something I have patience for.

2) Increase the scale of my card sales online by at least 50%

---Accomplished. By far my highest revenue year for my company's online sales.

3) Buy up more collections purely to resell.

---Accomplished.

4) Develop self control and open less boxes for myself, and instead focus more on my group breaks (this is the toughest one lol).

---Self control? What that? And group breaks, forget it, I want all the shinies for myself.

5) Grow my YouTube channel and try to get it to 1000 subscribers by the end of 2021.

---It grew a lot, but my content is still too sporadic and not on a clear enough schedule/regular enough intervals to have a constant flow of new subscribers.

6) Then, tying in with #5, go for monetization so my business can have extra revenue. Extra revenue means more cards and more museum additions. Win-win!

---Ties in with number 5.
 
Great post and idea Aaron! It's been fun reading everyone's goals and resolutions so far! Any collector that stays focused through goals will find more enjoyment and contentment with their collection in my opinion. It's never bad to be/stay organized!

Goals for December 2021:

- Add one top 20 card off the visual wantlist

- Thin out the collection down to mainly Thibault and Marc-Andre Fleury only

- Complete 2020-21 OPC Platinum Rainbow minus the 1/1

- Finish designing website and publish it! (Deciding between WIX and Weebly)

Goals for 2022:

- Land 3-5 top 20 Wantlist cards

- Get lighting for the two curio cabinets

- Start new Hockey Card Podcast on Youtube (The Baseball one was very successful. I'd like to take this to the next level!)

- Collaborate with Aaron on a blog post or his Podcast

- Record at least one collection update per two weeks for YouTube Channel

- Grow YouTube channel to 200+ subscribers
 
1) Finish my Canucks Young Guns PC. I currently have 57 out of 58 Canucks Young Guns.

2) Catch up with my Canucks Current and Former Player Young Guns PC. I currently have 155 out of 162 Young Guns of players who have played at least one game for the Canucks.

3) Catch up with my All-Time Canucks Organization Young Guns PC. I currently have 179 out of 190 Young Guns of players who have been a part of the Canucks organization including NHL contracts who played in the AHL, players who didn't play due to lockout, and drafted players who were traded or never signed.

Obviously these will always be growing since trades and free-agent signings will add new players but I want to catch up with the older players I am missing. Most of them are from 2000-01.

Finally 4) Grow my Young Guns collection from 708 cards to 850. I feel that with Upper Deck Series 1 and 2 coming out soon this should be reasonable. Who knows, UD might do another Extended Series and 2022-23 Series 1 might be out by this time next year. Definitely feasible.
 
My Goals for 2021:
Get the Bobby Ryan want list down to 50 Little over optimistic here got it down to 67 from 73....2 cards from 2020 added to the want list so 9 cards found from original list

Hit 1500 gretzky cards : started at 1393, currently sitting at 1491 with 3 on route from comc....so close

Finish off my 79/80 OPC set (currently at 341/396) and my 1980 OPC baseball set (currently at 158/374) finished the baseball sitting at 390/396 for the hockey
Attend an expo......meaning there has to be one :) DONE!!!!!
Attend a tim hortons trade night...........meaning there has to be one :) Nothing again this year, I miss this trade night so much, but am not gonna argue with anyones decisions during covid. I did manage to help 7 little guys with their sets so far so that was rewarding enough for me

2022 Goals:

1) Help build my sons Brent Burns collection. This is the most exciting thing to happen to me in the hobby in years. My 10 year old son has taken up player collecting and has already made a couple of on line trades. His renewed interest in the hobby has renewed my interest. Seeing him go around the expo asking vendors if they had burns cards was awesome he was doing it all on his own. AND I saw his 14 year old brother going through one of his binders that he hasnt touched in years the other day.....maybe the time the younger one and I are spending in the hobby will bring him back into the fold :)

2) Add at least 10 Bobby Ryan cards from my want list

3) Finish the 79-80 OPC set (390/396) and 87 OPC baseball set (330/396)

4) work away at my 1977 Star Wars set (146/264)

5) Finish off at least 2 of the 10 or so Gretzky sets/insert sets I am working on
 
It was a very quiet 2021 for me, partly because I got most of I wanted in 2020 and partly (ok, MOSTLY) because I ran out of things to sell to fund new buys lol. Can only consolidate so much before you hit a wall and have to pay for new stuff entirely out of pocket. That said I did manage to get one big PC card back in the spring and just yesterday secured another that would have made my 2022 goals list but will now be a 2021 pickup.

So it doesn’t really leave me with any other big goals for next year at the moment. I might try to get more Ovechkin cards as he rockets his way up the goal scoring list, and maybe I’ll start branching out into other sports to pick up nice (but affordable) cards of some non-hockey GOATs. Right now I’m enjoying the PC I have and having fun following the craziness of the hobby.
 
Get into the sealed wax game.

I've started getting into it and have to do my best not to crack and bust the stuff that I'm sitting on. It's unbelievable to see the prices of some stuff from just a few years ago, mostly in baseball. I want to get in on the action.
 
My 2021 goals were "to continue adding any and all pre-lockout Roy cards I can get my hands on, while slowly expanding my focus on HOF/future HOF graded rookies".

I sold off my entire graded collection, minus the Roy's, to fund my Roy PC. So that was a bust, but not one I'm disappointed with.

The first part actually changed a few different times over the year. My PC focus changed to strictly playing years (85-03), exclusive of National Show/All Star Game issues. Given what I picked up in 2021, I would call that part of my goals a resounding success.

I have two specific goals for 2022: add one 1/1 Roy from my PC years, and reach 77.5% completion on my Roy PC. I currently sit at 71.30%. That would require 163 individual cards which, considering some of the higher level cards still needed, sounds much easier than I believe it is.

ETA: upping the percentage goal, since I'll likely be over 72% in the next week or so.

My goals are to continue buying OPC cards from 1970-1990, continue to plug away at completing my sets from those years and adding as many Gretzky cards and rookies from those years as possible.
 
For 2022

Build my Hall of Fame game used and autograph collection
Build my Montreal Canadiens collection bigger
Just buy what I like and maybe get some first time game used
