Your Hobby Goals & Resolutions For 2023

I don't think I've made a resolution before, so here we go.

1) Dip my toe slightly back into the hobby. I can't be nearly as all-in as I used to be, but I think I can start letting myself pick up things again. I just wish people would settle down and allow logic and rationale price their cards, not "it's a rookie! To the moon with you!"

2) I'd love to finish my 2015-16 OPC Platinum base set. Only missing one card: 187 - Noah Hanafin base auto RC. It was a redemption from what I remember, and I've only ever seen one of them. I have two rainbows and one seismic gold parallel of it, but I've yet to see the base version live.

3) Obtain one, if not both, of the two remaining cards from the 1999-2000 Upper Deck Exclusives set I need. 40 - Adam Foote and 206 - Doug Gilmour.

4) Going back to 2015-16 OPC Platinum, I would like to obtain the last Traxx parallel I need to put that one to bed (155 - Mike Bossy), and two Retro Rainbows (R42 - Claude Giroux and R61 - Tyler Ennis).

5) Finish the Platinum Blue Rainbow Autograph set from 2015-16 OPC Platinum as well. Only missing HA - Dominik Hasek. I saw one a year or so ago, but was outbid at the last moment, and haven't seen one since. Hadn't seen one before then, either, but there's got to be more than one copy out there, right? Right??

My goals for 2023:

1. Adler Mannheim Currently: 1512 Goal: 1560

2. Malmö Redhawks
Currently: 410 Goal: 420

3. Brett Hull
Currently: 1403 Goal: 1500

4. Matt Beleskey
Currently: 286 Goal: 290

5. Between the Pipes Masks
Currently: 459 Goal: 460
Last one missing: 2009-10 Between The Pipes Masked Men II #4 Patrick Roy

6. Between the Pipes Autographs
Currently: 572 Goal: 600

7. At least one 2013-14 Between the Pipes Complete Jersey.

8. At least one 2017-18 Leaf Masked Men 300 Win Club Memorabilia.

My simple goals from last year. As I reflect, this list was scripted when I was seeking all Whalers cards "while they wee part of the NHL"
  1. Trim my wantlist down to at least 30. This is aggressive but I gotta push
"GREAT SUCCESS!" I have this down to only 6 cards left!!
  2. Continue to seek new Whalers cards that fit into the collection. Currently the only ones I have on the horizon are a few team issued sets (but just the regular stock variety like Dairy Mart and Coca-Cola)
"GREAT SUCCESS!" I have expanded my landscape to include ALL production made Hartford Whalers cards!!!
Of the Team issued sets I now own all of them except one year (Burger King/Pepsi year)

  3. Continue to enjoy helping fellow collectors with my custom card work. This has really been rewarding on many levels!
"EASY SUCCESS!" Based on the feedback I've received, I feel I have helped quite a few. I'm not sure who enjoys it more, me or the recipient!

NEW goals for 2023
  1. My current catalog of unique Whalers cards is at 4,364, I would like to get to 4,400 but it'll be tough sledding
  2. Reconcile my own Excel collection data with tcdb.com This is a lofty goal, as I've been trying for months and can't get them to balance. At a minimum I plan to ask tcdb.com to add in the 11 Whalers cards that I own that aren't listed in their database! Even once those are added, I continue to hit a 3 card delta between the two listings
  3. Continue to enjoy helping fellow collectors with my custom card work
  4. Spend time on custom cards for the Hartford Whalers (they get less love each year from UD and no love from Leaf/ITG/PC, so I will create my own)
  5. My final goal is a soft one. I plan to continue to remind people that this is a hobby for many of us. Let's not lose focus on that. Yes there are sellers, flippers, breakers, and all other sorts of money grabbing participants, but let's try to keep the hobby from becoming obsolete due to greed. "Enjoy your hobby!"

Cheers
Glenn

For 2022 goals:

1) Pick up a Vezina rookie - well, that definitely did not happen. came close but I don't think I could have afforded the vezina and the divorce that would have soon followed
2) Keep archiving and thin out the collection for non-pc items - archiving, that has gone well; thinning, not even close. I made a list of available cards but never actually made them available...
3) Stop breaking wax!!! - well, I limited it to less than 10 boxes so I will call that a moderate success...
4) Keep having fun! - it's a hobby, this is a given

And Now For 2023 Goals:

1) Since it didn't happen last year, pick up a Vezina rookie
2) Complete my 2020 Ionix insert set (7 of 10 in hand)
3) Continue to add key cards to the Makar and Caufield rookie PCs
4) Break even less wax (though I have three boxes set to ship in January so maybe not off to a good start)
5) Post that available card list and possibly trade more
6) Continue to enjoy the hobby. It is just that, a hobby, so just enjoy what you have and like and do not bother trying to keep pace with anyone else.

-Scan and display my few non-Murphy side projects. These are not many so it wouldn't actually be time-consuming, I just seem to be unable to motivate myself to do it.

-I am just shy of 900 unique Murphy cards/card-adjacent items, which sounds impressive, but it's a very fluid number. I continue to change my mind, continue to streamline and continue to sell cards from my PC. As we speak, I probably have around 100 cards (mostly GU) that I wouldn't mind trimming, so if I had my way, I'd be closer to 800 than 900. I guess that's my goal - retool then build the numbers back up with premium cards I want more.

-Continue trying to move these cards, plus any other unrelated extras or cards that no longer fit the narrative. Makes a bit more room, and every dollar out is a dollar I could at least in theory put back into my PC.

-I have 9 of Murphy's 12 ITG Motown Madness nameplate (half) letters. It would be swell if I could get even one step closer to completion of that, but who knows if the remaining 3 are loose in the wild or still sealed in boxes. At any rate, a guy can dream.

-With my new(ish) direction of targeting as many different kinds of GU cards as possible from each of the teams Murphy played for, my goal is to keep filling more of those holes. In some cases, there are cards in circulation that would address that hole, but in many cases, such cards don't exist yet. Hopefully I can will some into existence. And if better examples of certain types of GU cards are released, I'd like to upgrade with them.

-I can tolerate generally slow hobby years if I get enough sparks to keep the fire going, but much like my now-beloved Engrained Dual Nameplate, I also crave a big fish that I can hang my hobby hat on for the year. Of the current top 10 cards on my wantlist, some are in the possession of members of these very boards and unattainable right now for various reasons. Others managed to elude me and are floating around elsewhere in the hobby universe. So I can hope one or more of those is freed up and finds its way home, but for now, I'm going to ask the hobby gods for good vibes and hope for the emergence of a card I have yet to see:

2020-21 President's Choice Game-Used Stick Rack StickHandle SH-82 Larry Murphy 1/1

Stick nameplate cards can be cornerstones of any PC. As per the checklist, allegedly this card pictures Murphy with Detroit, which would fill another major PC hole and probably push this card to #1 on my wantlist sight unseen after the acquisition of the Caps' dual. If I ever see it - and have a fair shot at it - rest assured I will do what I can to make it mine.

-Lastly, I want to continue to try to help others when and where I can. I know the feeling of joy I get when I knock a big card off my wantlist, and I want to pay it forward and have EVERYONE experience that feeling. Whether it's acting as a middleman or simply bringing a card to your attention that you wouldn't have otherwise seen, I want cards to find their proper homes. I can't be a wealthy benefactor who showers people with big gestures of kindness, but I can still do "something". And hey, it helps fill the time when my own collecting is slow :)

Thanks for the support of my collecting, and I wish you all the best with your own in 2023 and beyond.

Joe

Greats goals, everyone!

As we approach the new year, I wanted to wish you all a happy New Year's to bring in 2023! I hope you all can add some great cards this coming year.

My old goals for 2023:

"Finish my Canucks Young Guns PC"
- I have all 61 Canucks YGs that are released as of right now

"Catch up with my Canucks Current and Former Player Young Guns PC"
- I have all 185 YG of players who have played at least one game for the Canucks. I am missing two YGs for players who signed with the Canucks but never played for the big club.

"Grow my Young Guns collection from 708 cards to 850"
- I blasted through this goal with my current collection consisting of 1105 unique YGs.

As for 2023 Goals:

1 - Keep up my Canucks players YG collection - Collecting the YGs of players the Canucks sign and trade for.

2 - Grow my overall Young Guns collection from 1105 to 1400 unique cards

My hobby goals for 2023:

1. Attend my first expo in Toronto! I want see and do all of the great things I've only heard/seen from other expo attendees and youtube videos.

2. Acquire a high end and unique Gretzky piece to add to the collection

One of my favourite threads of the year, though I almost never actually accomplish my goals. Let me recap my 2022 goals first:

1)
Get down to 10 cards on my Andrea Bargnani non 1/1 rookie wantlist. (Currently sitting at 14)
FAILED- Was only able to knock off 1 card from my wantlist unfortunately!

2)
Reduce my Raptors auto (pre 2019) wantlist to 10 or lower.
(Currently sitting at 15 as well)
FAILED- This aspect of my collection wasn't a priority this year, so I didn't really make a dent.

3)
In 2021 I sold off a lot of my Sakic collection, hope to trim it down to 50 cards in 2022.
FAILED- Kept selling stuff, but still over 50... pretty close, so I think this will be realistic in 2023

4)
Somehow sell off all my non-PC cards, made big strides towards that in 2021
FAILED- Made even more strides towards this, sent in 800 cards to COMC at the expo, so that really helped...still failed though lol.

5)
TRY and open ZERO boxes this whole calendar year. I opened up 3 very averages cases this Boxing day, hopefully I've learned my lesson.
FAILED- I did a lot better this year, but did open up some product. Boxing day wasn't kind to me again unfortunately.

2023 GOALS!!!

1)
TRY and open ZERO boxes this whole calendar year. I'm confident that I'll finally achieve this, lol.

2)
Get down to 10 cards or less on my Andrea Bargnani non 1/1 rookie wantlist. (Currently sitting at 13)

3)
Rid my house of all my traders/non PC items. Whether it's selling, Halloween or sending more to COMC, want only collection cards in my home.

4)
Spend less this year. I spent probably the most I've ever spent in this hobby, in 2022...can't afford to do so in 2023. Not counting COMC, i'd like to make less than 100 separate purchases this year.

5)
Still have 4 Mikhail Grabovski (playing years) cards on my wantlist, I'd like to find at least 1 of those in 2023, JUST ONE, please.

6)
I have a semi-secret set that I'm going for, would like to reach 50% of it by the end of 2023.

7)
Add one new game worn jersey to my collection. Not sure I added any in 2022.

Have a great year everyone! Let's hope for a healthy 2023 for all!

This is what I said last year:

My current stats as of Dec 13/21 are listed next for Horton and Ovechkin
Nathan Horton Stats
All cards: 925/1194 77.5%
All cards excluding all 1/1: 878/1005 87.4%
Rookie: 37/37 100.0%
Autograph: 157/206 76.2%
Memorabilia: 374/480 77.9%
Serial: 583/795 73.3%

I was able to increase my percentage slightly again this year and was very lucky to have some new cards to chase from Leaf which was probably the highlight of the year for me. For Horton I will continue to add jersey numbered cards to the collection, low serial numbered doubles and try to purchase cards that are still on my wantlist.

Ovechkin Stats:
All cards: 2347/8000 29.3%
All cards excluding all 1/1: 2346/6434 36.5%
Rookie: 15/18 83.3%
Autograph: 56/1484 3.8%
Memorabilia: 689/3519 19.6%
Serial: 821/5531 14.8%

I was very patient this year in adding Ovechkin cards and was impressed that I increased by one percent in my ovechkin cards excluding 1/1's. I was very patient this year and almost exclusivly bought from COMC or auctions on ebay. I plan on doing the same in the new year. With Ovechkin prices continuing to increase , it has made it very easy to avoid low serial numbered cards and wait for items to surface on COMC.

I plan on continuing to add to my Matt Johnson collection when I'm able too and continue to post on instagram as the positive format is very refreshing.

___________________________________________________

Here are my current stats: Nathan Horton
All cards: 936/1182 79.2%
All cards excluding all 1/1: 885/993 89.1%
Rookie: 37/37 100.0%
Autograph: 158/206 76.7%
Memorabilia: 376/478 78.7%
Serial: 588/794 74.1%

Here are my current stats: Ovechkin
All cards: 2529/8416 30.0%
All cards excluding all 1/1: 2527/6771 37.3%
Rookie: 15/18 83.3%
Autograph: 55/1486 3.7%
Memorabilia: 702/3570 19.7%
Serial: 858/5752 14.9%

I was able to add a few new cards to the Horton and Matt Johnson collections. With Ovechkin I was very patient this year and was able to keep my percentages essentially where they were. I'm planning on moving a bunch of my ovechkin items this year so not sure what my percentage will look like at this same time next year. Going to continue to be patient when adding Ovechkin items. I enjoyed using IG but had a very busy end of the year with my boys so I wasn't posting as much as I would like. I would like to try and build my followers by posting more this year so we will see what happens. Good luck to everyone who had made goals.
