Your Hobby Related Goals/Resolutions For 2021

My 5 Hobby goals for 2020:

1) Get down to at least 16 cards left on my Andera Bargnani non 1/1 rookie wantlist (Currently sitting at 24)
FAILED - Knocked 3 off my wantlist, sitting at 21.

2) Get rid of everything that's non-PC, still have boxes of traders and bulk that I need to clear out. Hoping 2020 could be the year that I can finally put a huge dent in that!
1/2 FAILED - I got rid of a bunch of bulk, but still have a bit that I need to get rid of

3) Reach my goal of 50 sealed hobby boxes, and open them all up!!! Think that i'm currently at around 39.
SUCCESS! I opened them all up!

4) Find at least 1 of the 4 remaining Mikhail Grabovski cards that i'm missing.
FAILED - Couldn't find any of them. One popped up, but I missed the BIN

5) Purchase at least 2 new Leafs game worn jerseys
FAILED - Don't think I added any jerseys this year

Happy collecting to everyone in 2020!

1.5/5 ain't too bad haha

Didn't reach all my goals in 2020, but hoping that 2021 will bring me more success in the hobby. Here are my goals:

1) Get down to 15 cards on my Andrea Bargnani non 1/1 rookie wantlist (Currently sitting at 21)

2) Find at least 1 of the 4 remaining Mikhail Grabovski cards that i'm missing prior to 2020 releases. (Listed in signature)

3) Get rid of the rest of my bulk/traders.

4) Reduce my Raptors auto (pre 2019) wantlist to 10 or lower. Currently sitting at 16.

Let's start off by reviewing what I wrote last year:

For this year, I'm going to continue focusing on my Nathan Horton and Matt Johnson collection , trying hard not to overpay for Nathan Horton cards.

For Ovechkin, I'm going to try and continue to exercise patience and wait for the cards to surface on COMC, and only buy off ebay if it's under auction format. I also try to wait for the cards to be released for 6 months before I start chasing them.

Selling, in the last year I managed to essentially send everything worth anything off to COMC and have had decent success in turning cards I have no interest in to PC cards.

I still love visiting HI daily and really enjoyed participating in secret santa and continue to enjoy seeing everyone had to their collections and all the great cards that are out there. I will continue to post my monthly show and tells to show off my collection and allow me to keep track of what I've added.

I would like to get my ovechkin collection added to my database as well this year.

I hope everyone is successful in 2020 and can accomplish all of their goals.

Nathan Horton stats:
All cards: 900/1179 76.3%
All cards excluding all 1/1: 856/998 85.8%
Rookie: 38/39 97.4%
Autograph: 154/210 73.3%
Memorabilia: 354/473 74.8%
Serial: 563/786 71.6%

Ovechkin stats:
All cards: 2054/7213 28.5%
All cards excluding all 1/1: 2053/5824 35.3%
Rookie: 15/22 68.2%
Autograph: 56/1487 3.8%
Memorabilia: 650/3350 19.4%
Serial: 735/5069 14.5%

I had a pretty successful 2020, I did a fairly good job of not overpaying for items. I didn't add very many Matt Johnson cards this year, did add a bunch of Ovechkin but most of them came in one shipment from COMC. Only added a few cards from ebay for that collection. A few Nathan Horton cards surfaced that I needed, so I was more than happy to add them to my collection. I also ventured into the game used market which was a great decision.
For 2021, I plan on continuing to be patient when adding Ovechkin cards (with prices way up this has made it easier for me), continue to add to my Nathan Horton and Matt Johnson collections. Below you will find my updated stats, compared to one year ago for my Horton and Ovechkin collection.

Nathan Horton Stats:
All cards: 915/1187 = 77.1%
all cards excluding 1/1's: 869/1000 = 86.9%
rookie cards: 37/37 = 100%
autographs: 157/206 = 76.2%
memorabilia: 367/473 = 77.6%
serial: 576/789 = 73%

Ovechkin starts:
all cards: 2181/7665 = 28.5%
all cards excluding 1/1's: 2180/6157 = 35.4%
rookies: 15/18 = 83.3%
autographs: 56/1479 = 3.8%
memorabilia: 674/3424 = 19.7%
serial: 767/5324 = 14.4%

I would love to keep increasing my Nathan Horton percentages and it would be nice to keep my overall ovechkin percentage without 1/1's at about the same spot.

These numbers are impressive! Best of luck in 2021!

To hit a buckle card out of Vezina Collection and then not buy another box of cards lol.

Wishing you the very best of luck !!

To find a Practitioner (denomination not important) to remove the Curse of the Dallas Stars from my wax breaks.

Resolutions / SOLUTION
Sorry I am a bit late to the dance but there IS one day left in 2020.
WOW it has been quite the year AND it's time to reflect on it with some KEY (BOLD) words!

BREAKS (Boxes / Cases)
Up until 2 years ago, I would do (3 - 6 cases) breaks of UD1 / UD2 / OPC / SPA and with a great year, a case of The Cup.
Not any more, with allocation, the availability of those products, price increases and odds of a major pull, NO thank you!
I feel sorrow for the same town LCSs who has to cope with what he's given and no longer the benefactor of ALL my BASE cards.

BREAKS (of a different kind)
The hobby will always be there but it's not my only way to ENJOY life.
After every EXPO, I normally take 2 - 3 months breaks to concentrate on other matters, other hobby and life in general.

PC (Bobby Orr ONLY) & Projects
In the last 6 years of 12 years of being @ EXPO, I have transitioned from being strictly a collector to being dealer / collector.
I am still a collector but limited to one PC player (Bobby Orr). ALL others, have become part of my EXPO inventory with some exceptions.
I am quite selective with what of his I what to add AND I will break down occasionally to add a nice Howe, Beliveau and Richard.
As for projects, never thought it would happen but after seeing one of its cards at EXPO (Nov. 2019). Two thirds through and more at a later date.

TRANSITION
It has begun as stated above with a twist. Simply collect mid to high end stuff and let the one(s) I share a booth with take care of the low / common stuff (Timmies, CT, UD and OPC / OPC Platinum).

EBAY
That changes from day to day as I do my 20 -30 minute morning trip thru ebay AND my BIDDING / WATCH changes as bidding / desire with each day. Also quite selection as to what I am after!

EXPO
The future will tell and I am an optimistic person. Prediction - end of 2021, possibly OR wait until 2022.
My inventory is ready, only pricing to do AND upgrade every 6 months with a shoebox full of NEW cards.

MYSELF
Age and health are the key factors. Hopefully we will ALL gather again under ONE roof and share our #1 passion.

WOW, that's a lot and see you same time next year.
Stay SAFE and be SAFE

My goal for the short term is to acquire a mint Ovechkin Young Guns card. One of the few big cards on my list I wasn't able to lock down this year.

I set this as a goal for next year but got an opportunity to pounce on one so I took it. After some shipping delays it's at the post office waiting for me today. Just barely squeezing it in at the end of 2020 lol

Cruise control for 21’ now haha. Congrats!

lol. I've gotten almost all of the big targets I had out of the way in 2020 but the hunt never ends. Already putting together the next list for 2021. It will definitely be smoother sailing though from here on out.

Always fun to think about this. I feel like a lot has changed for my collection in the last year!

For this year, I think I'd give the following goals:

1) Reach 50 episodes for Center Ice Card Cast
2) Acquire at least one "big" card for my 2003-04 master collection project
3) Finish my 2019-20 UD Stature set
4) Acquire at least one 1/1 for my player PCs
5) Acquire at least one Niklas Hjalmarsson Premier Mega Patch (one more chest logo piece puts me at 3/4 done, one more shoulder logo piece puts me at 1/2 done)
6) Get my office to be functional for hobby use (serving as storage right now)

There may be other things that come to mind later, but this is what I thought of for now!

EDIT:
I’d also like to get my rolling 2003-04 master collection project thread going. Still a massive amount of work to do to get to that point though.

Nice thread.

2021 Goals:

1. sell off anything non-PC
2. buy cards I love versus "like"
3. make more time for the hobby
4. get my kids to understand opening wax, protecting and learning about hockey and the hobby
5. giving back to the hobby community

Simple. I like these 2021 goals!

In 2020 I made huge progress on my Flames PC's, so in 2021 my goal there is to be a bit more focused, instead of picking up whatever pops up. I'm making a list of specific Flames wants to focus on and will try to stick to that.

There are also a handful of Young Guns I need to finish off a few more sets, so will look to pick those up at reasonable prices.

But my main resolution will be to start attending card shows once they are back on. Between local FB groups, Instagram, podcasts (incl the Center Ice Cardcast) and Jeremy's Sports Cards Live, I feel much more connected to the collecting community now than in the past, but I look forward to meeting
people in person again and building those hobby relationships.

Best of luck with your Calgary Flames pickups in 2021, man!

May the Bread Man be with you... :flames:
